How to install a NTE5 Telephone Master Socket and Telephone Extension

Very helpful video Thanks you, while this covid 19 is around the Openreach guy could not come in my house for sky phone & broadband connection he did his work at the top of the road in the green box and I had to plug a filter into the old BT socket and run the phone and broadband from that and a extension lead up the hall for power. To get this sorted I wanted to drill through the old metal back box and run a cable outside to neatly to the side of the hall wall and comeback in under the stairs close to a socket, I was just wondering what cable is best for this now, and do I use a new master socket or please advise what socket I can use under the stairs. Thanks again for all advice.

Hi mate just wanted to u need that black wire.. For connection... Its my new house and I'm waiting for engenier to install dsl scorket.. But they the line is on.. And I can see just white wire.. I have just checked and I have 5 pair cable that comes through from ducting, it is currently in a screw in terminal do you think that I would fit in the IDC terminals it seems quite thin compared to the extension phone wiring.

Hi, thanks. Yes you can as long as you don't have an ADSL or VDSL faceplate on your master socket.

Hi Vince I presume if you wanted to add additional slave sockets (extensions) to your one-extension example, you just copy the colours and parallel up using the same colours on 2, 3 and 5 either from the master or the first slave? Thanks Steve.

I had a very old style master socket which had Orange, blue, green and Brown wires. I ordered the NTE5 from you and installed fine. also bought a vDSL plate on top of that. ping is faster but both wireless and powerline connections are roughly the same as before with the old master socket. I'll probably need to replace the old cable that comes from the pole into the bathroom then along the coridoor to the livingroom where the socket is. (no other sockets or extension sockets). any advice on replacement of the ancient cable? thanks.

+BRIAN MACKAY You can just use internal 2 pair telephone cable, just make sure it is pure copper. The colour of the wires will be different but I can advise on that after purchase. It may not make any difference if the old cable is in good condition so it may be a waste of time.

hi ive got the old net5 box now theres a red & blue wire rigged up to a & b and ive got a brown & green wire thats not connected to anything but i can see that its obviously for the 5,3,2 which wire goes where im confused lol?

Thanks for the video. My father-in-law has a phone issue, but the phone works OK in the test socket (NTE5). He use to use an extension and an external bell ringer, but these are no longer required. If I removed the front plate and removed all the wires, would the phone from the master socket still work? I assume the incoming A/B wire connection will be at the front socket when the front plate is fitted? Thanks, Steve

Steve you may have done this already... but as long as you are removing the cables from the face plate of the NTE5 master then yes anything connected directly to the master with the face plate fully connected WILL work.

Fantastic video. Quick question; what is that cheap tool called to push the wires in? Will the extension be just as good for putting a spliter in and using the phone line/broadband without any issue as just using direct from the Master socket would be?

Eden B Hi, the tool is called many different things, IDC tool, punchdown tool, telecom tool, krone tool, wire inserter. If you google/ebay/amazon any of them you will probably find them. Normally the broadband will work better at the master socket but if you use proper copper twisted pair cable like CW1308 for the extension then you will probably not notice any difference.Thanks Vince

Good evening, I have an old GPO (probably 1970's) junction box (with a single screw in the middle) in the kitchen that connects to a wire that comes in through the wall from the telephone pole outside. There is a BLACK wire (not connected), a GREEN wire (not connected), 3 YELLOW wires (not connected), a WHITE wire (connected) and a ORANGE wire (connected). I have bought a Master Socket NTE5A. Can I disconnect the wires from the old GPO junction box (the only ones connected are the WHITE and ORANGE) and reconnect the WHITE and ORANGE wires to A (WHITE) and B (ORANGE) on the NTE5A please? I don't want to run an extension off of this. Thanks in advance.

Hi Vince, I've had a problem with my internet connection and Sky have advised me it's an internal issue, probably the master socket. Upon removal of the face plate there aren't any wires connected. I then remove the master socket it's self (screwed into electricians metal back box), so find that blue and white blue wires are connected to terminals A and B, the wires are screwed in (hope you're following me here). As per your above video, it would seem that the wires I can see are from an extension cable. I have green, green white, blue, blue white, orange and orange white. The cable housing is grey too, not black. My problem is I don't know which wires to connect to the A and B terminals on the main socket, and then which wires to connect to the 2, 3 and 5 terminals. It appears there are too few wires. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance! Jacob

Vince just had Virgin installed router etc is in my bedroom but I want phone downstairs where previous sky phone was which worked perfectly via an external cat 5 cable for some strange reason it doesn’t work with virgin now didn’t want extension in house . Only used 3 & 5 previously any ideas basically just using cat 5 as external extension lead 👍

hi i have black wire from the back of my master socket to my sky digital box in living and a black wire in the front part of master socket for a 2nd phone in kitchen ! is it possible to run the white cable from master socket to bedroom extension socket just like your video shows ?

+Conor mallon You can only connect 2 wires in each IDC terminal so you cannot connect the 3 cables unless you use some 3 wire jelly crimps pushed in the back of the master socket backbox to make 2 wires into one wire by connecting for example the 2 blue extension wires with another bit of short blue wire and punch that short wire into the IDC terminal so now only one wire is in the IDC terminal even though both blue wires are still connected. Or run the white cable from one of the extensions or use a BT78 junction next to the master to connect up all the extensions and then un a cable from the BT78 to the master socket front plate.
