On my former R1250RT to change the air filter was a pain in the ass, but man, this is another level 🤣🤣🤣

Not that I couldn't do it, with good instruction and the service manual. But, nah... I think I'll splurge on this one and support my local shop!

I couldn't agree with you more. If I have to pay $500 every couple years to have it done , its well worth it.

@Miskini-tj6ec I get why people want to try it themselves and save money... I just dropped my bike off at the dealership yesterday to have the drive bolt recall done. While they were going to be in there anyway, I asked if they could also do an air filter change. They said it would add an additional 307 bucks, just to add that. 45 mins in (from where they will already be) and 45 mins out. WTH... Reluctantly, I said no thanks. But I only have 7,500 miles on mine. I'll wait and have my local (non dealer) shop do it in another five to ten thousand miles. That's way too much, especially for already being that deep in. Crazy...

Nice video for many who hasn't done one. I really recommend to get the service manual which will show you simply, step by step how too. If you take your time and use a tray to separate all hardware and believe me, you will thank me, this should be pretty easy to do. I did mine at 20K and the filter was like out of the box. All depends where you ride. Next one, I will wait 25K or longer. This job will take few hours to complete. If you have no hardware left, when done, you did good.

That's classic! I've taken bikes to the dealership for maintenance and have noticed some fasteners missing or broken. If you want something done right, do it yourself!

The $400 air filter change. Gold Wings are awesome bikes, but this and 24 valves to fiddle with puts me off a bit. The Kawasaki Vulcan Voyager with hydraulic valves so no adjustment needed ever, and the air filter is out in the open and can be changed in minutes.

Really not that bad of a job, like others have said do it on a cold day, I did it in the winter when I wasn't riding. I liked taking it apart to see what was what, ended up just working my way down to the airbox and changed the filter since I was in there. If that turns out to be the biggest dealer-performed maintenance item, so be it, not that much maintenance to do in three years of ownership. Besides, there are a few shops around the country that work on Goldwings and might end up being a nice ride to get there.

I appreciate you showing us this video. The Goldwing is an excellent machine, but going through all of this doesn't make any sense from the owners point of view. This is a major design flaw. As stated by a previous comment, the air filter could've been put in a much easier place to access.

+1 Absolutely ridiculous to practically have to disassemble the whole top of the bike to change an air filter. Love the GW but my opinion of Honda engineers just dropped several notches. Especially considering an air filter change on my Yamaha V-twin was four bolts and a cover, about five minutes tops.

Dang. Doable, but my BMW air filter is a snap in comparison. My HD is too easy. That said, the GW is still an awesome bike, every bike has some kind of pain in the ass.

I hear ya. I have a HD Road Glide and it’s a piece of cake to change the filter. 2 screws and change the filter. I am having second thoughts on a Goldwing now.

on the flip side, All the other maintenance is a breeze. You can change the rear tire in 5 minutes, coolant changes are simple and oil changes are cake. All bikes have certain things that are pains

It does not look like fun, but not terrible. You have to do just about the same on a BMW K1200LT, and add the fuel tank to the list of items to take off. After you do it enough it goes pretty fast. Certainly nothing that will keep me from buying the bike.

Notice the video only shows taking it apart. No organizing the parts taken off which is important. If you do not video, lable, organize and know precisely where things are put back together you are going to have big problems. Anyone can take this bike apart, but getting it back together without damaging the bike is where the real skill is. The problem with taking this bike to the shop is you don't really know what the bike mechanic actually did to get to the air filter and you don't know how it was put back together. So you almost have to do this yourself unless you have a mechanic you really, really trust. So I would suggest watching a number of these videos before you even attempt this. By the way the bike in this video seems very dirty and scratched up for a 2023 and the filter shouldn't be that dirty. I would be curious were this bike is ridden. Anyway, the better you organize each part, push pins screws and wires the easier it will be to get it back together. Take your time.

Well, very interesting and it convinces me to not buy a Goldwing. I don't understand why the folks who designed the bike could not have made air filter replacement and other maintenance items far less complicated. Clearly designed to make $$$ in dealership service departments, just like our car companies.
@canadiankrispybacon
@canadiankrispybacon Ай бұрын
Agreed, air filter replacement should be one of the easiest things an owner should be able to do….and if you put the miles on, this would be min once a year if not quite easily twice. This imho is on purpose. I mean, can you imagine going in for an oil change, and say hey..just change the AF as well….you’d be coming out of the dealer no less than $600-$700 lighter in you pocket 😱

She seems a lil’ rough for a 202 🤔 No doubt these Gold Wings are a nice riding bike..but holy smokes….$300 in labour to change a $20-$30 air filter 😳
@alfonsodennis8450
@alfonsodennis8450 Ай бұрын
It’s only required to be changed every 32000 miles, so if you put on 10,000 a year every 3 years to do all of this. Take the bike to a Honda Dealership, most will keep your bike for while and say it’s done without doing anything. Who going to go behind them to make sure the work was done.

32,000 🤔 Honda GW owners manual shows an R at 16,000 miles! You take it to 32k and there is an issue..good luck with the warranty…These manufacturers are looking for any reason to void warranties. Besides…there is just now way replacing an air filter should require 2-3hrs of labor …you’d think these engineers would’ve/could’ve come up with an easier, more accessible location for simple AF change 🤔
