Professional awning installer here. It is important to locate your brackets on studs closest to where the arms attach to the mounting bar. The arms want to twist that bar when the awning is out and mounting close the arms will prevent undue twisting. On the right side of his awning, those brackets are too far from the arm.

I install about 200 a year in new England, this is the first video I've ever seen that the installer can't find studs with a studfinder! Probing is the only way. the bracket placement wasn't ideal but sometimes the studs just aren't where you want them. Good how to video overall!

Sorry guys. I would never mount an awning straight to the vinyl siding. Gust of wind or just windy conditions and those brackets are going to work their way through the vinyl resulting in splitting of the siding and loose lag bolts. I would put up a 2x6 or 2x8 header first and then mount the brackets to it. I would remove the siding where the header goes first and then mount the board directly to the wall and studs, replacing the siding around it afterwards with a drip flashing on top and caulk it up. A lot more work, but very secure. Still like you videos...just my opinion on this one. Just saw reviews on another quicker option I haven’t tried....a product called “Siding Savers”. You can Google or see it on KZbin. Says it can be used to mount a deck facia to vinyl so this may be a whole lot safer and simpler.

That was going to be my first question...how do you keep the brackets from mashing the siding flat and screwing up the looks and the performance of the siding itself? Thanks for the solution

Best to use aluminum sleeve spacers behind the brackets that go through the wall and sit at the surface of the stud. This will keep the brackets slightly off the vinyl and not crush it. I bet if it's breezy and the awning is moving you can hear the brackets rubbing on the vinyl from inside the house.

What dose the siding do when you mount a flat bracket to it?
@billbrown13804 жыл бұрын
The siding actually "flattened" as it was tightened. The brackets do have notches to accommodate for the siding, but not the best
@darrenjamesgaspe86824 жыл бұрын
I install awnings for a living and I can say that the best method is to make a notch in the vinyl siding where it has a bend and place a 1/2 or 3/4 inch block of wood to prevent buckling or compression of the vinyl siding. You then leg bolt the bracket thru the wood blocks into the studs. Cheers.
@ethananderson072 жыл бұрын
@@darrenjamesgaspe8682 When you say you notch at the bend, do you mean where it protrudes a bit for the butt? Or do you notch the spot for the entire bracket? Then you the block of wood you add would fit in the notch the full length of the bracket? Then silicon around the block to the siding>
