This is a really great video... you should make more. Most people suck at explaining and editing for time, etc. etc... your video is concise and clear and easy to understand. Brilliant.

No one wants a cord dangling from a classy-looking fireplace. As a remodeling contractor presently doing a remodel involving a heating contractor installing one of these, I would have preferred seeing a direct-wire setup here and this is what I was searching for. Some municipalities require a switch. Others, a simple receptacle installed in the firebox wall. I can't find any information locally so I will probably go all the way with both a switch and a built-in receptacle, charging my client accordingly. This was quite informative. Thanks much.

ha, I just go off what customer wants. this customer didn't want to pay an electrician. So the video is done accordingly
@bobvogel68444 жыл бұрын
@@embersliving Well, your video helped me sort this out anyway, lol. Cutting out the inside of the existing firebox to fish a wire to the back of the gas unit was no easy chore so I can see why a customer would want to duck the cost and just go with a cord up to a receptacle they could hide.

It was an additional $500 to have the outlet mounted for our conversion. I found it well worth it to not have an ugly cord coming out of the fireplace front... nothing screams "retrofitted" more than that as you know if it were original they would have done it right. In our case they just fished metal-clad cable down the ash dump into the garage and tapped into power there. They did the same with the gas line which we didn't have.

I’d personally put a switched receptacle inside. So you can switch the fireplace on and off without having to plug and unplug.

Stellar, 100% you did a fabulous job! Just 1 thing to recommend, on side brick you can bore 1" hole, turn off electrical to that outlet, take out outlet to just wires, take out electrical plastic or metal box, so wires are just sticking out. Check for water lines or whatever might be behind wall, by checking the other side and then drill sideways to that outlet, put in a new blue box that sinches itself in run romex to it from fireplace, just use a gfci outlet so it can trip easily for fireplace if their is an issue. Have done that many times, no issues. Doesnt happen all of the time but can be done. Just extra info is all.

Absolutely. I'm not sure why he stresses hiring so much aside for supporting the trades.... Homeowners are allowed to do this work as long as you pull permits.

Does the insert need to be fastened to the opening or does it just sit on its legs inside the opening. I ask because I’m tiling the front of my fireplace. The original opening is arched. I need to knock out two bricks to fit the insert. Essentially, I’m creating a false rectangular opening using backer board and tile. The decorative plate that comes with the insert will cover it. If it needs to be secured to some structure than my plan is screwed. Thoughts?
@embersliving3 жыл бұрын
As long as everything is non combustible your good. And the unit just sits in there free
@surlycrosscheck13 жыл бұрын
@@embersliving thanks for the response. Should be non combustible. It’s just cement board and tapcons, thin set and tile. 🤷🏼♂️👍

Hey! Very helpful video. Did you have enough space to run the lines through by opening the dampener or did you remove the dampener since it is to be left open? Thanks!
@embersliving4 жыл бұрын
We just barely had enough room. Most inserts are a 3” liner so you will have plenty of space.

My fireplace has a capped gas line on the left side with a valve on the wall. I'm assuming this was for a gas starter. I've had people tell me its not safe to burn wood fires with the gas line there. Any truth to that? In other words, would the capped pipe "melt"? haha
@embersliving4 жыл бұрын
you would have to check local codes on that
