I’m just impressed someone finally knows which is the right way to apply pressure with channellocks. BTW - i love all the armchair critics that sit around looking for stupid things to pick apart - like “tearing up a fitting” (cause teeth marks were left on it) that will probably be turned twice over the course of 30 years. Not to mention the guy CLEARLY stated this was a video guide to make something that might seem intimidating for a homeowner, look easier by using the most simple tools around... Given the choice of paying somebody hundreds to hook up 3 lines, and getting ripped off on the water heater itself, ill go out on a limb and say the homeowner will be happy someone showed them how easy this can be.

I don’t believe that not checking for gas leaks is a “stupid thing to pick apart” Paying someone “hundreds of bucks to hook up three lines” to save your family’s lives in an explosion and fire at 3 A.M. if you don’t know what your doing is a great investment. in. My opinion, So many errors in this video presentation makes it almost useless

@@buzzincalifornia you have a better chance of hitting the lotto 3 times in a row, then a house 'exploding' from a gas leak so small you need to check and see if it's even there. So please stop with the fantasy scenarios. Keep your California opinions in California ;)

You can leave the plastic sleeve in the Sharkbite when using copper. From the Sharkbite Installation manual "The PEX Stiffener is not required for use with CPVC and copper tubing, however these two types of tubing fit over the PEX Stiffener easily and hold it against the tube stop". So you can leave them in. Should have deburred the inside of the copper pipes where they were cut.

You said the cold water pipe is connected to an anode rod. Actually, the cold water is connected to a pipe that delivers the incoming water to the bottom of the tank so you don't disrupt the thermal stratification in the tank. The hot water rises to the top, and the cold water should always be at the bottom. The house draws from the top of the tank where the hot water is due to stratification. The sacrificial anode is usually another fitting on the top of the tank.

The prices ARE ridiculous! I tried getting the tank and installation at Lowe's in Wilmington, Delaware, today. They arranged for their installer to call me -- he would be doing the delivery as well. I had chosen the A. O. Smith 40-gallon short gas HW heater, which Lowe's sells for $579. He quoted me a price of $1,481. That's $900 for installation! Hah! No way. I'm a 69-year-old woman, but I've always done all my own plumbing. I installed a HW heater about 25 years ago and at that time I sweat-soldered the copper pipes -- it's actually kind of fun to do, but the shark-bite connections look a lot easier. Just replaced my old iron toilet flange and installed a new toilet last week. So I think I'll be able to save myself 900 bucks. This video was great!

Hey Army, thanks for the simple to follow, basic instructions for replacing a gas hot water heater. Do some of the commenters have valid points? Absolutely, but I for one never rely solely on any one youtube video or google searched set of instructions to attempt a project I've never done before. I would say, learn from their informed points, but ignore the juvenile, condescending remarks which aren't helpful to anyone.

Sharkbite and other manufacturers strongly recommend deburring (not done in this video) and cleaning (also not done) the ends of cut copper tubing before inserting into their connectors. They also stress the importance of marking the insertion depth (typically 1 inch) with a permanent marker so that (a) you know you've (re)inserted it deeply enough (#1 mistake!), and (b) a plumbing inspector can readily see that you've done so (and knew what you were doing).

I know that the yellow tape is required on propane gas lines, not sure about natural gas. I have been towing and maintaining RV's for over 40 years, one tends to learn a thing or two along the way. Gas lines, water lines, 120 VAC wiring, and 12VDC wiring. Thankfully most RVs have gone to using PEX TUBING FOR PLUMBING.

Actually, you should never use Teflon paste or Teflon tape on gas lines. If you are not careful it gets into the gas control valve and cause it to malfunction. I would use yellow rector seal pipe dope. That’s the code in our area. No Teflon on gas.

If I didn't have license and wanted to make a "how to" video, I'd make damn sure that I was doing everything correctly and following code/law. I don't think I could live with myself if I found out somebody got hurt or died after watching a video that I created. Making a video like this is just plain irresponsible and potentially dangerous.

