How to Install a Boost Gauge, Blow Off Valve (BOV) & IAT Sensor | Supercharging the MX5 / Miata Ep25

My engine kicked the bucket recently so I've been planning on sending it to the machine shop and then starting my supercharger build. I just watched this whole series today while at work, and then got confused why I couldn't find the next video... I realize now that I'm caught up! I can't wait for the next video! @@FastRust Possibly so, but if I have it machined then I'll have more confidence in it... My friend paid $600 when he had his machine work done, so hopefully he can hook me up

Yeah it's a good point. I did the same with the short block on the Capri, so I knew it was in good shape before modifying. Interestingly I paid £600 years ago! What issue have you got with the engine?

oh I never answered your question my first issue was that I lost compression on one cylinder, then my next issue was that I took my engine apart into a million pieces

​@@FastRust ​The idle air control valve breather hose. It's the hose which comes from the right of the engine near the oil cap which goes to the middle of the stock air intake.

I don't think that's anything to do with the IAC system, it's just a breather hose from the rocker cover. I've bunged a filter on it for now. Will be covered in next vid.

How come this set up needs a BOV but the R53 Mini Cooper S's don't have one? The lore on the forums for those is that the supercharger stops producing boost as soon as you're off throttle because the revs die, but I suppose the BOV allows any residual pressure generated by the fact that the engine RPM dies more slowly than the the TB closes? Be interesting to hear your 2 cents.

Yeah you've pretty much got it. With a setup like this with a relatively large volume of air between the supercharger and the throttle body, when the throttle snaps shut that compressed air has to go somewhere. Yes, it will vent through the bypass but without a blow off valve some of that is going to back up into the charger forcing the rotors to slow down. This will either cause some pretty severe engine braking. Or the belt will slip.

There's an audible release of pressure from my BOV when I let off the throttle so it's definitely helping to relieve that intake pressure

@@FastRust thanks for the reply, all makes sense, just had a thought that on an R53 the TB is before the charger which would stop pressure surging too, I guess it's a simpler to add a BOV instead of moving the TB, especially as you still need something TB shaped to connect to the manifold

What is the thread pattern on the IAT sensor and where did you get the plug for it?

That particular IAT sensor is an M14, the plug I got off a mate but you can get them off ebay
