We used 2.5in finish nails on ours. Shooting at an angle will lose some length as well but that's more than enough to hold them with the adhesive too

A 45 degree angle into where the tongue meets the thick part of the board. Just 1 nail in each truss or rafter.

I would like to do something like this for a small bedroom in my mobile home. It has popcorn ceiling and I certainly don't want to scrape the ceiling to remove it. Just had the window replaced so I now have to look at ceiling, walls and then a new carpet.

Did you add an extension ring to the box for the light fixture, to compensate for the added wood thickness?
@BakersDIYLifestyle
@BakersDIYLifestyle Жыл бұрын
With the pendant they chose we adjusted the height with a big center rod and just moved the light cover itself down. With a ceiling fan you'll definitely need an extension or new box. Just be sure it's rated for a fan if you do that!

Thanks for the detailed instructional video. I am interested in doing this to a large living room area 20’x35’ unfortunately my trusses run the narrow way, and that’s how I would like the finished boards to run as well. Should I first install 1”x2 “ firing strips the long way and then attach the tongue and groove to those? Or is there an easier method to do this?
@BakersDIYLifestyle
@BakersDIYLifestyle Жыл бұрын
That's the only way to do it! I would just place your strips 16 on center and put a little adhesive on them since they will be against the popcorn. You might have a little trouble with the unevenness of the strips on top of the popcorn, but hopefully it won't stop you! Good luck!
@BakersDIYLifestyle

If you feel brave you might be able to use construction adhesive on the planks, straight to the popcorn and just fire some nails into the drywall for moral support but that's definitely on you if you want to save a step! I would probably try that on my own house but not a customers haha

I would run some 2x4s using concrete tapcons screws, then those will simulate your ceiling studs. Then nail your planks to them. Also using some adhesive, the bad part of it is that you are going to loose like 2” of hight on your room.

Hi, great looking ceiling! Would appreciate a bit of advice. We’ve bought an old house with old polystyrene ceiling tiles in every room and they’re a fire hazard. Tried taking them off but it’s a nightmare, tried a glue gun etc and still brutal. Could we cover over the tiles with this kind of planking? How would we make it fire safe? Can’t see the joists either so could we use adhesive? Any advice welcome - we can’t afford to get the pros like yourselves in! Cheers for any help :)
@BakersDIYLifestyle
@BakersDIYLifestyle 6 ай бұрын
Hey I know the feeling! We bought a 1927 farm house and are going through the ringer to update it. As far as the fire protection I would think the addition of planks would act as a small barrier before anything would get to the tiles. You could probably find some sort of fire rated plank as well. Try a magnet across the ceiling to find the nail holes for studs. Worst case is you just use glue, which I would recommend anyway, and fire your nails close and on an angle. Imagine making an x with the cross point in the ceiling. Hope that helps and good luck!

I used a 16g Brad nail and you nail right into the tongue at about a 45 degree angle. That way the nail will shoot through the meat of the board and not break the tongue. If you shoot straight into the tongue the nail will stop the next board from fitting into the groove. Hope that helps!

Do you suggest I put up 1x4 boards to nail the planks too since it's a 1950's plaster ceiling or do you think the plaster alone is sturdy enough to handle the planks? Thanks
@BakersDIYLifestyle
@BakersDIYLifestyle Жыл бұрын
If you find the 2nd floor joists or roof rafters, that is what you'll shoot the nail into. The plaster isn't what holds the nail. That being said your construction adhesive will be able to carry a lot of the load as well.

Thank you for sharing this video and the great advice. I was searching KZbin and came across your channel and I am not subscribed. Question, I have an old house built back in the 1890's and I would like to try putting wood planks on the ceiling in one of the bedrooms. I think we will go with pine, tongue and grove. My concern and question for you is how would you go about attaching them to the ceiling. Currently the ceiling is the original hoarse hair plaster and laths. There are a few small cracks and it is a bit wavy in areas in the plaster but everything feels solidly attached. Any advice would be greatly appreciated or if you are aware of an online resource that could help. Thank you again for your content. Jay

Thanks for checking out the channel! You shouldn't have to change anything about the install. Just use some 2.5in or close size brad nails into the joists/rafters with the construction adhesive. If you wanted more peace of mind you could face nail everything for extra support but I don't think it would be necessary. Hope that helps!

I was wondering if you had any tips on another problem I am trying to resolve as easy as possible, skill level being new at these home projects. The home contains the all the original wood trim with its original stain and (i think) varnished top coat. Over the hundred plus years, especially where there is a large amount of sunlight the top varnish finish has what I would best describe as an "alligator" skin like appearance. I was wondering if you were aware of anything I can use on it to take off this rough layer so I then can clean, fill any small holes, scratches and then put a protective coat of urethane on it. I greatly appreciate any advice or tip. Thank you in advance.. Jason

With the video so sped up, I can't tell where you're actually shooting the nails. Are you shooting through the surface or somehow through the tongue and groove part so they don't show? Also, what about the nail length? Thickness of the planks plus thickness of the sheetrock, plus? How much? For example, if the planks are 1/4 inch, and the sheetrock is 1/2 inch (plus a little for the popcorn), then how long do the nails need to be?
@BakersDIYLifestyle
@BakersDIYLifestyle Жыл бұрын
We used 2 and 3/8 inch nails shot through the tongue at an angle back to the rest of the board. With the construction adhesive on the main part you could probably get away with a smaller nail if you have some too. You just have to make sure you shoot at an angle so the nail doesn't sit where the groove of the next piece will need to go. Hope this helps!

@@BakersDIYLifestyle basically we have 2 sets of shingles one on top of the other cause the past owners didn’t want to pay to have it removed. So I know that adds some extra weight to the roof. I was just wondering if that would further be affected by the weight of these boards on the ceiling or if there is no direct link. Sorry I am super new to DIY stuff but don’t want a $200 project turn into $20000 lol
