This was very helpful... I installed my parents floodlight cam on the first try! A note... I couldn't rotate the lights 360°, so the hoods are all upside down. I think it's a newer design... there were no nuts to loosen, they just went so far, then stopped. Looks a little weird that way, but other than that, the whole unit works like a charm. Thanks for the guidance!

@Melissa Gray I'm very happy it went well and the video was helpful! There is nothing wrong with the hoods being upside down, but some people think it looks funny. Still works just fine. Thanks for the kind note, and i hope you will subscribe! :)

My floodlight cam is like this and lights filled with rainwater. The lights eventually stopped working from the water, so they had to send me a replacement. We’ve only had it about a year

I shared this video of yours with my sister and her boyfriend. They had bought some kit that came with several of these ring spotlight cams and gave me one of them. Anyhow they were trying to figure out where to place the other ones from their kit and I had pointed out that they should replace their existing lights in the back yard.

Ring isn't clear about eave mounting of the Floodlight cam. Their site says it is supported and also says its for wall mount only. I was able to install the device simply by loosening and rotating the camera and lights in the mounting fixture, no other changes required.

How did you get the lights to face that direction? My lights are basically upside down. The rest of it looks the same though.

@Ericajoy98 I had to loosen the nut on the light arm and rotate it. Seems like I had to undo a wire and rotate then reconnect it...

Doug, I just bought the model you have and need to mount it horizontally to the soffit like yours. I'm concerned that the camera can't be aimed high enough. I need for it to cover 15ft out to 75ft. The soffit is 9ft off the ground. Does that sound doable?
@DougForce4 ай бұрын
@user- in8jn2os8c I think it is doable - I had to rotate the cameras so I could point them more upward instead of downward - I bet you can do the same.

Hi Doug thanks for vid. But, at 2:32, is your multimeter set for DC voltage instead of AC?
@DougForce Жыл бұрын
@Multi Busy LOL it absolutely is! I ‘think’ that shot was staged for the camera and wasn’t actually checking anything. But it’s possible that I just wasn’t paying attention and set it wrong, would not be the first time! Good catch! Always make sure you set your meter correctly when trying to avoid nose lighting! 😀

Found your video very helpful. We’ve been wanting to mount one like you did but all we kept finding when we searched is that you had to modify the joint for the camera. I was wondering how high up you installed the camera and did you modify the joints at all?
@DougForce4 жыл бұрын
Jordon Brault I meant to mention that Jordon, but it slipped my mind! The unit is setup for wall mounting by default, but it worked fine for ceiling mount by just loosening the nut on the camera and rotating it 180 degrees. The only tool needed was a pair of pliers. Same for the lights - just loosened the nut and rotated. The Ring.com site says the unit is for wall or ceiling mount, but in some documentation is less clear on that point, as you noticed. My install height is about 8.5 feet high - seems to work great so far.

Is this a specific ring for under an eave? Most seem to have vertical installation. 1:35

@user-ep2gg2cd8f No, it’s a regular Ring camera. I took the lights loose and turned them over.

May ask what ring product specifically are you installing in the video? I just spoke to a Ring representative who indicated their floodlight cameras cannot not be installed horizontally such as you are demonstrating. Thank you!
@DougForce2 жыл бұрын
@Ken Brodzinski Yes, it’s the Ring Floodlight Camera that they say can’t be installed this way! I loosened the lights in the fixture , rotated them to point down better from being mounted this way and it has worked fine ever since.
@kenbrodzinski46482 жыл бұрын
@@DougForce did you also have adjust the camera/ motion detector? Thanks!
@DougForce2 жыл бұрын
@Ken Brodzinski Yes, the same way - just repositioned everything to point the correct way. I’ve seen videos where people had to file away some of the mounting to allow a steeper down angle on cameras but my installation didn’t require that much angle. It was pretty simple. As long as you have an overhang to protect from rain intrusion I don’t think you’d have much difficulty.
@kenbrodzinski46482 жыл бұрын
@@DougForce Thanks Doug, very helpful. Appreciate the quick responses.
@DougForce2 жыл бұрын
@Ken Brodzinski Glad to help! Hope you will consider subscribing! One last thing, I did remove a few wire nuts when tweaking the led and camera positions to keep from over twisting the wires, but I don’t think that ended up being necessary and put them back when I was done. The only tool I needed for the mod was a pair of pliers to loosen the nuts initially.
@eddievargas76802 жыл бұрын
Oh wow…so you can install it upside down? My existing floodlight is on the fascia which is angled down. My concern was that the camera wasn’t going to be able to tilt up high enough
@DougForce2 жыл бұрын
@Eddie Vargas Well Ring says you can’t, but I’d seen others do it and it worked fine so I tried it and it’s worked fine. I loosened the leds and the camera and rotated them 90 degrees and retightened which worked fine. If you needed a steeper down angle than that provides, there is a part of the mount that can be filed down to allow steeper positioning. There are videos on KZbin showing that but as mentioned my installation did not require any filing. I’ve been very pleased with my installation.

