Hello Nicole, thank you so much for your DIY Shade Sail Video. you have given me a boost of confidence as I was starting to doubt my capacity…. from a technical standpoint, I got a bit confused with the Dinabolts that I had bought and the very clever ones with the hook that you used. I think a trip to Bunnings is required by me because 1. I got the ones without the hook, 2. The way you’ve done it with the ones with the hook, much more sensible and easier. I am still at the putting up the hooks and hardware stage. I was very glad to see somebody EXPLAIN VISUALLY how to use the metal wire and loop making with those tiny bolts and the wire back on itself to make the wire loop. Cutting that wire is really challenging. I will keep going. But thank you for your down to earth approach and advice!

Terrific video! Loved it. You nailed it. I'm a 68yo single female DIYer. You did exactly what I'm wanting to do. There is no way any one from that Hardware Store would have confirmed what I was thinking with such simplicity. Not to mention, make me feel like I know nothing!. Thank you. I have the confidence to erect my shade sale to my brick now. More videos please! ❤

If the anchor to the brick wall doesn't protrude to the inside house framing structure the brick veneer is in risk of side pull in high winds. The eyelet attached to the wooden fence doesn't look solid again in high winds situation. If sail will be removed once there's high winds in forecast i guess this will be ok

I totally understand where you are coming from. We’ve had it up for a year and a half now through many storms that brought down trees and everything is still fine. I am planning on cementing in a metal post the replace where it’s attached to the timber fence though as I don’t think that will hold forever.

Excellent! So glad it was helpful. A few people have mentioned that not all fences will be as strong as mine so keep in mind that you may need some reinforcement in the form of a cemented in post of your fences are slightly weak. Mine have all been completely fine and held up through many crazy wind storms that have brought down trees in the last few years.

That fence paling will pull away from your boundary with high winds. The palings are nailed on and you have a high torque screwbolt through the paling which will also split. You need better fixing points on that side. 🙏

I'm setting up my own shade cloth but I was told by Bunnings staff that I shouldn't attach one to my timer fence as the standard depth of the timber fence in the ground is not enough to hold against the wind pulling on the shade sail. Have you had any issues with your timber fence since installation?
@NicoleHerrickDIY
@NicoleHerrickDIY Жыл бұрын
I haven’t had any issues but it does depend on the strength of your fence and how many sides you’re attaching. We’ve had super high winds that have brought down trees in the street many times over the last 2 years and the timber fence hasn’t moved and the shade sail hasn’t come off at all. I’ve only got it in 1 point on the fence though.

With a good wind this is asking for trouble, this I hope is taken down when not in use, the anchor points you have made are not strong enough.
@NicoleHerrickDIY
@NicoleHerrickDIY 3 жыл бұрын
It’s been up for 6 months in plenty of large wind storms. No signs of any weakness in any of the anchor points.

@@NicoleHerrickDIY like I said "a good wind" it will happen, do not mistaken luck for anything else, the 2:00 anchor and any anchor in a slat of wood 1/2 thick will fail. If these were put in 4x4 posts you would last, but what would I know, been studying structural engineering for 25 years

Is it waterproof? Is the area under it covered from the rain?
@NicoleHerrickDIY
@NicoleHerrickDIY 3 жыл бұрын
The furniture is all waterproof. The shade sail does keep most of the rain off but they still get wet from it coming in sideways. No water leaks through the shade sail itself that I have seen. It is mesh though so you have to make sure you have one side higher that the other 2 so that water doesn’t pool in the middle as then it would eventually leak through.

Is the same sale still up? Attaching to the fence, especially the wood fence will most definitely fail in the 1st high wind or over time as fence palings are only thin light wood. Founder sinking would only make it even worse. The color bond fence may also start to lean in and this could become costly in repairs. Great effort but if you don't know what your doing it's better and less expensive in the long run to get a proper trades person. I would be worried if I was your neighbour.

@@NicoleHerrickDIY you must be a very lucky person. What worries me is people may unknowingly copy this and it results in damage to their property and or person. From memory you have no disclaimer on your video. From a mechanical engineering point both of your fences are not designed to support this than this will mostly cause damage to definitely the wood and possibly the colour bond fence in time There is a reason you are supposed to use 90x90 x 3.5mm thick steel or 125mm tested timber posts to support sails. Yours might be fine for the moment in your circumstance but think about the possibility of the people copying your video who are not. It is irresponsible to not research to safety factors involved in installing shade sales. I'm only saying this to help protect you against possibly being liable for providing incorrect advice. Please do not take this the wrong way but you are arguing against engineering facts that are well documented. I'm only trying to help you avoid a costly mistake.
