Installing the door frame that I made from the parts in the previous video. After the frame is set, I usually like to hang the door to check the fit and tweak as needed, but since I'll be making the doors for these openings, I'll need to get that done before I can go any further.

The first half of the kzbin.infoUgkx3ICSK6nSknaL_45CU2NmFSoXjarGMDiJ book is everything about wood: types, tools, finishes, setting up shop etc. The second half is all about doing projects for inside and outside of the home. The color pictures are helpful. After reading a dozen of these types of books, this is probably the best overall (layout, color photos, plans). Only detraction is that many of the projects use a table saw/router/planer, which are usually expensive and take up space, so the plans are less friendly to newcomers and the budget conscious. But I know I can use a drill, circular saw or a jigsaw to make the projects.

Great Job John! You mentioned many subtle points that I had long forgotten (at least 20 years since I last framed a door), and made them simple to both understand and remember. Odds are I will be doing some serious door work next spring and this set of videos will be a major help on many of the fine points.

Great job, John. Here in the UK (& Ireland, where my family are from) many original & modern builds - walls, door frames/jams are not square, primarily because the contractors are under time constraints, so the end result is less than satisfactory. Nice application, as usual, plus the bonus feature - your BOC T-shirt - I'm a big fan, myself. Can't wait for the next video - take it easy there :D

John to the rescue..! Just yesterday I removed a door and frame from a room I am decorating in my home with no idea how to put a new one in. I figured I would hit KZbin and Google when the time came. Today I log on and you have posted a video full of tips and excellent information, I am sure that I will watch it many times before I actually refit the frame. I am looking forward to the rest of the videos in this mini series. Thanks John. (Cool t-shirt by the way!).

Thank you for this. I have an old front door that I saved from being thrown away. I want a custom frame and trim for it. More importantly I want to do it myself. My house was built in the 1940's and I want to keep everything in that timeframe. Craftsman style is my favorite with all the wood working and beautiful stains.

I know that, at the end of the day, this is your house and you're going to do what needs to be done for it, but if it doesn't matter, and if my opinion helps at all, it would be very good to see how you make the doors out of plywood. I am in a similar situation as you (building an addition on to my existing house) and I'm wanting to build my own doors as well. Love your videos! Keep it up.

Another helpful video John. Thank you! For an existing door that's out of square due to settling, would you recommend removing it and starting from the rough opening and resetting the existing frame? I have several existing doors that don't close right due to settling. In most cases it's not off by a shaving or two, but a quarter inch or so.

I'm new to your channel and I like your videos, even though I'm barely a DIYer. I have a question... I can't really judge the distance between the doors so I'm wondering if the closet door will be at such an angle that the doorknob won't hit that beautiful glass front door? You know sometimes doors get opened too far. I'll be glad to see how it all works out. Thank you for the vids.

quick tip. Stand off to one side close one eye and line up the outside of the jamb with the reveal on the opposite side, if they line up its a quick way to tell if your door will close properly.

So you are using the edge of the frame and reveal as winding sticks. Can you get your eye close enough to the wall for that to work? I wonder if using crossed strings would work as well... - Eddy

The easy sure fire way to level and square the door is to install like a prehung. Build it with door and trim. level on the hinges and nail into the studs.then adjust the top reveal. Nail it.then adjust the striker reveal. Easy.

Couldnt you have used the awl on one end of the jig and the drill bit on the other as locator pins . Drill down one long side then the other..no measurements needed?

Do you have to use a nail gun to install a door frame or would a drill and screw gun be sufficient?
@anthonyromano8565
@anthonyromano8565 6 жыл бұрын
It's easier if you hinge the door and jamb before you install the jamb. Just make the door 3/16 smaller than the jamb opening, after beveling the door edge. I would be hard-pressed to give up the adjustability of an adjustable stop that can match the shape of the door rather than hope the door is going to sit flat on the jamb of a fixed stop.

Hey John, might be a silly question, but "if the rough opening was too narrow how would you correct that?" Don't suppose it would matter that much to chisel off a bit.
@joshymcdaniel9233
@joshymcdaniel9233 Жыл бұрын
That one I can help 😂 That’s going to cause you a headache’ Imo just recut / remake just the top piece going right to left as that’s the one that determines your opening size’ Say you R/O is 1/4” to narrow you could shave 1/8” off each side of door but then you’ll have to recut hinge slots on door For me it would be far easier to remake that one too piece to correct size
