How to install a full mortise chest lock

In this video I show how I install a full mortise chest lock to a display cabinet that I made in one of my woodworking videos. In this woodworking video I show how I route the mortise to fit the lock box in. And I also show how I route the mortise I need to fit the faceplate. I also cut the keyhole and I put the keyhole scutcheon.

Rockler, Woodworker's Supply, and Wood Craft all have similar locks that can be used. You did a fantastic job on the installation. It is a difficult job. Es bueno Senior.

Thanks much. This was super helpful to me when I had to figure out how to install an almost identical full mortise chest lock on a tool box (lock purchased from Woodcraft in USA). However, I found it easer to mortise first for the lock body using a 5/16" straight bit that exactly matches the width. I then slipped the lock into the mortise in order to mark the outline for the shallow mortise that receives the body's upper flange.

I have a question. I have a N old drop front desk with a full mortise lock in it. We don’t have the key and I may have to replace the mortise lock. What do you feel is the best way to remove it without damage to the drop desk front? I am almost to the point on the rehab where it would need to be done. Thank You.

You can buy a 45 degrees countersink drill bit at the hardware stores and sink the beveled hole into the cove plate holes and drill to flush fit the screw head. Next screw the over sized length wood screw into the counter sunk plate hole to a reasonable depth. Back the screw out completely and snip the excess screw length to avoid bottoming out the shortened screw. Now you have a flush fit screw on your cover plate escutcheon. I use this method on my locks. Thanks

Vincent Rolfe Back in the old days the keyholes used to have a brass "liner" around the inside of hole which was pushed/hammered in flush. It makes a better looking job of it, I don't know if you can still get them.

There were antiques of all sorts at the old printing company building with pistols, rifles, Smythe sewing for books and lots of dust on the third floor; old Black and Decker 1/4" drill that would send juice through your fingers if you touched something metal at the table. Somewhere I have seen lined holes like that but takes a while to recall what and where. Right now I am working on walnut antique rifle boxes from 150 years ago in the UK and those have brass corners and swing locks along the face side ends with a half mortise key lock in the center. A machinist I know has turned 5/8" brass rod to make knurling for the escutcheons that are inlaid slightly. I am getting into polishing the brass with rouge and such. In the future I will laser ding bat designs on the lid and water jet the designs in brass and polish to a high brilliance. There are people in large metro areas who want that sort of thing.
