Is it necessary to connect the downspout? A section of my yard floods and I thought it would be nice to add a rain garden to make it more beautiful. Its just grass and dirt right now.

It may be tempting to put the rain garden in a part of the yard where water already ponds, but don't! A rain garden aims to improve infiltration, and the wet patches show where infiltration in the yard is slow. Check out our rain garden manual to help guide you in installing your rain garden. www.mmsd.com/what-we-do/green-infrastructure/rain-gardens

Call before you dig only marks from the street to your fence. You have to pay a private company to mark on your property.

Call 811 at least three working days before you start digging. Your local 811 call center will contact all the appropriate companies who will mark the location of their underground utilities in your work area. This is a free service and helps eliminate the danger and inconvenience of accidentally knocking out power, cable, or other utilities while you create your rain garden. Next, contact your local city or village to mark your lateral. This is the underground sewer pipe you own that carries water from your home to the city’s sewer pipe in the street. Keep your rain garden as far away from this pipe as possible. This may only be 2 or 3 feet in a city lot.
