Being a bit of an old schooler, I thought I might have a pro go thru the process before installing my new oring chain. I struggled a bit on the last oring chain a few years back. Watched the video and got a chain press and did it precisely as Slavens described. I did not give a "like" after watching since I felt mr. Slavens was treating the viewers like we were stupid when he stated "...make sure you remove the tool when your done..." So, like a complete idiot I give my wheel a good spin to admire my handy work upon completion and...Crunch!! The tool hammers into my freshly fabricated custom fabricated chain defense mechanism. I narrowly avoided a disaster. So I'm back to give a "like". The world is full of stupid people...

Thank you! So many nice tips here. That's the difference between experience and reading instructions. I tried this for the first time today, using the same tools, and I noticed the pins were pushing out a bit on the inside of the chain, for the very reasons you explain here. Fortunately I stopped and came to search. Reversing the plate is exactly what I need to do. "You don't pry anything unless you have to." How many problems could be avoided if that adage was adhered to.

After I chased the clip around the garage 10 times, pinched my fingers, lost an o-ring and bent the plate, this worked well for me .

Pro tip wrap a rag over the clip for removal so it only flys into the rag 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I've never done this before. Spent about 30 minutes trying to coax that clip on with a flat head screwdriver. The pliers on the pin worked the first time. I feel like an idiot.

I have one like this also, more work getting it on and off, I’ll probably change to the loose kind.

Very helpful, thank you! I stumbled upon this trying to figure out if there was a trick to getting the master link back on or if I'm just WAY weaker than the general public...tool ordered :)

Do your self a favor and get the motion pro master link press. Best thing ever for master links. Pres off, press on. No juggling a bunch of plates and screws.

does it matter in wat direction you put the clip
@StirlingMArcher

Yep. As per Jeff's video. if you have it going the other way, there is the chance that it could come off during riding if it catches. Less of a chance with this the closed end leading towards the chain direction.

You can just use some pliers to sit the plate in place or you can get a mate with a piece of wood to hold it on the other side and hit it with a small socket that fits over the pins
