Love that you are making this type of video mate. Teaching how to do stuff right is important. DIY is going to happen, as you say here, it's legal to do minor stuff like this, but even if it was illegal... it'd still happen. I'd prefer the DIYer knew the pitfalls rather than not. Good post on a simple DIY trick. Some people might say DIYers should not be doing this. All of us live with electricity teaching someone about electricity is essential so they can detect what is safe and what is not and when they can do something themselves safely and correctly compared to when they need to call a professional electrician in. Nice job very clearly explained for those that may not know.

What's your opinion of these permanently wired USB sockets? I feel like any active electronics should be easy and quick to isolate so I prefer stuff that plugs in or has it's own dedicated circuit. Also electronics standards change every few years, so I wouldn't be surprised if the standards soon will just be U to C rather than A to C, and perhaps a completely new standard will come out soon, and that's much easier with pluggable chargers. As for running out of sockets, my solution is chargers with 5 USB ports on each.

One issue I've had with these is that some of the USB sockets go a little further back into the wall box than the non-usb ones and this can cause a problem with older/ crapper wall boxes, so I have to get creative with mounting surrounds (not sure of the exact term) and longer screws and so on. Love them though. Total game-changer!!

Great video and my comment is not aimed specifically at you but anyone who fits these sockets. We are told to unplug phone chargers when not being used (as they still use a micro amount of power), because with umpteen thousands of chargers left in this is an unneccessary electrical load and waste energy. So how do these continuously connected sockets get passed. Why are they not switched by the socket switch, which would also help when meggering circuits at fusebox.

Nice demonstration Jordan. I think others have mentioned that while these MK USB sockets claim on the packet to fit in a 25mm back box, a 35mm is far more preferable. I would also have mentioned for the DIY-er to to keep the neutral and CPC conductors away from each other while working - as they will crap themselves if they touch and the RCD trips switching off half the house. Oh BTW did I see the outer cable sheaths disappear out through the grommet and into the wall void when you pushed that new socket into place?

Indeed.... we always fit a 35mm box if USB is specified. if the customer is umming and ahhing about where they want usb vs normal, it all gets 35mm. The cost difference is cheaper than the time trying to jam a USB into a 25mm box lol

The only way the inner conductors are going to chafe through the rubber grommet and cause a short is if there were multiple 9 (Moment Magnitude scale) earthquakes. There would be no house left standing. Yes it is nice to see a grommet there (a very rare sight indeed) but if the outer sheath ends up in the wall I would not worry for a moment.

Jordon, can you tell me why it is the where there are two conductors coming into the same point in a socket, that they are not twisted together. Which is standard practice here in New Zealand. As we feel it makes for much better mechanical security and improved conductivity. Is there a section in your reg's about it?
@stephenwilshaw3052
@stephenwilshaw3052 4 жыл бұрын
Not twisting makes testing much easier if you need to separate parts of a circuit to nail down a fault. They never twist back together as well the second time around. I agree though, properly twisted conductors make a mechanically sounder joint with much less chance of a lone conductor coming out.

Great detail there, we are all told to unplug the wall plug type chargers when not in use because of their quiescent current consumption, I am sure I read somewhere that the MK brand USBs have a zero quiescent current when unloaded, however, cheaper brands may consume power even when not in use.

I'm in two minds on this video Jordan. We all constantly cringe when we come across DIY bodges - and this video just opens up a can of worms IMHO. What if the t&e is disturbed against a backbox with no grommet? What if one conductor of the ring isn't secured correctly so it breaks. What if the CPC isn't reconnected properly? What if another member on the household reenergises that circuit whilst it's being worked on? What if it's a 25mm backbox so they just stick the USB socket in with longer pattress screws and leave a finger-sized gap? What if someone gets injured and/or killed and it transpires they watched your video prior to doing this? To us mate, it's just changing a socket. To the family of someone who attempts this, it could be changing their lives. Food for thought?

Seriously, I (and a lot of friends, family, ...) have changed a lot of switch or plugs in my life and never been an electrician. You don't need to be one for this and a lot of people are and have been actually doing it. Having a video that explains how to securely do it is therefore better. People that have never intended to do jobs like this would never do it (because they are afraid or don't want to bother to spend time doing it) and people that intended to do it would have done it with or without the video.