I'm a licensed plumber. In the trade for over 30 years. Most codes are or are in the process of becoming Universalized nationally. I know the codes. That's my job. So , yes, I do say this installation is not up to code. It would not pass inspection. The installer could be fined and warned never to perform such work without the proper licenses or face legal prosecution. You see, these codes are put in place to protect the public from hacks like this. It's also the reason licenses are required for someone to perform this type of work. A homeowner has every right to his own work on his own property. And there are plenty of videos on KZbin that are great and show a proper, code compliant, and safe way of installing such equipment. This is not one of them. And by looking at the vast amount of negative comments for this video, I'm not the only one who has this opinion. I'm not a drama, queen. I'm a professional tradesman looking out and trying to help and protect people who want to save a few bucks by installing their own plumbing and plumbing equipment. And if I see a video that I think is not of goid standards, I'm going to let the public know it. I feel that it's not only a good idea to do so, it also my responsibility. This guy is a moron. He talks the talk but he don't walk the walk. You can argue all you want with me. It just shows you're not very knowledgeable about this sort of thing.

@@mikechirhart8840 you realize that there is no codes stating a homeowner isn't allowed to install a hot water heater right? for you code means job security. that's why you guys push for it. some places make you obtain a final inspection like where I live. however I doubt that would fail. you know how I know? my hot water heater looked about like that with the flu crooked because of a beam above. my home passed a home inspection done by a inspector from the FHA and a hired private inspector that was doing the upgraded more strict inspection. sharkbite fittings are also the new codes. pex, cpvc, pvc etc, thats all fittings, glue and plastic too. so when I see you guys bitching about guys using this stuff makes me laugh. you're using it too but think you required special training to use simple shit. those push together fittings are also all over cars. have been for decades. from water hoses, brake lines, fuel lines, clutch lines. my old truck you was just a plastic coupling for the heater core. you could literally move the pipe around but it never leaks. and 99% of these videos the plumbers found the easiest one to work on to show off their mad skills. lets see you all do one in a closet around a bunch of other pipes and beams that cannot be moved. or one that some hack has 2 different line sizes in it. all you guys do is make videos of the 1% installs you ever do. the rest of them probably look like hack jobs. why would the flue need checked if it was already working in the first place? that house looks less than 20 years old. I'm sure it was built with all this in mind. although I'm surprised its not a power vent water heater.

Did you take out a permit? A few mistakes to boot I am a licensed gas fitter the B vent your on about is actually C vent and looks like hell after you connected it. Yellow tape is for gas white is water and air only the white tape is permeable to Natural gas and will leak. Always always soap up your fittings after turning on the gas not sure where your nose was trained but its just standard practice to soap the fitting up a fitting may be cracked due to over tightening. You are required 18 inches of copper pipe connected to the tank the heat will affect the plastic pex piping. And I hope to hell you didn't use the old draft hood off the old tank. I was called out to a house a women and baby where being poisoned by carbon monoxide the plumber had installed the old draft hood on the new tank and the gas was not combusting properly inside the new tank and spilling into the house causing a major Hazard could of killed the occupants. Also you should have piped the relief line over the drain hole if it goes off it will cause a major flood. And I would never use those shark bites expensive and not necessary soldering a couple of couplings is easy.

I used to believe the best was the hard plumb, but recently hearing the the braided SS lines and flex gas line are SAFER, given the earthquake considerations, vibration and danger of tipping. Thank you for this well-done video. I'm not going to change out a water heater, but I'm going to install a hot water recirculator pump on my few-months-old heater, and this has given me the courage to attempt it. When I got a quote for the water heater, I also got an estimate for the recirculator, and that alone with labor was going to be about $1,000. I just bought a recirculator for $160 from a hardware store that's going out of business. My heater's hot water outlet has one of those flexible copper tubes, so the installation won't be too difficult, I think.

Most people never have any leaks with a SharkBite fitting at a hot water heater, but 1 out of 10 homeowners will experience a SharkBite failure at the water heater after only 10 years, and that leak will cause a lot of damage if there is not a floor drain nearby. If you are using a Sharkbite like that, then ALWAYS pressure-wrap the SharkBite fitting and the copper pipe itself with self-fusing silicone tape that is designed to seal pinhole leaks in pipes. That way 'WHEN' the o-rings on the SharkBite fails, the high-pressure wrapping of tape over the fitting will hold in the water and prevent any leaks. But you really have to pull HARD on that silicone tape when you are wrapping it around the pipe, you have to pull hard to create the pressure on the pipe and fitting from the tape that will be greater than the water pressure inside the pipe. It's a lot easier to simply use solder (or ProPress fittings if you've got the expensive tools already).

