One suggestion is turn the boot like a diamond. Allows less surface area for water to pool and top two sides act as channels to move the water along

Now that it has been up for a while, I noticed that single wall pipes were lapped backwards from what I have in my house. When I installed the chimney, I had them stacked the way you did where the lower pipe went into the upper one. Then an oldtimer gave me some advice and told me the creosote will run down the pipe over the years and leak out those joints. It was better to run the pipe with the upper pipes connecting into the lower ones. Is that what you are seeing? I don't have any smoke leaking out of my pipes and never had any creosote leaks either. Anyways, great to-the-point video! I am replacing my flashing with a boot this year and this is the GO TO VIDEO! Thank you.
@KevinMaxwell-o3t17 күн бұрын
Yes, I saw that. I've always had the upper pipe slide into the one below, because creosote and condensation WILL run out of an upside down joint.

Now that it has been in place for a year has it started leaking yet or corroding on the high side where the water pools, or where you cut the steel with a grinder?

Do you have to support the double wall chimney pipe with something up there, or is it all just gravity?
@johnkelly61293 жыл бұрын
Great video but isn’t the chimney pipe supposed to be a bit higher than that?
@HowToLou3 жыл бұрын
Technically yes, but my wife did not want to see the chimney above the roofline. I put the top of the chimney even with the peak of the roof with the idea that I could quickly add another 2 foot section of double wall stainless chimney on top, if I needed it for draft. I have not had any issues, with winds from all directions, so there is no need, in my case. Part of what helps my draft is that my chimney is a 15 foot vertical run with no elbows to slow the smoke.

I was told once say the cap should be about 2ft above the roof surface not sure I saw high and low cap was installed in youtube
@HowToLou3 жыл бұрын
Yes, best practice is to have the top of the chimney at least 24 inches above the ridge, to prevent downdraft when wind comes from the other side and over the ridge. This is less of an issue with my low pitch roof and I have good exhaust momentum since I have no bends in the chimney
@Greenkabin3 жыл бұрын
@@HowToLou I bought a set not install yet, but the cap is going to be connect right on top of double wall and the double wall is 14 inches high so I would say the cap will be about 1¹/² ft from the roof. My cabin was built with steel panel and only 2.5 inches thick
@HowToLou3 жыл бұрын
That all sounds good. If you have any draw problems, you can always add another section of double wall later.

Do you not have to have a damper flap in the piping?
@baagii0830 Жыл бұрын
Hello, what is the highest temperature it can resist? Would it be too much for a single layer chimney pipe?
@HowToLou Жыл бұрын
I think silicone is good to 600 degrees. Single pipe is fine until you have a chimney fire and the single wall pipe glows cherry red and gets way over 600 degrees. Single wall is not to code, because it can be very dangerous. I have had chimney fires. They are scary.

Good video. Do you squeeze silicone around the top of the red flashing where it meets the stove pipe ?
@Ranger_4810 ай бұрын
You shouldn't need to, being rubber-like, it should seal itself because of the tight fit.

No wood under the metal under the boot. Stay as FAR from wood as you can.

@HowToLou3 жыл бұрын
You want single wall inside, so it radiates more heat, but insulated double wall through through roof so it does not burn off your roof paint or catch your trusses on fire.

Search Amazon for high temp silicone chimney boot. You need an orange one, not black. I bought my pipes at a local hardware store. Just search for 6 inch, stainless steel, insulated, double wall chimney pipes. They are fairly expensive. I think I paid around $50 each.
