I have struggled in the past to hang a prehung door. Instead of shimming and nailing this made so much sense. Utilize longer hinge screws to fasten and just worry about the hinge side. I loved it!!!!!!

Hanging doors is always a favorite of mine. One thing I was taught many years ago, determining the door swing, was to put your back to the jamb and if the door swing is to the left, left door swing etc. I have always screwed the jamb side as well because it's much easier to adjust as well if needed like you explained and reversing the shims is important as well. The door should stay closed and open at whatever distance it's open, not open on it's own. Of course old houses are tough if the walls are not plum. I have always put the top trim on if I didn't make up the trim with the biscuit unit with glue on the miters because I always found it easier to cut my miter on the legs of the casing then flip my casing and mark them all and number them if many doors. Always what makes it easy for each person. I always did the finish caulking etc in case the home owner was going to do the painting. You can't fill small spaces with paint. Love the style door as well. Much nicer than the traditional 6 panel wood grain look. I always loved smooth panel doors. Thank you again for the great job and video Josh. If you don't have another video before the holidays, I hope you and your family has a wonderful Merry Christmas and safe New Years.

I always enjoyed hanging doors as well. I actually used to install doors for Home Depot. I have probably installed hundreds of doors by this point. The handing of the door can be confusing to some people, but with a drawling it is a easier way to explain it to people. He biscuit would definitely be helpful on the 45s. I usually don’t do that but it would add extra security. Merry Christmas to you as well. Thanks a lot for your awesome comment David!

I think both comments are correct. I install all the floors that are hard first before the door. This means tile/hardwood. If the door is going to be installed in a place there is carpet, then install the door first and then the carpeting. Never put carpet under the door jamb.

Question for you - wouldn’t you want to not put the screw that’s holding the frame in place through the hinge? Cause when someone comes along and repaints the door frame and they take the hinges off then the door will fall out of place.
@TheExcellentLaborer Жыл бұрын
When a door is removed from the hinge, typically you would remove the pin and not the screws. I hope this helps!

@@TheExcellentLaborer but what about when you repaint the door frame, wouldn’t you remove the hinges from the frame to avoid painting them?
@JustinKais Жыл бұрын
@@wildernessworthy If repainting a frame, I wouldn't normally remove door trim. The trim will keep the frame in place. I suppose if you wanted to be extra careful you could shoot a nail through the shim on the hinge side as well.

Only thing missing Josh is that you did not make sure the floor was level as well as the rough opening because sometimes they can be so far out of whack. You can’t even place the door you have to pack it out first.

Can you tell me how wide the door opening have to be for let's say a 32 inch door? In other words, how do I frame the opening for a door if I have a 32 inch door? I think the opening had to be 34 inches wide, is that right?
@TheExcellentLaborer2 жыл бұрын
You always add 2 inches to the door width to create the rough opening. For instance, if the door is 32 inches the rough opening should be 34 inches wide. So yes, you are correct. I hope that helps!

I think you got the handing wrong. The way you figure out handing is you open the door, stand with your butt against the hinges, and whatever side the open door is on is the handing. In this case yes, the door is right handed, but if that same door were an out-swing door, as often an exterior door will be, then it would be left handed.

Be careful holding a piece against the right side of the miter saw with your left hand. Better to hold it with your right hand/arm and pull the saw down with your left arm.

As with every video you do not deal with out of level floor or worse twisted hinge side stud. There are 100's of video like yours that make it look easy but not dealing with the real world.
@jeromenewton2720 Жыл бұрын
You didn't mention step number one until the end of the video. It's a pre-hung door so to install it on an out of level floor may result in the latch being out of alignment as well as making getting the "reveals" consistent much more difficult. You are actually referring to gaps not "reveals." A reveal is a set back (a change in the plane of a surface,) or a recess. An empty space is a gap. Don't get me started on the terms "plumb" and "level." People misuse these all the time even though they are ninety degree opposites.
@BrendanOkeefeMusic.11 ай бұрын
I hate to talk smack because you seem like a good dude. You made some good points but…. First off you NEED a 6ft level. You can’t install a door with a 4ft level (unless you’re a seasoned pro). The level is only good for the length of the level. Other than that good work
@jebronlames7789 Жыл бұрын
I'm gonna stick the vid out Josh, but the way I learned is you lean your ass on the jam hinge side and which ever way you want it to swing your arm side of of swing is it. Left arm or right arm. Oh I'm only 61 yrs old. Lets proceed with vid, if I respond again I'm only pushing your algorithem.