I think it should at least be mentioned that most local plumbing codes require at least 18" total pipe length between the water heater and plastic tubing like Pex (seen crimped onto copper assemblies just above unit). Something work taking into account when arbitrarily shortening those metal stubs! Sharkbite makes great flex connectors (with or without built-in ball valves) just for this purpose.

Hello. Now i have to do heating and plumbing work when the need arises and one of the small things you pick up over time, and is what i do as well is, as an example is to work on the 22mm copper first and then the smaller 15mm pipe second because it's easier to bend an alter 15mm pipe around a 22mm pipe rather than the other way round. The reason i say this is because this applies to the flue and the copper in this video. Firstly that flue doesn't look vertical and seems to be catching or being obstructed by the copper work. What would have been better is to get the flue vertical and right first and then do the copper work after using pulled bends and any soldered joints to work round the flue, although your point is not to solder, i think if you had used elbows, bends etc the pipework would look better. I say 22mm and 15mm as that's what we use in the UK but it might be half inch and three quarter where you are maybe

Following code and steps are a must. A Waterheater is a bomb if not plumbed properly.

SharkBite fittings are a wonderful tool for a DIY or people who don't know how to solder. But, him not showing as the correct steps is a disservice. Need to clean the copper pipe, debur the copper, and use the SharkBite depth tool to see if you've pushed the fitting correctly. This half assed install can cause leaks and make people hesitate to use SharkBite.

@@rayluna9860 , water heater cannot bomb if not plumbed correctly. Water has nothing to do with explosions. Its the gas connection that needs to be leak-free.

Very complete and detailed. Thank you. You might say something about licensing and inspecion requirements for installers in some jurisdictions, like Montgomery County Maryland's WSSC requirements. This would mean that DIY installations may not be allowed there.

I didn't hear you say anything about burs that may be created when you cut the copper tubing lines. Some pipe cutters that cost over $40 may prevent burrs but the cheaper kind for $15 could be a problem so you need a de-burring tool or oval file and steel wool or round brush to smooth the cut pieces about a half inch inside and out especially around the cut to taper the end a little if not the bur will create a vortex that will erode about an inch from the connect to give you a pin hole leak over time.

Thomas Quinn he called it B vent, when it is C vent, he called it a braided hose, and it's a corrugated stainless steel gas appliance connector, venting is a hack job....be careful who you let into your home to do work.

I'm only going to get a couple of points because I could go on for a while he needs to learn the difference between a dip tube and a Anno rod you're supposed to have 18 inch of copper pipe between the top of the tank and the pex or cpvc pipe because you could melt the line you should never run a dryer line to a hot water tank and someone else mentioned details buring the pipe we definitely have to do that because there's a chance of the fitting shooting off the pipe thank you.

I'm confused about the sediment tap. Is that just the hose connection at the bottom? And did you keep the water on to keep pressure? If you did that how did the tank fully empty?

The guy at home depot tried to sell me on the shark bites. I told him heck no. I already had sharkbites in my house 3 out of 4 were leaking. Soldering is actually super easy. Plus cheaper. And that little blue propane tank has lasted me 5yrs! I've used it for seized bolts, starting bonfires, and even powering a small grill when I ran out of propane. And it's still kicking.

That’s not a valve that turns on and off, it is what’s called a vacuum breaker. Without going into a long explanation, what it does is prevent the water from being sucked back out of the tank the wrong direction should a negative pressure happen somewhere in the water system. It’s a cross contamination prevention device and is required by code.

You might want to soap test the gas fittings you installed cause that minor tightening does not convince me. Also the last thing you should do before you walk away from it, is to test and make sure the vent is venting properly.

I cant drain mine. I broke the little part that holds the valve handle off. Can that whole drain faucet be replaced? If not i'm looking at getting another hot water heater huh? Its only 3 to 4 years old but only been drained once.. Second time there was to much crap inside and i couldn't break it loose enough to drain faster then a dripping so didn't get much out after 3 hours and gave up. third time I broke handle and piece it attaches to off. So what happens now if I cant clean it out? water wont get hot? It does have a pressure relief valve up top to keep it from exploding on me and thats working good. Thanks
