For the clip mount, depending on the amount of freedom the clip has, you may be able to set the cooler down flat, guide the plain end of the clip onto the tab, and then press the other side down - use a wooden stick rather than a screwdriver, if you have to press it with something. For team blue, the standard fitting is intel push pins. The cam heads should be set in a clockwise position for insertion. Set the heatsink in place (don't forget the paste) and jiggle gently to be sure the pins are catching the holes. Press them, down following a diagonal pattern and they will click and lock. To release, turn the cam heads 90 degrees anticlockwise (fingers or flat blade screwdriver in the slot) and then pull up. Return them to clockwise position for re-install. Other coolers may supply their own backplate, using either a bolt through or a backplate and stud system. The Contac Silent 12, for Intel uses the "Chinese ring", more often seen on obscure Chinese coolers, where 2 part push pins are used (press the outer part through, then press the inner part in to lock, pull inner part out to unlock) to match the AMD style clip. Not sure if I'm disappointed or reassured to see a known brand using this mounting ring instead of a backplate or fixing wings with push pins. NB. Some coolers may have 3 (or more) mounting options, with parts that have multiple holes, or are fitted with a kink inward for one option and outward for another, or with sliding fittings to adjust (eg. LGA775, LGA115x, LGA1366)

Excellent Primer, Mike! This can be a bit daunting for a new builder. I still remember putting a screwdriver through some traces on a motherboard when installing a clip-based CPU cooler. Luckily, I just popped into the local electronics shop, and they had a conductive pen that I used to correct my mistake. Amazing invention... saved my butt.

thanks for the terrific video. i'm here because i've damaged a board and a processor in the past ($$$$$$) and it is helpful to mentally prepare and see you go through the motions a few times on the am4 socket before i toss in my x570 + 3700x + liquid cooler. i've done cpu/cooler installs about 20x now (+a dozen more cooler swaps) , but haven't had an AMD in over 10 years. it is so nice to see pins on a cpu again.

Mike! Over the next month or so when the new AM4 boards eventually arrive & the prices are no longer silly I will be going ahead with my Ryzen 5 3600 build. I already have one of those thermaltake coolers & I might insert a Ryzen 5 shaped 0.3mm copper plate between the CPU & cooler so that the total surface contact area of the Ryzen has full contact with the copper allowing the heat to flow more directly to the pipes. The reason for this is because the only area of heat conduction are the 4 pipes with the rest of the area being the aluminium of the attachment block, when ideally the whole area of heat pipe conduction should cover the area of the CPU which is what you see on some of the more expensive tower coolers when the contact area is all copper. What do you think?
@mikesunboxing
@mikesunboxing 4 жыл бұрын
seems like a good idea and the theory is sound. I'll be interested to see if it makes much real world difference though, let me know how it goes
@britexitengineer1407
@britexitengineer1407 4 жыл бұрын
If you review the tomahawk X570 when it is eventually available, use the thermaltake cooler on it & we can devise a benchmark & compare results to see if it makes any difference? Even if it only makes 1C difference it still gets rid of the heat more evenly from the full surface of the CPU instead of 4 stripes of contact with the copper.

Hey Mike, great vids! I just built my first p.c. last night and the cooler was giving me a hard time wanting to not just cooperate, lol but I got it, the springs didn't help, also do you know what I should look up for installing windows if it keeps saying not enough room on partition, and I can't delete the 116 mbps file or format and it gets 5% or so then stops downloading and gives me error code 0:8007025D ANY help would be greatly appreciated my friend. Oh and I tried changing boot preference to uefi 8gb flash drive, and tried to delete partition through the black screens but nothing yet

Hi Mike do you think you would see much of a temperature drop using the article freezer compared to stock cooler. I built a cheap pc about 2 months ago using MSI b450 gaming max plus and ryzen 5 2600 and Corsair vengeance lpx 3200 16gb. Seems to work well. CPU temp goes up to 59°C during hot weather. When it's not doing much 45°C. I was thinking about taking stock cooler off and using mx4 and taking it from there. Good video by the way and I watched most of your RGB video last night...

With a Ryzen 5600X I've been getting between 60 and 75c in games, do you consider that normal temperature? Cinebench multicore stays only at 65c though. I'm using 32gb 3600Mhz ram and bios is on stock setttings, just DCOP was set to enabled. I'm worried if the Corsair H100x I'm using is making enough pressure in the CPU, as the temperatures aren't changing much when I set the coolers to run at max speed. I applied CM mastergel paste over the whole CPU surface.
@mikesunboxing

sounds a little high to be honest maybe the mounting pressure is slightly off?
@gamblerfls
@gamblerfls 3 жыл бұрын
@@mikesunboxing I don't think I mounted it badly, as I could feel the pump contact with the processor+paste and the two screws bent when tightening. But I noticed that multiple cores go up to 4650mhz when playing games, while they stay at 4100~4200mhz on Cinebench. Vcore goes up to 1.42. I wonder if it's running overclocked because of the 3600mhz ram sticks, even though auto-OC isn't enabled in the bios, just DCOP.

Is it just me or do quite a few cooler companies ship their products without documentation on installation? this arctic cooler I am attaching for my friend has these 2 tiny metal retention brackets - but they aren't a spring device - they screw in. Maybe my friend threw it away or something, but I can't even seem to find documentation of how those retention clips are supposed to work - which direction they face, for instance. It seems the screws they mount with are too long and will not allow the clips to slide over the little nub.... I never imagined the worst part of the entire process, helping him build this computer, would be putting a dinky arctic cooling fan on it.... this has been unbelievably frustrating - no fault of your video, of course. I'm just venting because it's a bit ridiculous if it 's standard to not include at least a little diagram of the facing and assembly of the small part... maybe he threw it away after all. I could swear, years and years ago when I built my previous computer, they actually did ship instructions, and you could find instructions on the mechanism online... ...off topic, but you do any google searches lately? It seems like it's designed to give me advertisements and sell me things more than look up information in a database. I find 10 results of total BS before I find any instructions that even remotely resemble anything I searched for. WTF is going on with this commie nonsense at google lately... I guess they just can't get over that censorship bug... I can't imagine there's any other reason for being wholly unable to find the results I used to search out with ease... I never imagined I would face this much frustration JUST DOING AN INTERNET SEARCH FOR MY SOLUTION. After several searches with very few actual relevant results, one begins to get very frustrated that a search engine is seemingly unable to search for what is among the most basic of information on building a PC..... it wasn't this way even a year ago... at least I didn't notice it. That's how I happened upon this video, actually - but this video doesn't actually solve my problem because it doesn't seem like many still even use this method.. at least not on the internet...
