John from www.growingyour... shares with you how you can install an automatic watering drip irrigation system in your raised bed garden and how to plant your plant starts.
In this episode, John adds a water saving drip irrigation kit to a raised bed garden with automatic water timer that will water your garden without you. You will learn how you can easily install this drip irrigation system with no tools (except a scissors) even if you have had no prior experience..
John will share with you many tips in this epsiode which will be especially helpful for beginners that want to grow and organic raised bed garden.
John will first share with you how to install a drip irrigation system with automatic water timer. This is especially important if you are unable to be home to water your plants everyday.
John will also share with you his favorite brand of drip irrigation equipment and how you can save money on purchasing a kit instead of the parts seperately.
Next, John will go over all the edible plants that he will plant in this raised bed garden. You will discover why John choose herbs for this garden, and the differences between perennial and annual plants. You will also discover the plant spacing he is using. Finally, John will share with you how to install the drip emitters at each plant which puts water where it is needed: at the plants roots.
John will then show you how to plant the herbs and vegetable plant starts in the raised bed garden and what he adds to ensure a high level of success when growing your own food.
Next, John will go over how long you should set your water timer for in your garden and how many times a day you probably should be watering.
Finally, John will share his final thoughts on sourcing, building and installing this raised bed kit as well as talk about the investment that was made to grow your own food.
After watching this Do It Yourself Raised Bed Episode, you will have the knowlege and confidence you need to install an automatic drip irrigation system and plant out your plants.

I do irrigation as a profession. Some tips from some ppl interested. 1. RainBird (company name) is the best drip system you can get. The drip lines clean themselves from possible debris. And are super flexible. 2. Don’t use plastic stakes. They are trash. Get metal sod staples. Hold a lot better. 3. keep your drip system on longer than normal. Drip systems typically run .6 gph (gallons per hour) we typically let the run from 15/30 mins. 4. If you are going to use a grid in your garden always use 90° couplings and T’s.

I was feeling intimidated about installing a drip system, I have 1 giant raised bed I put in this year, it is 4 feet wide and about 15 feet long made of cinder blocks, and I have many 5 gallon and 10 gallon pots scattered everywhere. After watching you install this system it looks sooooo easy! I will be installing my irrigation system next month and feel confident I will have no trouble. Thank you for showing me how to do it, and thank you for the abundance of knowledge you bring to us in all your videos! God bless you John!

This might be a three year old video, but it's still relevant and I enjoyed it very much. Especially since I didn't have to do any of the work. 🤪 Seriously though, I really love videos about compost and everything about it. Would love to see you do an in depth video of compost making a-to-z. Ingredients, layering, etc.

Great step-by-step walkthroughs. A little drawn-out, but still high quality. The only real complaint I have is that I wish John would stress growing your own plants from seed. He tosses money around for plants, and doesn't mention that with a few weeks of planning and some not-so-expensive setups, a packet of seeds which is good for dozens - or hundreds - of plants can be purchased for less than the price of a single 4-inch potted plant. And they're good for years to come.

John, you forgot to mulch. Mulch helps suppress weeds. Helps the soil retain moisture by keeping down evaporation and it feeds the soil as it breaks down.

Great video John. I recommend running a garden hose from your spigot to your first raised bed, and then connect the drip irrigation system. UPDATE: My apologies, after viewing the entire video I now realize that to did this job for a customer on was very tight on budget. Purchasing a hose would have put you over budget.

I've been growing all winter and I live in Illinois and I love it! I now been swinging my garden outside in containers. I am glad you made a detailed video because most people who make these kind of videos always seem to leave out the very important process of the actual planting. We always end up seeing the end results, rather than the process of germination and then planting. Some seeds I don't whether to sow direct or submerge in water and do the napkin thing (I've had the most success with the napkin) but not all seeds are alike. For example it was easy to do it with okra but I'm a little nervous about the tomato seeds because they are sooooooo tiny. Don't know if it's better to directly sow them into the soil and skip the germination process. I really wish I could see more videos about the actual germ-to-plant process. btw I live in Illinois Zone 6a

Thank you, John! I want to set up a small system, and use a limited supply of collected rain water (not fluoridated/chlorinated city water), for irrigating/wetting a number of "permeable/breathable potting bags" primarily for propagating woody cuttings, from many species of (locally Native) shrubs. I am not irrigating a large, disperse area.

I like the Nursery idea better where they have a hose with drip tubes that punch in to the main water line then run a mini tube with a spike right down into the dirt to the roots and water it deep in the dirt. Much better idea and saves water. Check with your local nursery and get serious about gardens.

We NEED you John! I like working with the 1/4" tubing and prefer the shut off valves instead of the drippers since I can regulate more precisely how much water I put on my plants. It's cheaper, easier to work with and comes with all kinds of cool fittings, aka plugs, tees, and straight in line joiners. I have had problems with the water drippers in my yard around my trees getting overtaken by moss... chokes it right out!
