How To Install A Hard Drive In A HikVision NVR NEW

In this video I'll be showing you how to install a surveillance hard drive into your HikVision DVR/NVR.
We recommend using a surveillance specific hard drive as these are designed for constant writing of data 24/7 365 days a year, do not use a cheaper or desktop type hard drive as these will fail very quickly

Hi thank you for your video really liked how you slowed things down to give tips on the wire installation making sure you line it up well I have a Quick question Im waiting on my drive to arrive but its going to be the new year before it gets here I have all my cameras and NVR ready I do have a 2 tb passport HD which is cased could I plug this into the usb port on the front just to test the cameras and check the system is up and running as amazon said I have up to a month to return the cameras if there is any problems your thoughts

Hi Steve good to hear! You don’t need to plug any hard drive into the system to check it’s all up and running to be fair. The NVR will beep every 15 seconds because of no hdd, but you’ll still be able to configure and test the rest!

@@HikVisionGuru Thanks I ordered another HD and got it up and running today my set up was a little different from yours and I got a liitle lost I did manage to get five of my six cameras working but one of the cat 5 wires got damaged during construction so spent the ret of the afternnon trying trace that and fix it, Im still struggling to connect my phone app to the nvr will try and re watch your vidio again see where I go wrong

How about connecting the cables to the drive before screwing it into the NVR? Any reason not to attach the cables first?

Hi mate need help ive installed a ssd on a 7204 hikvision issue im having when the hdd is plugged in hikvision wont boot but does when i unplug hdd ? Any ideas or maybe does the hdd need formatting its a new ssd 512gb

Hi, do we need to format the HDD first using windows from our laptop/desktop?

You format the HDD via the NVR/DVR interface, no need to do it via a computer

I’ve just installed a new HDD (sea gate a like for like replacement) but having installed it, the system just doesn’t see a HDD and there’s no apparent way to add one?

All of the cabling plugged in nice and tightly/snug? I’d double check the connections. Are you going to the device settings page, going to storage/storage management screen and seeing no hard drives whatsoever on the screen like in the video?

Yep all cabling connected fine. This was to replace a faulty/old HDD that was showing an obvious fault after years of use. Connected up the new one (exact same layout/box as yours in video) fired it back up, and on the HDD menu there’s nothing showing in the HDD list, & no apparent way to add one. A cable having failed seems unlikely, but I’m at a bit of a loss as to what else to try.

@@KitReynolds-d8g yes very unlikely cable issue unless you can see any obvious damage. Next port of call would be try a new DVR/NVR. The hdd will always show on the list whether it’s initialised or not

The power cable is a 4 pin male to Sata power cable, the other is a sata data cable. The screws and cables are included with every new HikVision NVR/dvr.

They are supplied with every brand new HikVision dvr/nvr. They are a 4pin to sata power cable. The blue cable is a standard sata data cable. We do sell them if you need any.

Hello Jarrah, no you don’t need to install any firmware, the HDD is solely used for video storage. The firmware is on the NVRs/DVRs internal memory.
