Replaced dead power supply in older PC today. New power supply had a 6-pin PCI-E connector. Old power supply had a 4-pin one. Like the 4-pin one on the PC's graphics card. Whoops. But new power supply had two 4-pin Molex connectors not being used. Cut off 4-pin PCI-E connector w/ wires from old power supply and wired it to the Molex connectors. Viola! PC is running again. Plus you can actually see the screen to login and do something. Technically only watched the beginning of this video with the wiring diagram. But that was exactly what I needed. Thanks! PS Will watch your motorcycle vids later. Not a wrench but have had to reconfigure aspects of my bike.

In total, you wire 3x12V (yellow) wires on the PCI-E connector, to 2x12V wires coming from the power supply. The reason why there are 3 yellow wires on the PCI-e connector, is because 2 wires can not carry the required current. Wiring them back to 2 wires on the PSU means that those 2 wires coming from the PSU are being asked to potential take the current that 3 wires should be taking, that is asking for trouble, especially in applications that push the graphics card. It may work for you depending on the overall max current taken by your graphics card, but should not be used in a generic demonstration of how wire a 6-pin PCI-e into a system that doesn't support 6-pin PCI-E, as some folks WILL have graphics card that will fail if they attempt to use your solution.

Great DIY for someone that has a older psu laying around and don't want to spend the money for the right power supply or adapter. FYI depending on your current system configuration this won't always be recommended as your power supply probably under rated already and most newer current graphics card require 450 or better watt psu anyways and your gonna overload your old psu if it even power up afterwords

This is what i did. I had a power supply which only had one pci-e connector, and my gtx 960 that i recently bought needed two pci-e connectors, and two power plugs came with the card so i used one of them and plugged it in and it worked. A few months later and i still haven't run into any problems, all of the games i play run really smooth :)

I know this this comment is really late but according to my research I know that the 6 pin pcie connector can also have 2 yellow 12V wire (the middle yellow wire don't) and will work just fine as long as you don't extend the 6 pin to 8 pin connector. -sorry for my bad English 🙂

dont do this shit... the adapters that come with the crards even tell you it can permanently damage your card. yet they ship them out with the card. some of the newer revisions dont ship this adapter with the card anymore. that is for a reason. if you just want it working its a good bet. just use a psu calculator and check how much wattage youe need vs what you have.
