Invaluable content. Thanks so much! 2 weeks on YT, 14 videos in, 1 video a day. 105 Subs, 385 hours watched, average view duration 3:50 (14-18min long videos). I will apply some of these tips and come back and let you know how I did!

I've found that if I can get people past 30 seconds, I've got them for the whole video. So the opening hook, payoff, and credibility statements are insanely important. Sounds like I need to add a 2nd hook at the 30 second mark. Great vid Think!

Don't be discouraged if you don't hit the 50-60% , I hit between 35-45% all the time, and even though I am a small KZbinr , KZbin is pushing out my content more and more and as I get better , my new duration is starting to become more on average 40-55% It takes time cause you have to get better as you go along. Keep going everyone.

Thanks again for all you do, you (and folks like you) have really helped me educate myself as I learn this process! Have a great day!

Every time I see tips on the hook I just look back to my last video and how amazing I feel that hook was. 22 seconds, fast paced, super fun hook that I’m really proud of. Even if it’s not my most viewed video (yet) it’s definitely a sign that I’ve come a long way in my editing and that I’m striving for that 1% better with every video. :)

I just started studying this retention factor for my small channel at 292 subs. It has been the weakest part of my channel so far. After watching this video it became very clear why my last video has done a lot worse than on retention and why it has gotten less views. It was way to long at just over 30 minutes when all of my other videos had been between 10-20 minutes. There is absolutely no question that YT rewards and promotes videos that keep people watching for longer. I will also follow your editing advice and cut out the "and uhs" which I am bad about doing. Thanks for this valuable information and I have subbed to your channel.

Thanks Sean! Great video and new subscriber here. One thing I'm still not quite clear on. I have a fitness channel that I got serious about building only 3 months ago. I only have 230 subscribers, and I've done a little over 100 videos. I know that I still have so much to learn. Long question...My long challenge videos that record me doing like 1000 reps in 30 minutes or whatever, will get like 1,000+ views quickly, but out of 30 minutes of content, only about 2 minutes is viewed. That's about a 6% view duration. Makes sense, as no one will sit through 30 minutes of someone doing a repetitious fitness challenge on a video. My short tutorial videos on how to do an exercise, or short challenge videos are like 3 minutes long, but they will get at least 2+ minutes out of 3 minutes of audience retention, or almost 70% view retention, but only get about 100 views. Now, as to watch time (which KZbin cares about) the long video is hardly watched, but totals 1000 views x 2 minutes = 2000 minutes. However, most of the short video is watched and holds attention, but gets only 100 views x 2 minutes = 200 minutes. So would KZbin want me to make longer videos with low viewer retention that get a lot of views, or shorter videos that don't get near as many views, but holds the audience retention? Ultimately, it's viewer satisfaction and providing value to the audience that is important, but how does KZbin look at this issue? Thanks, Jack.

I have consistently low watch time and audience retention. My average view duration is12 to 33 seconds with the average length of my videos being around 11 minutes which is terrible audience retention and view duration. My channel has always just been a hobby so while I would like to increase the view duration and audience retention; it's not that big of a deal to me.

Thank you for your encouraging and supportive content because it definitely can get discouraging at times. We are a new channel about food, arcade, and travel. The hardest part of the analytics to see is the view time. 🤥😭 128 subscribers and growing every day and it's because we had some good luck with 1 video in particular that has helped boost the views and subs. The challenging thing now is to get people to watch all the way through and also, the other videos!

I feel effected by this heavy and I hope this advice works. I've been going down in watch time recently and I can't figure out why. I am a gaming channel so I would think a lot of engagement comes from the game I'm playing, and I do commentary with it. Is it just to long to watch? Am I not talking enough? Maybe showing to much? I have no idea because no one really says anything in the comments, but the analytics shows how bad they a truly doing as of recent. Any helpful advice would provide me with maybe a better understanding. I'm not expecting to blow up over night, but I would at least want to be entertaining enough for my audience.
