About 10 years or so ago the International Studebaker Meet was held in Charlotte, NC. As the meet was wrapping up we had an officially unofficial excursion to a local drag strip, and one of our Studebakers, a freshly restored 46 pickup, set a new record at that strip for the slowest speed ever recorded. Wonder how its speed compared with the Trabbie.

That was just awesome! I so, so, wish I had been there to support Team Trabant. When it comes to class that little Trabant was the winner, before it even moved, slightly backwards and then forwards. Sometimes you don't have to come first to be a winner.

To be fair, I didn't think it would do it in under 30 seconds; nearly got up to 50mph as well... damn son, not bad for a 'trottelwagen' (walking pace car) as they're affectionately known. During my national service as part of the NATO forces in Germany, there was this career soldier at my barracks who had a souped up Wartburg (another two-stroke former East German abomination), which would just about do 140mph flat out. That was great fun, zooming up to a 5-series BMW in the fast lane of the autobahn with the left indicator going (signalling 'move over'). The double take people would do as they checked their mirrors was hilarious (Germans generally cruise at 110-115mph on the derestricted sections).

Great story! I've always had an interest in the "Farty Hans" (I think they were nicknamed that?) as they were driven by the posh people in the DDR, so it would be brilliant to see one drag off a modern German performance car. But for me, the Trabbi is even more interesting, if only because it was even more awful and I'm impressed how enterprising people made them more comfortable and reliable.

Wikipedia hilariously claims the Trabant can get to 100 km/h (62 freedoms per Sunday service) in 21 seconds. However, if this took 26-27 just to hit 50 mph, it probably takes somewhere around a minute to reach that under optimal conditions.
