So are the protruding bits on the back crushed down also, or ground off?
@davegoldsmith40202 жыл бұрын
The hole should be drilled square, if possible separate the pieces and clear off any swarf that could stop the two surfaces mating. just as important as the correct diameter is the correct length, the rivets in this video are too long, which is not as bad as to short. Too short and they may pull through, too long and they might not pull up tight enough. Look up online the rivet diameter and thickness to be riveted and it will tell you how long a rivet you need. If the two faces to be riveted are not held together the rivet may swell between the two. If you do not want scratches on your metal beware that the rivet gun may jump as it snaps the rivet.
@rottenjonny Жыл бұрын
First thing I thought too, those rivets are WAY to long for the material.

If you can access the far side and the material is soft or flexible put a washer over the rivet.

Don’t use aluminum rivets when you’re doing two pieces of still use the steel rivets And also use rivets short enough so there’s not a long stem on the back Of your work

Would you need to tap the holes before or after you drill them prior to riveting the pieces of metal together? I'm planning a computer case mod. This seems to be the easiest way to do it since the skeleton of the computer case is already riveted anyway.

Why are the inside of the rivets sticking out so much? Aren't they supposed to be flattened against the material just like the other side?
@InspireDIY4 жыл бұрын
If you select the right size rivet for the materials you are fastening (not too long) it will be minimal, the backside will always protrude more than the front though.

Thanks for this video. Is there any weakness to using a rivet compared to using a screw or a nail? Keep up the good videos!
@richardsurrey6 жыл бұрын
A screw or nail wouldn't work to fix two plates together like this. You could use a bolt, but only if you have access to both sides, a rivet can be used with access to one side only. A bolt would generally provide a stronger and longer lasting fixing. A bolt can be dissembled more easily and is reusable, but this can be a disadvantage for security.
