How to Install a Toyota 4Runner OEM Rear Sliding Cargo Tray

This week we walk through the steps on how to install the Toyota 4Runner OEM Rear Sliding Cargo Tray.
We have a lot of working coming up on our 5th Gen Toyota 4Runner and this Rear Sliding Cargo Tray will actually be one that is coming out of the 4Runner in order to make room for new things. Since there really isn't a lot out there on how to install/remove these trays, we decided it would be a good time to show how easy it is and the benefit to having one. It has certainly served us well for the last 3 years.

We have learned through many of our viewers that the dealers are unable to get these at all now. We can't say that this is the case for all but so far, I haven't heard of one that can. This is a huge change from when we first made this and the parts department locally here in OH, said they could order it.

OK so I'm not crazy. I've been looking for an OEM slide out tray all over eBay and Toyota dealer websites. No luck with that or with calling dealerships.

@@n00206 Definitely not crazy. I was shocked because the last time I asked about them, the dealer I stopped in to see, didn't mention they weren't available. I'm bummed as I know quite a few want it.

Great and informative video, thanks for making it! I'm on the cusp of getting a 2023 TRD Off Road Premium, and all the ones listed here in SoCal as of February 4, 2023 come with this tray. Would be useful for us older folks. One question: any idea how much floor-to-headliner distance does one lose with this unit installed?

For this cargo tray, we no longer have it. This was made just before we took it out to sell. We made the episode because there was zero out there on it. From other viewers that have commented, it sounds like this is incredibly difficult to get from the dealer so I'm not sure if you will have any luck on getting a new one. It worked great for us until we decided to upgrade to a full storage solution and it needed to go then.

After this episode, we did learn that Toyota was no longer selling them. Only recently have I been told that it's now a possible option for 2023 TRD Pro's. Pretty unfortunate considering the interest in them.

Hi Richey Rich, we're learning that no one can get them, which is shocking. This was installed already when I purchased the 4Runner. I did check at one point with a local dealer here because I was curious on how much they were and could be purchased, which they were at that time. any idea what is the total weight of the retractable cover including the subframe and what is the dimension?

Hi Saleem. Thank you for watching and asking. We appreciate it. I would guess it's likely around 15-20lbs. Easily a 1 person carry. The exact dimensions I don't have but it covers the entire rear from the back of the seats to roughly 2-3inches from the tailgate when closed. Hope that helps.

Hi Noctilucent. Thank you for watching and asking. We greatly appreciate it. It's a great question. The Premium's may be able to. I'm pretty certain the Trail and Pro's can. I was told that not all can though but those that do already have the mounting holes there from the factory. If you can easily access the carpet, it's a quick job as you can tell to pull it up to see if you have them. Or I would call the Toyota dealer parts department with your VIN to see if you can. For a snorkel, in my opinion, there are a number of factors that would weigh whether to get one or not. 1: Are you even going to be crossing water features where it would be helpful/required. 2: Are you keeping the vehicle for a long time and not afraid of it impacting the sale of it. For us, it came with the 4Runner as we bought it used but we have crossed some deeper water features where the water has come up over the hood so having one certainly gave me more confidence but also less concern of issues. Great install instructions. HOWEVER, I live in Florida and have tried five in state dealers, one in Road Island, one in Massachusetts, and finally San Francisco. Great install video, but worthless if you cannot get the parts! Why put on the video if all comments say parts are not available?

This video is missing the most crucial part. The drilling of the holes for the mounting bolts. So it’s not as easy as it sounds. Anything that requires drilling/cutting into the sheet metal is a no go for me.
