In this video we look at how to install a Cisco Meraki MR44 wireless access point in an office suspended ceiling (with ceiling tiles). This model features a versatile bracket that can also be used in many different types of installs. Process shown in this video may be applicable to other similar models including the MR36, MR46, MR46E, MR56, etc.
If you have any questions or suggestions feel free to ask them in the comments.

Hello Mike, thank you for this video very educative. As you said, the installation manual shipped with the AP is more or less useless as s**t. I would want a video of how this could be mounted to a wall. This would really help me out. Thank you.

Hi! Thanks for the comment. You're right, they should really prove better installation instructions. In the box are four drywall anchors and some different sizes of screws. That's probably what I'd use to install on a drywall wall. Although to be honest, I'd probably get some higher quality drywall anchors from the hardware store, if I needed to do that kind of installation. Good luck, let me know how it goes and what you wind up using!

Great video! I appreciate the cleanup at the end. Too many people just leave a messy, unfinished install. Thanks!

Thanks! And you're welcome! I do always try to leave my installs looking good. Point of pride or just OCD, I guess. But always try to leave things better for the next person who comes along. 😊

We bought a bunch of MR36 units. We have found that once installed in a grid like in the video, we can see the metal bracket. Not a huge deal, but compared to the install brackets for the Cisco Aironets we are replacing, the MR36 looks more clunky.

Thanks for the comment! I'm not familiar with their entire product line but I remember the square ones before this. They did seem a bit more solid when installed. Guess time will tell how well these new ones hold up. 🤷

Can you do a removal from the ceiling also or do you just need to unscrew the screw in the AP
@CompTechMike
@CompTechMike Жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks for checking out my video. Yes, removal is basically the reverse of installation. Remove the screw on the side and the unit should come out easily (in my experience, not having the screw the unit would just fall down, anyway). Then remove the bracket, remove the cable, put the tiles back in place, done. Easy. 😊

Any chance you'll do a video on how to set the AP up for your company's LAN, get it connected to however it's managed (assume it's Cisco cloud managed somehow??)? I need new AP's and was considering these Meraki's but unsure how to cfg them once I pull out the 5 year old Ubiquiti's
@CompTechMike

Hi! Thanks for the comment, and the suggestion. I'm just the installer on these. Config is handled by someone else (off-site). Should that change I'd definitely consider recording a video on the process. 🙂

Mike, If I need to take down the meraki, do I need to unscrew anything or?

Hi! Thanks for the comment. If you've watched the video, removal is basically the reverse of installation. Should be able to do it with nothing more than basic hand tools and a ladder. 😊

Too late, so at least for the record: around 5:22 you can see the bracket already on the ceiling. The bracket has two clips that click into the plastic case of the MR44, in the middle of the longer "edges" of the metal rectangle that is the mounting bracket. So looking at a still picture of the video around 5:22, the clip on the right is fixed, while the clip on the left can be pushed inward - it forms a "leaf spring" of sorts. So you first unscrew the bolt (if you have it in) and then if you can, e.g. squeeze your little finger into the crack between the plastic MR44 case and the ceiling just above the screw hole, and try to "ram your little finger" into the crack. If you manage to push that "leaf spring clip" inward, the clip will let go of the plastic MR44 case. Actually, once that bolt is out, you can probably just push the whole plastic case "right to left" - the spring-loaded clip will stay engaged while the spring complies, and the fixed clip on the right will let go. Then just gently tilt the box down a little, release your sideways push and disengage the left clip as well. I'm holding a specimen of the MR44 original package in my hands, trying to figure out how it fits together :-)

@@xrysf03 good tips, thanks! In my experience the "leaf spring" puts barely any tension on the unit at all. Once the screw is removed it will practically fall right off the ceiling (or with a gentle tug). Maybe you got a slightly redesigned model with improvements to holding power? Or maybe mine were just defective, lol. 😆

hi mike, can i unclaim a used meraki
@CompTechMike
@CompTechMike Жыл бұрын
Hi Ali! Thanks for checking out my video! If I understand correctly, you would like to completely remove a device from your account (for example, if you're selling it), correct? I would recommend trying these instructions: ethosdynamics.com/unclaiming-a/ This reddit thread has some additional information: www.reddit.com/r/meraki/comments/626zen/how_to_get_a_device_unclaimed/ If that doesn't work you can use this page to contact Cisco Meraki support via their ticking system or phone call: documentation.meraki.com/General_Administration/Support/Contacting_Support Hope this helps!

Every person that ever has to move or demob these hates when people put the screw in. I've never seen one fall from the mount. Unless you have some intense vibrations in the area, don't put the screw in it.

Hi Marc! Thanks for checking out our video. Sorry you disagree with the procedure shown. In my experience, if the screw isn't in the units can easily fall from the ceiling. I would recommend it, but you do you, I guess. 😆
