Thank you for this video. We are looking to do the exact same with a farm gate to secure our property during our custom build and then replace it with a decorative automatic gate. This made me confident my husband and I can do this ourselves without hiring help.

A tip i learned from a old ww2 vet,,he said to always paint bottom 3-4 ft of post with creosote or roof tar to preserve post form rot,,using cement even on treated wood causes rot eventually,,being that you have a 6/6 post i doubt you have a issue but 4/4s installed with concrete always seem to start leaning after 5 -6 years,,old guys are the best when it comes to building stuff the right way,,FYI gates and locks are for honest people,,i have had my tube gates cut in half with a sawzall so 4 wheelers could trespas son my prop

I pour the cement dry down into the post hole with the wooden post already in the hole. Then I add water then mix and pack the cemente mix and make sure I pack a lot of cement around the top of the hole then slope the concrete away from the wooden post so that rain water would drain away from the wooden post. I also paint the bottom of my post about 3 feet from the botom with Leak stopper roofing paste (a tar like solution). I've had post in the sandy soil over 20 years and the posts are super sturdy. No rot, no leaning posts. I've even bumped the post with my tractor and not one issue.

We install those automatic gates all the time. If you don't have a ton of sun all the time. Run a wire too if you use it a lot. Most people with the solar gate call to back to get permanent power.

Very cool but how do you install the top hinge 'down'. Seems like the gate, itself, would get in the way?

See the bottom hinge first then rotate the top into pace then tighten. Locks it all in.

Nice video, but I do these all the time. Fast Setting concrete gets dumped in the with water, no pre-mixing per instructions that's why you buy that instead of regular concrete. Posts always get buried by 1/3 the height so gates (or fence) don't sag. I did a 10' gate post buried 48". A 7' gets buried 36". A 6" post gets an 18" hole, that why people's stuff sags all the time. Read Sakrete or Quickrete's sites. You did more work than needed mixing concrete and less work in digging the right hole size. The hinge part is accurate is security is a concern.

Thank you very much for the help. It's holding up so far but may need work in the future. Take care.

Cool video thanks for sharing but you have way too much water mixed with your concrete because when you have too much water like that the concrete is a lot weaker compared to when you just have barely enough water to mix all the dry concrete together where none of it isn't dry anymore and also you should have touched up that gate with a few fresh cans of spray paint just to spruce it up since you reinstalled it but nonetheless cool video and I appreciate you sharing it!

Sorry to here you get so many trespassers, that is the pits. I'm designing and welding up my own bespoke farm gate. It's going to have wire mesh on the outside to keep dogs out, as dog walkers come passed my property. This might be a dumb question, but how far off the ground whould you suggest the bottom of the gate be.

Ooh, Id' say only a few inches if you can. Lower the better! Thanks!

@@RidgeLife I have a quick question. What's the max distance separation between the Post & the Gate where it attaches to the J-bolt? I am planning a 16-ft gate (minus 4-5 inches for hardware) but I installed my RR ties at a separation distance of 17-ft. I found a 18" J-bolt online in lieu of a 12" J-bolt. Would a Post-to-Gate distance of 8" be too much stress on the 18"x3/4" J-bolt? Thanks in advance. (1st time installer) 👍🏼
@DarrenM898 Жыл бұрын
How far apart do you set the post to account for the length of the hinge, etc. I'm looking at a 12' gate using 6x6 posts, I was thinking of 13' center to center of each post hole.
@RidgeLife Жыл бұрын
I added 6' to both sides.

How much concrete did you end up using? How many 50 lb bags would you suggest?
