I just did this a few hours ago. You have to remove the barrel nut to replace the dust cover. Removal was easy, seems like it was torqued down to 35 foot pounds, no shims. Took out the dust cover and replaced it with what I had and reinstalled the barrel nut, torqued it to around 50 foot pounds and continued to reassemble. The problem I came across or something that needed to be pointed out in this video is that the gas tube slides right in and the barrel nut doesn't have to oriented for it, there is plenty of clearance. The important part of the barrel install is that the ridges or slots going front to back have to be in alignment with the gas tube because if it's the handguard tightening lugs WILL get caught up on the barrel nut and will not tighten up properly causing damage to the barrel nut. The barrel nut has grooves specific for these handguard lugs and have to be in the proper orientation for everything to line up. I redid everything and saw why it was torqued down to the minimal 35 foot pounds, it lined right up. The shims are necessary if you want to torque down the barrel nut to more than 35 foot pounds. I might order some because 35 is just to little for me.

Radial movement of the gas tube in the front of the upper receiver is normal. The OD of the gas tube and the ID of the "cloverleaf" hole in the front of the upper receiver allows movement of the tube to align with the gas key of the carrier. In just about every case, one of the set screw holes will line up with the gas port. Is it OK to just butt the gas block onto the barrel shoulder like what you did? My experience with Aero gas block and Aero barrel is that the gas port has a distance of 0.295 from the shoulder doesn’t just get centered in the block when butted to the barrel shoulder. If so, what is usually an acceptable deviation? Thx
@jackgrafmeier10033 жыл бұрын
I know this is a very late reply but on a set screw style gas block, one of the set screw holes lines up perfectly with the gas hole, so by lining that up you should be able to see if you need to leave a gap from the shoulder or if you can butt it right up against it!
@beeleo3 жыл бұрын
Jack G is correct and the hole in the gas block is often larger than the hole in the barrel to allow for some variations. To be picky, you can always fire a few dozen rounds out of the rifle and then go back... remove the gas block and look for any marking done by the hot gases and adjust accordingly. The gap needed in some setups may be due to the expectation that there will be a handguard end cap between the gas port and the shoulder.

Not as awesome as the M4E1 enhanced, but still pretty cool.

"Skipped" showing an important step, tighten and loosen the barrel nut 3 times to season the aluminum threads so they don't come loose down the road and give you a more accurate torque value.
@Hill_Billy_Without_A_Hill3 жыл бұрын
I wonder if they offer the nut in steel as a option, or just aluminum only?
@macgyver51083 жыл бұрын
@@Hill_Billy_Without_A_Hill I highly doubt it, you don't want to mate Steel to Aluminum parts if you can help it, especially on something threaded if it's parts that are going to see a lot of heat cycling. Because those metals cool at different rates the parts will eventually wiggle loose even with the strongest of thread lockers. So for example mixing Steel and Aluminum for your scope mounts is a bad idea, like say steel rings on an Aluminum base... The other big problem is if the steel puts ONE tiny scratch through the anodized finish on the Aluminum receiver you'll get some nasty galvanic corrosion!
@Hill_Billy_Without_A_Hill3 жыл бұрын
@@macgyver5108 The majority are steel nuts. Been that way a long time. Aero said they offered in steel at 1st, but only went with aluminum to drop weight.

@@Hill_Billy_Without_A_Hill The indexing that occurs between the handguard and upper receiver would prevent any rotation of the barrel nut once it's mounted.

Lol, I think you got to spin around twice then clap your hands 3 times , then spin around the other way 3 times and clap your hands twice..

Do not be fooled. The timing for the barrel nut is not that simple lol. The wedge lock assembly will not fully seat if barrel nut is not perfectly timed.

TRUTH! I fiddled with this for a few hours last night ... I'm not convinced that I got it right LOL

NEVER use a reaction rod like this to tighten barrel nuts. This rod is ONLY for adding or removing muzzle devices. If you want to torque on the upper itself, you have to use an upper receiver clamp in the vise... Now, if your reaction rod has a sail to lock in the upper it would be a bit better, but the proper way is to clamp the receiver.

This!! Was thinking the same thing, hes gonna shear that barrel extension index pin clean off. Best is the midwest industries version

Go watch School of the American Rifle video on torqing barrels and which tool to use. And what happens if you use the wrong holding device.
@robertosborne17535 ай бұрын
@@chrisb9478 Yea I know, but HIS rod has a sail on it (as mine does) but most people dont; they use the geissele rod, which doesnt, and it's not good.

Except for the part where you send out the wrong torx tool. Thank!

The lock wedge is the worst, and you can't get the dust cover off without removing the barrel nut. This stinks.

The main thing you are not saying is the 200$ tool to hold everything in place.

Yeah, the Geissele reaction rod isn't cheap.
