In this video, we install our Maxprop propeller. Prior to this video we removed the propeller, cleaned off the old antifouling paint, degreased it, and added 2 more degrees of pitch. Now, we put it back on the boat. Thankfully Molly is on the job to ensure that the entire process goes smoothly.

One of my proudest moments as a parent was when we were on vacation my step daughter's car broke down. She could see it was a coolant pipe leaking along the front of the engine. She took measurements and made a drawing (in the days before cell phone cameras) and she went to the auto parts place I frequented. She was able to get the part, replace it on her own. I asked her how she did it, and she said "watching you." She was around 17 years old at the time.

Hey Ben, I've outfitted my boat with an A/C like that 12,000BTU, during the day due to the sun hitting the deck, it would really heat up which I would imagine any A/C would have an issue with. Solution I found was to order a triangle sunblock which is attached via bungie cords to the life lines creating shade on the top deck. The difference is night and day.
@richardhobbs7107

Sean - You have found the most beneficial ingredient for keeping any space cool. Block the Sun ! ! ( shade ) Then you add your A/C or Swamp-cooler or Fan or ice chest filled with sub-cooled beverage . . . . . . Yup ! night (no sun) vs day (hot sun) . . . . . . DOH !

The grease you showed from disassembly of your MaxProp is exactly what the grease looked like at the disassembly on two of our MaxProps. The grease in the new tube has a yellowish tint but is primarily a white grease, containing calcium, I believe. On a side note - that grease is an excellent antifoul. We ran for a year with no barnacles, by rubbing it on the body and blades every few months (underwater). I picked up on this when the hull was grown up but the areas where the squeeze-out on the prop had no growth.
@davidalbright7335
@davidalbright7335 2 жыл бұрын
We have the same LED fixture, from your Amazon haul, in our galley. Prepare to have extremely bright light. If yours are exactly the same, you can rock the rocker switch twice and it will produce a softer, more yellow light. We love ours.
@Sailboatstory
@Sailboatstory 2 жыл бұрын
That's interesting to hear. So the white grease turns green instead of the green grease turning white. What are you using as antifoul on your propeller now?
@davidalbright7335
@davidalbright7335 2 жыл бұрын
@@Sailboatstory right now, we are using algae and barnacles. Hahahaha. I ordered a product from a reputable company, when we hauled out last year, that was supposed to be equivalent to Propspeed. Turns out that it attracted growth. I removed it on the next haulout and sprayed rattle can zinc spray on it. So far, so good. We have the three-blade MaxProp Easy. We can change the pitch in the water by replacing the set screws with shorter or longer screws. Ours has an insertable zerk fitting, for recharging with grease. They are really innovative at PSI. Your helper was doing a fine job. I struggled with my old two-blade MaxProp and had to get help (I was all thumbs with the grease).

We had one of those A/C units on our sailboat while on the hard in Trinidad. It did not cool much for us. We bought a window unit that we sat in the companionway. It had more BTUs and worked better. Still really only cooled the main salon & galley of our 48 ft sailboat. We had to rent a room at Peaks Marina for a couple of days till we splashed again. We had a max prop on our boat also. That brought back memories of our work that summer. ♡ Glad to see Molly helping so much and willing to learn new things. She is a great helper. ♡ God bless.

Tis indeed. It's not my style, really, as I prefer things to be simpler, but it came with the boat so we'll put it to use. There's also a fixed blade prop on the boat as well that we'll keep on hand as a spare.

Ben, last week when you were working with the coupling, I saw what looked like a brake disk. The boat has a break on that shaft to keep to keep it from spinning under sail? Hope to buy your family dinner sometime, we just missed you at Titusville. S/V Drifter

About your AC problem.... That type of ac unit has to be mounted with no more than 4 feet of hose distance. The fan inside is not is not powerful enough to draw in cool air at greater distance. Therefore it cannot cool properly. Move the AC and you will probably see a vast difference. I live in south FL and I have been using them for a long time.
@Sailboatstory
@Sailboatstory 2 жыл бұрын
I'm aware of that limitation, but have not tried a relocation of the unit. I tried shortening the hoses as much as possible by taping the extra length together with the blue tape wraps near the hatch. I don't have many options for relocating it, but I suppose I can try running the hoses to a portlight or one way or another trying to drastically shorten the hoses to see if that makes a difference. Thanks for the insights. I'll try that on my next trip down to the boat.

Enjoy watching your family and your adventures. Just a question on the reassembly of the maxprop. Are you using some form of thread locker in the reassembly?
@Sailboatstory
@Sailboatstory 2 жыл бұрын
All the bolts have cotter pins locking them into place. No liquid threadlock required or recommended. I believe the mechanical locks are preferred so that the prop can be worked on in the water if need be.

Do you have the intake air supply for the AC coming from the cabin or outside?
@Sailboatstory
@Sailboatstory 2 жыл бұрын
From outside. That's how it's designed to work, but I did try having the intake pulling from the interior of the boat as well - sort of like if a car's AC was on "recirculate", but that didn't make any difference. I think it's a problem with the compressor, perhaps? It kicks on with an obvious clunk, but only stays on for 30 seconds or so before cycling off again for 5-10 minutes.
