Q- I have put 5 coats of Matt varnish on my doll and I have been trying to put the eyes in, I am finding that although I’ve put that number of coats on the doll the paint is starting to crack why is this? Should I be putting more coats of varnish on?

Do you do the eyes the same way for a doll with a shoulder plate, such as Isabella by Regina S? The neck opening on them is really, really tiny.

Completely depends on what kit you are using, but 20mm is the most common eye size sold

I have the round glass eyes with a tail on it. Do I need to cut a piece out of the back of the eye so the tail part has a place to go instead of just making a slit in the vinyl?

I think those are more for antique dolls...is there any way to remove the tail safely? I've heard it's better to have flat back eyes :)

Most eyes can withstand very high temps so if you have the correct eyes then go ahead and put them in. This will save any rubs to paints if its hard getting them in later. But of course you can wait until the end if you wish.

If you are in China, surely you can buy a complete NPK doll as they sell on eBay if and when they send them but I bet they would at the moment. Not as I'd buy one as I avoid anything Chinese after seeing the dog meat festival today and the live skinned dogs. Why not rescue one and love it instead of a reborn. You could have saved a lot of money. You can use the other limbs for practising

If you use air dry paints...do you heat the head up with a warm heat buddy or something to make it easier...and also, do you do it after you've painted the head of the doll?

+theresa czuby if you are using Air dry paints or even heat set for that matter i suggest doing this at the start before you apply any paint. Then you can paint without the worry about messing the paint up while inserting eyes.

Have you ever put a heartbeat box inside a reborn? If you have one can you please show how to do it so it doesn't move all over inside the dolls body. Thanks for your nice tutorials!

I do occasionally put a heart inside a baby. You used to be able to buy bodies with heart pockets but these days if you do that you need to find someone who will make one for you. The only other way is to stuff around it securely so it says in the area you put it.

I'm really nervous about attempting this as I bought a sleeping baby, then her open eyed twin came up for sale and even though I dislike her eyes immensely, I knew they could be changed and I've no idea when I take her head off if I will be able to do it. Obviously I'll have to remove eyes and glue, her eyes are VERY dark and basically it's all you see of her. The colour(like a murky pond) and pupils are huge leaving very little white, ideally I'd like a pale baby blue and small to medium pupils and looking sidewards. Actually the more I sit here thinking of it I'm going to have to take her to someone as she has no lashes and I'd rather them be rooted as I have an ethnic boy needs eyelashes rooting too. Can I just ask though, why do some people use semi circular eyes like yourself and others yet I see fully rounded ones on eBay.

I can understand your nervous about doing it but its good to give it a try. If it doesn't work you can simply pay someone to do it for you when they do the lashes. As to eye shape, I'm not 100% sure. The half circle eyes are acrylic and probably the post popular due to price. the ones that are full round tend to be glass. I use both styles but i do prefer the shape of the half round as they sit in the eye socket extremely well.
