How to install a DOS game from a CD on DOSBox

I do exactly what it says on the video but once I reach the "dir" part it only says "Directory of E:\. File *.* Not Found." What does "dir" stand for?

@josephbritt was it the DOS Name? as in SEA in undersea Adventure and make sure your doing it in the C Dirrectory not the Z one

i have never heard that error before.........................It sounds like a Sega CD error. Does the disc have alot of scratchs on it?

when i enter setup it says my program must be run under microsoft windows :( please help :( i'm trying to install where in the usa is carmen sandiego. (the one from 2000, not 1992) it'll actually install fine in a regular setup, but it won't let me finish without attempting to install quicktime and then that's when it says the installation has stopped working and it closes it :(

did u mount any of the Drives and did you type the letter of the like D:/run and then install? if your just typeing Install at the Z prompt thats not going to get you anywhere. If your still having problems please let me know

No your not bugging me i am glad you asked me for help. A) have you mounted both your CD/DVD-ROM and folder you plan to be you virtual Drive B) Did you type D:/run where as D is represents the letter of your drive and then install? that could be your problem if you still do have one reply to this comment or message me

hello my laptop is using vista home prof and I'm trying to play electronic popple from CD in DOSBox 0.72 and it went OK until I typed in 'install' the CD reacted and all that but the screen just went blank, not the screen that u have on and by blank I mean it went total black also I can't see my mouse arrow until I get out of that screen using alt+tap. What can I do? PLZ TELL ME ;(

@solidwingtsunkid did u mount a foilder i the C drive? or are you running it in the Z Drive? Run it from the Drive C u mounted

it might be setup instead of install or the problem might be your CD-ROM might be layered with something. What windows are you using?

Tryin to run Kings Quest 7. Did everything up until i tried to find the directory of the cd rom in my E: drive. DosBox said "Directory of E:\. File *.* not found. Not sure what ta do now. :(

Well, I've comed to the E:/dir part, and I've found the setup.exe, but when I type in E:\setup, iit says: "This program cannot be run in DOS mode". What do I do then? PS: I have Vista too, if that's maybe a part of the problem.

hello my games starts and runs fine, but when it asks me to insert cd 2 I dunno what to do. i have the 2nd disc but the autorun "cannot be run in dos mode" cause it's not a dos file. help please.

@alejobradley it should i read on the wikipedia DOSbox(Yes they have one) That the newest release is 7 compadable if not then u probably wil have to use compadiblity mode on 7

thx for the video but i have 13 gb in my drive but for the lands of lore guardians of destiny, i got to the installing part which is the video part but the install says that i have only 108mb n its not enough to install the game i was like i obviously has more than that...so my question is wots wrong with is??

hmm are you sure you mounted it as a CD-ROM Drive and not a Hard Disk. Sometimes DOSBox can be stupid on certain computers and your CD-ROM might be coded with some werid thing and you have to type in an Extra Command at the prompt. Either way let me know how it works out

if you are installing them threw a CD rom type DIR you might have to type in Setup but what Windows are you using your CD ROM might be coded/layered with something i can try to help you if you tell me your Windows

@Rocky54167 either way it should work in either. if its a win95 you should be able to right click the game file in vista or xp and run in compatability mode for win95.

Dir stands for directory i put it there only because some people forget what to type in for the command to install a game. Just forgert it its not that important. Just Type install or setup after you type E:/run

alright is ur CD in the drive and is it mounted. if u are trying to install the MS-DOS games from KA that i have up once u mount C and your CD ROM drive type E:/run and it will say E: and w/e else is there just type install Now if your CD rom is coded or something like that you may want to type intro on DOSBox and try useing one of those comands but regualry to mount e it u should type out Mount E E:/ -t cdrom

u don't remember? about when you were in 3rd grade and i was in 6th grade near the end of the school year(2004) and we both still took karate u wanted to play this game on my old Packard Bell Windows 98 1st edition. But the CD ROM drive was dieing out and we put it in and it didn't read and it got stuck.

@ikeano29 are you serious? i remember that the game being a WIndows based game unless it was remade. Regardless of such if it is a DOS based game it SHOULD run in DOSBox. Note there is one game i remember reading that was DOS and had a hard time running on DOS Mabye thats it

one of the most common problem other than mounting a CD/DVD-rom drive. You have to make a foildr in the C Drive called whatever you it to be named then mount in DOSBox and install the game to that foilder and you should be able to go

Service Park 1 or 2? and did u upgrade from an older windows? cause thats the windows i have right now hmm. Mabye your CD-ROM might be layered i'll give you the commands you might need to type in i'll give them to you in a while

@ikeano29 A) I know that DOS was taken out of WIndows wiht the NT brand but the consumer brand with Windows 9x(95,98,ME and ME is border line of almost out of) Had does in fact 95 was notorious for dos compadiblity because it the best DOS Compadblity. However this is running on DOSBox, but supposedly there is a way to run DOS on XP without DOSBox. If the game the guy is talking about is Windows 95 then XP believe it or not is not the best for compadiblity.

This is awesome sauce. My main problem now with the knowledge adventure games is that they run slow. To think they could run on my Packard Bell with 4 MB ram but my computer with 1 GB is lagging to hell. How do I fix this issue?

@Mario6667777 well idk how to say it other than Not all old games will run in Windows XP. VPC believe it or not is a great solution if you have good ram!, just install the OS correctly

you have to type Mount E E:/ -t cdrom if you don't it could be trying to find a drive in your harddrive named E thats not your DVD/CD rom

@cicixara Like i said if it is from 2000 it is the Windows version try installing it on Windows, if it says illegal command win, then it is the Windows Version.

Now i said i would gett your the CD commands now try this Mount E E:/ -t cdrom usecd (i think thats it) but now if it does say illegal command install there are on DOS discs sometimes two install exes one may be install and the other mabye something like wininst or setup if u are having a hard time then try install Windows 3.1 threw DOSBox and it may make it easer. But if the Mount E E:/ -t cdrom usecd doesnt work then message me

Kylgrv i think i have solved your problem! Are you sure E is the name of your CD-ROM Drive. If not when you type your letter of your CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive and run then type DIR to make sure its not Install or Setup! if you are still haveing problems please let me know!

What I did was what you do on this video. I created a new folder on my C drive, called DOS, I opened DosBox and mounted the C drive, then I did the E E:/ -t cdrom with my game inside and it said the E drive does not exist. I tried it again and the same thing happened.