It's slightly silly to say a homeowner cant change a light fitting or add a socket if they can change a socket on a ring. Rings are dangerous to let someone incompetent play with. If you get it wrong and connect a leg badly the resulting radial will be overloaded and you won't know - it will still work. Part P says a home owner can do most things not in the bathroom, adding a circuit to a CU or changing a CU. They just need to protect from fire and injury. A home owner doesn't need to issue a minor works certificate to change a light fitting. That's just silly. You criticise all the other electricians work anyway - saying it's dangerous or 'not great'. So why bother employing one. Also your own circuit labels have the potential to cause injury as you didn't update them.

The only thing I’d point out is to not buy any usb socket as some have deeper internals than others. If it’s a standard 25mm galv back box, the new usb socket needs to have slimline internals or match the depth of the socket been removed. For usb sockets with deeper internals, the galv back box would need to be replaced with a 35mm one and this could involve much more work as in some instances the wall would have to be chased deeper.

Italy here. My apartment had literally every single color you can think of. Brown, blue, black, grey, red, white, and transparent gold - mostly transparent gold, which I gather is the original '55 cabling. *All* of them used interchangeably and some wires started one color and ended up another at their destination with no junction boxes inbetween. It's been an absolute nightmare to work out what goes where. Charred cables and burnt junctions were in literally every single junction box. Knowing that this is likely more or less the situation for all old buildings it's a damn miracle that there aren't fires everywhere all the time, and I'm pretty sure it's just down to the fact that we don't do wooden walls. So far I've replaced all the wiring, but the road to a decent electrical system is gonna be _long._ The original '55 system had all the rooms daisy chained together and there is only one breaker that turns off everything, and the conduits aren't large enough to fit any more cables (they're 12mm diameter) so I'm having to tear open all of the (brick) walls to put new conduits in, which is an absolute pain (I know they make external ducts but I hate them, they're unsightly). Also while I'm doing all this I figured I might as well set up a three phase system and get a three phase feed in the future for bragging rights, but I've found the building's main bus only carries two phases and a neutral, despite the fact that all of the boxes in the stairwell are fitted with stuff that was clearly designed to support 3 phases + neutral. The third phase only makes it from the main feed to the first box in the basement and then dies there. I'm not sure if that can be solved without spending God knows how much. Oh, right, I found this out because I was looking for a main earth bus. As far as I can work out, there isn't one. (edit: I found the earth! It was inside the telephone distribution box. _Obviously._ )

@@TheChipmunk2008 Eh, it is what it is. On the other hand though, newer ('80s onwards) installations are significantly easier to work on than what you have in the UK, since everything is in conduits - none of that "cable clipped to studs behind the drywall" nonsense. Also there are some things in the UK I find astounding, like the lack of a main isolator on your meters - ours had isolator buttons even in ancient times... also stuff like the tails coming from the meter just running around unprotected all over the place including under the kitchen sink which here would be unthinkable. Basically the system I had here turned to crap because of 70 years of neglect and shoddy bodges, but back in the day, when it was new, it would have been _way_ safer than a lot of the stuff I've seen on this channel, though not as functional/convenient (there was only one socket per room, near the light switch).

On most units available, the USB switch-mode- power supply is permanently on, not good! Also be aware that these units can be responsible for injecting noise onto the power line, especially some of the cheaper imported units which don't always have RFI filtering on the input.

Is this going to encourage people to DIY who would normally get an electrician in? No. The people who are likely to DIY will do it regardless but at least videos like this might get them thinking a bit more about safety 👍 Also, many homeowners struggle to find anyone for small jobs...and this is a very small job! (I suppose they might get lucky and find someone starting out or doing work next door or someone hoping it'll lead to more work etc) Homeowners would, depending on how it's priced (Cambridge rates?! 😜) think it's disproportionately expensive to get a spark in for a £15 accessory swap.

I'm not an electrician, but my advice for someone who doesn't necessarily know what they're doing would be to just turn off everything. Here we have a main isolator integrated in the power meter, not sure if it's the same in the UK. Unless there's some power stealing fuckery going on (in which case you'd hopefully at least know) if you turn that off you can be 100% sure that everything's dead.

I don't think I ever want one of these USB sockets in my wall. I've seen USB chargers misbehave too much, everything up to letting the magic smoke out in one case. I just doesn't feel right to have something like that permanently connected to the mains. Plus too many things now need something special like Qualcomm quick charge or USB Power Delivery.

These USB outlets are handy, I have one in my kitchen. I would be cautious about cheap off brand outlets that you see as they can have poor quality USB power supplies which are prone to failure. Given that the USB outlets are live 24/7, if they develop a fault they could be merrily overheating and cooking away inside the wall; there's no way to isolate them without shutting off the whole ring final circuit!😕 Stick to quality brands and avoid the cheap Chinese stuff.
