TIPS: - Use a brass drift punch when trying to seperate things that hold bearings. Smacking theing hold bearings like the uni's will pit or flaten races/rollers/bearings leading to early failure, while at it, those welding, ensure current path never goes through bearings, they arc and die very fast afterwards. - When tapping, just like shagging, don't go in dry. As you are not pulling the pinion seals, the cast iron powder/chips will end up in there. Grease the tap to hold onto the debre.

Another great video! Just a quick note, open diffs actually distribute torque 50:50 all the time, and it's not until the diff is locked can you distribute the torque differently from one side to the other. An axle doesn't have to be moving to experience torque. Just like a nut that's tight and you're still pulling on the spanner is experiencing a torque but not moving.
@spencerm106
@spencerm106 Жыл бұрын
Ditto, I was about to make a comment along these lines. They split torque 50/50, when one wheel has limited traction (i.e. raised off ground) the opposite wheel will see the same torque which won't be enough to get it moving. Learning advanced driving techniques like left for braking can assist with this. Not a locker, but can help get traction in difficult terrain with open diffs.

I'd recommend the auto lockers. Always engaged when you need it, and disengaged when you don't. Backlash setup is important to get them to engage and disengaged properly though.

@@Robert-cu9bm Yeah absolutely. I installed mine myself and it was very easy. People complain of the clicking too and I don't even hear it unless I am really trying to listen for it. It does make the steering a little heavy so if I was driving where I would use 4wd a lot and had the extra money I would choose an air locker.

Still running air in the front but will be switching out to an e locker shortly. I find with the air system there are a lot more failure points. Really interested in this and well done on the quality of the video. So much to be impressed with here across the filming, sound, content and process plus editing. I have a part-time 4WD that has a LSD in the rear and an open diff in the front. I thought you’d be upping the rear to a locker but with a LSD (if it’s properly working) I can really see the benefit of upgrading the front, which is typically an open diff, into a locker. The choice of whether to make the upgrade ‘e’ or ‘air’ is likely down to other aspects and I can see your reasons; if you need to air up (as you do) and air is a not too difficult and ultimately reliable vehicle mod then it makes sense to go ‘air’. I can also see the benefit of adding a front locker for those tricky times when you’re likely to lose traction and / or lift a wheel. Thanks for making and continuing to be honest vehicle guys.

Cool video mate, love the content, I have a 2001 Pajero which has a centre diff lock as standard, I think this makes it a Three Wheel Drive. It’s a pretty capable vehicle off-road. If I was to add a locker to the front, I think it would be amazing
@simonmorey257
@simonmorey257 Жыл бұрын
Nah still 2wd. The lockable centre diff allows your Paj to be AWD when unlocked, but when locked it's exactly the same as any part-time 4WD. Think if it this way. The locked diff sends 50% torque to the front diff amd 50% to the rear (in reality it's probably 40/60 but for this example we'll say 50/50). The 50% going to the front diff is split again between each wheel, until such time as either of the wheels is lifted. Without a locker, LSD or traction control, 100% of the front diff torque is applied to the lifted wheel and zero to the wheel still on the ground. All you have left is the power directed to the rear diff. If that diff is also open, you'll need grip at both wheels to maintain motive traction. Unfortunately when one front wheel lifts, it usually unweights the opposite rear corner enough to lose grip and then you are spinning at two corners and going nowhere. A single locker at either end ensures you always have power to at least one grounded wheel, but twin lockers (not counting your centre diff) is better. 👍🏻

80/105 series have a LSD for about 5 minutes after the leave the stealership as a new vehicle . That is about how long the LSD lasts :) (I own a HZJ105) When you install a locker just ensure it is done by someone who knows to setup diffs especially backlash with a least solid pinion spacer in the front. I have seen some disasters in the bush caused by poorly setup difflocks ... The solid front pinion spacer will make the diff as strong as possible, especially the weak front locker ... I do use ARB lockers but if I was doing it again I would use the prolocker for the reasons you said...

FYI, Putting load on the pinion like you did, and then spinning the pinion is no different to spinning the pinion with no load. You are just making the pinion harder to turn & there is no additionalload on the crown wheel. You need to put the drag on the crown wheel and spin the pinion to create extra load.
@einfelder8262
@einfelder8262 Жыл бұрын
I had a chuckle at that too. But the amount of load they could have put on the crown wheel wouldn't come within a bee's d*ck of real life load so in the end the result is the same.

