How To Install A Fan Belt On A Trabant P601 Step By Step

My fan belt broke on the A1 causing the engine to overheat, so my boss dragged my Trabant the rest of the way to work with a Transit Connect. parts were ordered, heads were scratched, and eventually I worked out how to fit a new fan belt

Had to replace my fan belt today. It snapped right next to a Casey's gas station so we rolled right in. When it snapped boy did it make a bang! It knocked the fuel line right off the carb too, big puddle in the parking lot and all over the alternator. I fixed it in about 1 hour with my tiny tool box from Trabantwelt and a friendly man who just so happened to have a 17mm wrench I left at home. Luckily I didn't have to remove the fan or that crossbar thing you've got there, but I did have to fully loosen all 3 bolts for the alternator but that's just normal even for tightening. The belt barely squeezed past the cylinder heat fins, rolled it onto the pulley and done.

My Trabant also has a stud that holds the fan in place. On my '87 Traby (with it's original 1987 engine) there is no 14mm bolt that gets in the way of mounting the fan belt. However, I have an older spare engine (from 1970) that has the 14mm bolt on the timing plate, but it has been removed.
