You can also wire the device the other way around - line to brass screw, neutral to silver screw, and leave the jumper in place. Doing this will cause the switch to control the receptacle, which has potentially interesting use cases.

Thanks for posting this. I was working with a replacement combo switch and outlet where none of the screw heads were obviously colored for easy ID. The combo that I removed was from the 70's, and had a totally different layout than my modern unit.

When I was doing my apprenticeship the way I remember it would be B to B black to brass.the load wire. But at times the white wire can also be the load wire what you call continuity and that sometimes where things used to get tricky . But then you just reverse it white to b and your black becomes a neutral

Hey sparky thanks for the video, I installed the exact same switch. I attached the hot wire to only one black screw however when I turn on or off the switch it also turns the outlet on or off. Do I need to remove the tab and split the hot wire?

thanks in the first two minutes I finally understood why it wasn't working for me. i was using a switch connection to give power to the receptacle lol. so that's why sometimes the black/whites are inversed, when they are a secondary line that comes from the light.

Hello good night, just making sure I got this correct wire up outlet to control a light and once tabs aren’t broken, the outlet to the bottom will not be disturbed with the toggling of the light switch , once tab is broken then the socket will be turned on /off with the switch…. This is excellent, in another video they said that on the two live screws, if you attach the live wire to the switch it will control the power going to the plug effectively shutting it off, but if you attach the live wire to the plug screw both plug and light switch have power, is this true?

Great video but my existing old installation has different wiring - two black wires both seem to be hot on one side with an unused ground terminal in the middle and two white wires on the other side, the bare wires are twisted together. Switch controls exterior light, outlet is always powered. How do I replace with a new liviton like the one you show? Appreciate any help. I will be happy to send you pictures if needed. Hi, you could have used the deep Sigma box, regular is $4.68 deep one is $11.×× in Lowes or Az , but would by easier than using the extension, i think i will get the deep one for my project (the switch is for an outdoor flood light, and adding a gfci outside in the box outside where the cable from the inside switch to the light outdoor will be crossing on its way, so , i think the outside junction box/gfci outlet will get crowded, not much space for wires.... so even though i already have all the bushing etc prepared... I think I will just get the bigger-deeper box and avoid 3 hours of accommodating cables ... and those gfci are really boxy and big and deep they barely fit in outlet boxes nowadays!!😅😅

Reason I asked is because I have traced a ceiling wire to a switch on the wall ...there is voltage on one of the two ceiling wires and one leg at the switch when switch is open and voltage on both ceiling wires with the switch closed but when I connected a ceiling fan (blue and black from fan to hot wire and white to the other ceiling wire) nothing happens. I also tried connecting a light across the ceiling wires and nothing....

How to wire a 3 way combo switch w/outlet having 1 red/2blacks & 2 whites capped behind? How wire a regular combo (non 3 way) with 3 whites/2blacks. Can figure 2nd one but getting ticked at the 3 way