Oh, actually very good video., Hi, i am buying one for the driveway, i already have the ring doorbell with the snapshot option, yours looks good the snapshots because as you note, the shadows give you a very good perspective of movement, meaning that it actually is doing it, ** on what time setting do you have the snapshots ?? **, doorbell has 1 hour, 14 mins., and 5 mins.
@DougForce4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The Floodlight cam has settings of 3 min, 1 min or 30 seconds. It’s currently set to 3 min. which seems to work fine. I’ve been really pleased with the device.

There seems to be some steps missing before you start... I was wondering, how did you switch the lights to come up with the hoods up? Seem reversed and antoher video said you had to leave that way...
@DougForce3 жыл бұрын
@Alberto Rodriguez Yes, I noted in the description that I loosened the nuts on the lights and camera and rotated them, then retightened before connecting the light to the house, which worked fine. I've heard from some that their wires in the fixture would not allow enough slack to rotate the lights hood up. In that case they had to disconnect the wires, then rotate the lights and then reconnect the wires. You can leave the hoods upside down but I thought it looked better with them up, and rotating the lights was very easy! :)

Hey Doug how are you .? So I got this ring camera as well n my Conection doesn’t have a ground cable just like yours but the instructions specifies the you need to have three cables coming from your circuit one of them the ground that connects to the screw you mention n the cameras ground as well so it’s ok to have not ground coming from the house ? I read that it can be a hazard so I’mnot sure what to do
@DougForce4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jairo, it’s definitely best to have a ground wire. Inside the box I hung the camera from there was a ground wire connected to the metal box itself. When I connected the ground wire from the camera to the ground screw on the mounting plate, that acts as ground through the metal box. Is there a bundle of bare copper wires in the box perhaps? If so you could connect a short jumper wire to that....?
@MARIAREY54 жыл бұрын
Doug Force yes just like yours I have the option to connect the ground coming from the camera to the green screw another question is that my circuit has a red n white cable not black is the red one the Hotwire ?
@DougForce4 жыл бұрын
jairo lorenzo It should be fine to connect the ground wire from the camera to the ground screw on the plate. White wires are supposed to be standardized as neutral so the red wire is probably your hot wire. You could confirm that by using your meter and measuring between the red wire and ground. If you have 120v, red is your hot wire.

How many feet does the camera detect?
@DougForce2 жыл бұрын
@andmore 4T Just checked and the street is 115 feet away, I do not pick up passing cars. On average I get a notification that there is motion in the driveway at about 60 feet.

@andmore 4T Just realized I told you wrong as I had masked out the street from the detection area in the app. When I removed that I do get notifications of traffic in street so the range is at least 115 feet!

Rings never answers their phone in a timely manner.i ordered 4 cameras from Home Depot,and after two days trying to get them to work like they should and four hours on hold ,called five times I’m taking them back for a refund.also I found out lots of other people having same problem
@DougForce3 жыл бұрын
@Steve Conrad Sorry to hear that. I’ve not had any trouble with my Ring devices but I have heard that their support quality went down after Amazon bought them. You might take a look at cameras by a company called Eufy - they are great quality, don’t require a monthly fee like the Ring cameras do and are priced better too. There are lots of reviews on Eufy here on KZbin.
