If you're gluing it down anyway, is there any reason one shouldn't just shoot a few short nails up through the bottoms of the rails, versus using screws?

Screws are better they will draw the molding down tight to the bar top.

You could always use a countersink drill bit and some wood filler to hide the screws too.