How true is this, well said, although it would because it needs 2 lockers. If anyone wants to know what is the best 4x4 is and who have one of those mates who will crap on saying that GWM and other Chinese 4x4s are good for price. Well this was proven to be incorrect as when we undertook Intel gathering to prove to an insurance company, two hire companies about to buy a heap of Chinese 4x4s to be hired out for remote outback trips AND a well known 4x4 mag (who all of a sudden is saying that the Chinese are now making good 4x4) that ALL the Chinese brands are NOT manufactured to be used in Australia's harse conditions and to prove this, one must head to the wreckers where all our Aussie main off road outback tracks start and finish from. There you'll see what 4x4s are good and what are simply crap. Last check, one wreckers held a number of GWM and LDV vehicles and as of last weekend, there is now several Tank 300s. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THESE BEING HELD AND REPAIRED HAD LESS THAN 40,000KMS!!! There are also a number of several other dual cabs (from all brands, but one more than the others) although not a single solid axle 4x4. Give it another 12 months, the GWM and LDV vehicles with or without dual lockers will have their own holding yards...watch this space.😅

Cos definitely something different 😂😂😂 Both front and rear diffs being open and relying on the "intriquet" traction control to control wheel spin, was not good enough for practicality, with future travel ideas in mind. Your video had really helped in guiding me towards what kind of Locker I should look at getting. However, I may be paying the professionals to do it. So that it's done right the first time 😂.

Hey guys, great ep - realistic! Wanted to get the Pro Locker myself, but at the time they were unavailable, so went ARB. The "issue" with the seals hasn't been a drama for me thus far, but alot harder to push the bearings on - have to push the bearing over the air seal - need to make special jig - so should consider this this before trying at home with ARB. I also added a reg to make sure the air supply did not exceed the locker spec, so not to push the seals. From memory the locker was rated to 120psi?? and my compressor cut out at 150, so set reg to 110. Something guys might want to think about. I would add should check backlash in x3 spots, and while everything apart take advantage of of cleaning and regreasing front end. If doing it for the 1st time the idea of the "dry test fit" is great. I'll admit I learnt this lesson the hard way the 1st time I did a locker, had a hard time getting the copper line from locker through diff housing. Love the injinuity with the work bench.

e-lockers get more hate than they deserve. they can be quite reiable. air lines cant be kinked as hard as wires so they will hang away on corners a bit and allow a gap for sticks to poke in a damage them. repairing wires is also easier track side. there are no seals and o-rings in an e-locker and no compressor so far less things to fail over all. unless you are goin to be thrashing your rig or treating it like a comp truck, e is the way imo. but to each their own. having them in the front is great and safer. have done both but i much prefered the front over all and is made a hell of a difference on hill climbs. why is your diff oil black?!?! and what are you doing with the rag on the pinion ?? 🤣 that wouldnt have done anything to simulate load. you need to put load on the ring gear and turn the pinion lol.

I reckon I've heard stories about air lockers getting a leak inside the diff housing and then foaming all the diff oil up too, potentially spitting it out the diff breather etc. That's not going to happen with an e-locker.

The torque isn't being sent to only one wheel. With an open differential Torque is evenly applied to both front wheels. It's just whatever amount of torque is needed to spin the free wheel, that amount is being sent to the wheel on the ground.

@@AussieArvos that's why i would have put 1 in the rear first you would use it more as there are not many situations you would not be able to do with a rear locked 80 series. Just my opinion from owning 1 for 15 years and 35 years in general 4wdriving.

Unfortunately TJM has discontinued the Air Pro Locker due to inability to source parts :\ TJM is only offering E-lockers... Now its a decision between ARB, Haroop e locker, and auto lockers. For me in a hilux n70 im considering a Harrop E locker up front and a True Trac (helical LSD) in the rear, Or both E lockers front/rear. Still uncertain about ARB due to seal failures and i've been unfortunate to have their products fail on me before, so thats my bias... If anyone has experience with a True Trac + a front locker of some kind i'd love to hear about it
