I just did this a few hours ago. You have to remove the barrel nut to replace the dust cover. Removal was easy, seems like it was torqued down to 35 foot pounds, no shims. Took out the dust cover and replaced it with what I had and reinstalled the barrel nut, torqued it to around 50 foot pounds and continued to reassemble. The problem I came across or something that needed to be pointed out in this video is that the gas tube slides right in and the barrel nut doesn't have to oriented for it, there is plenty of clearance. The important part of the barrel install is that the ridges or slots going front to back have to be in alignment with the gas tube because if it's the handguard tightening lugs WILL get caught up on the barrel nut and will not tighten up properly causing damage to the barrel nut. The barrel nut has grooves specific for these handguard lugs and have to be in the proper orientation for everything to line up. I redid everything and saw why it was torqued down to the minimal 35 foot pounds, it lined right up. The shims are necessary if you want to torque down the barrel nut to more than 35 foot pounds. I might order some because 35 is just to little for me.

Got my old barrel, gas block and handguard pulled off my rifle last night in preparation for an Aero barrel, gas system, and 12.7” Atlas S-One handguard. @@MILSPEC_MEXICAN Yeah, you need the right barrel nut for the upper. Aero has their own proprietary system that they sell as well, that only works with their uppers. It sounds like you got the latter. New setup works great, but is slightly overgassed, so I replaced a steel weight with a tungsten one in the buffer to tame it down.

Ordered a Atlas M5 15 inch od handguard for an AR15 from OP. My order was correct, came today, the end label on the box was correct to my order but the box printing was for a AR10 M5 and the 15 inch od handguard inside it was for an AR10. Darn it. Is it normal for the gas tube to have a little wiggle room left to right by the barrel nut? I have noticed when I installed this rail I had a bit wiggle room. @johnch1p

Radial movement of the gas tube in the front of the upper receiver is normal. The OD of the gas tube and the ID of the "cloverleaf" hole in the front of the upper receiver allows movement of the tube to align with the gas key of the carrier. Its also a good indication that the gas tube is perfectly aligned in the barrel nut.

@brianbeauchaine2597 3 жыл бұрын
@@fabiangonzalez-cortes8894 I understand that, but even when dimpling how do you know if you have the hole in the block perfectly lined up with the port in the barrel? Measure the distance between the port and end of gas block then put a piece of tape on the barrel where the end of the gas block should go. Then you can just mark a straight line so you’ll know it hasn’t rolled.
@beeleo
@beeleo 3 жыл бұрын
In just about every case, one of the set screw holes will line up with the gas port. You can remove the screw, align the hole in the block with the gas port, mark everything and then rotate the gas block 180° and tighten down the screws. Dimpling is nice but is in NO way a requirement. It's more of an extra step that's just not necessary. But since you posted this 3 mos ago, I bet you found something out...

Well, first... it's BUTT and not 'but.' And the distance from the upper receiver is directly determined by the barrel nut. If your barrel nut only screws on so far, that's as close as the hand guard is going to get to your upper receiver. All of mine have about 1/64" gap... Is it OK to just butt the gas block onto the barrel shoulder like what you did? My experience with Aero gas block and Aero barrel is that the gas port has a distance of 0.295 from the shoulder doesn’t just get centered in the block when butted to the barrel shoulder. If so, what is usually an acceptable deviation? Thx
@jackgrafmeier1003
@jackgrafmeier1003 3 жыл бұрын
I know this is a very late reply but on a set screw style gas block, one of the set screw holes lines up perfectly with the gas hole, so by lining that up you should be able to see if you need to leave a gap from the shoulder or if you can butt it right up against it!
@beeleo
@beeleo 3 жыл бұрын
Jack G is correct and the hole in the gas block is often larger than the hole in the barrel to allow for some variations. To be picky, you can always fire a few dozen rounds out of the rifle and then go back... remove the gas block and look for any marking done by the hot gases and adjust accordingly. The gap needed in some setups may be due to the expectation that there will be a handguard end cap between the gas port and the shoulder.

You didn't loosen the barrel nut after you initially torqued it to 35 ft-lbs and re-torque to something higher. All the other videos show torque to, say 45 ft-lbs, loosen with a breaker bar then torque again to say, 65 ft-lbs. I was just wondering why you didn't do that. Also when putting in the hardware for the hand guard it's difficult to see because the hardware and hand guard are black and you're wearing black clothing. You got lucky getting it on the first try. No one I know did that. It takes several tries and you have to play around with the screw to get it right.

Went through the trial of finding the right shim count for no reason...the gas tube would have cleared the barrel nut, regardless, with room to spare. Possibly save yourself some time and aggravation by mocking it up before hand, but also make sure the barrel nut isn't going to tighten against the upper before torquing the barrel down.

I guess I got VERY Lucky….. On my one aero Atlas-R-One(full 12oclock 1913 pic rail+ Mloc Version. I got the threaded 🍆& two 🥜’s. Mine did NOT include any Shims & I don’t recall if instruction reguarding the barrel nut torque specs or not. I did get the composite barrel nut, barrel nut wrench n such. Some suggestions if I may. Printing up a single two sided advertisement of some sort & tossing one of them in each rails box so instead of having to track down the information, it’s literally Leaflet or two sides printed page/card or some sort that contains on it, maybe a coupon code or rewards program do more buy more points can save toward various Benefits that can buy only with the points on aero home page/web page or select authorized dealers. As by Putting a QR code on the flier/insert with install instructions in pdf/Microsoft office word style lay out, &/or even a QR code directly to the install video. While it’s not highly difficult to locate the info it does take extra time that with a few dollar price hike to cover the expenses & at the same time turning a one time customer into a 3x or repeat customer is simply just benefiting both the business and the consumer alike in s symbiotic relationship. Anyways, please understand I’m not trying to rip into your business practices. Im just offering up an ide to look at 6then if it makes sense to look into that’s awesome & if deemed fine as in I’ve got no issues with that either. Side note: with your new CHF barrels in the line up, I’d love to see an Carrier with OCKS fasteners and beefy stake job, add a SOPMOD style extractor kit yo a good go/mount c158 bolt using spring go 4-6 coil extractor springs bard off barrel length range & has system length.

"Skipped" showing an important step, tighten and loosen the barrel nut 3 times to season the aluminum threads so they don't come loose down the road and give you a more accurate torque value.

I wonder if they offer the nut in steel as a option, or just aluminum only?
@macgyver5108
@macgyver5108 3 жыл бұрын
@@Hill_Billy_Without_A_Hill I highly doubt it, you don't want to mate Steel to Aluminum parts if you can help it, especially on something threaded if it's parts that are going to see a lot of heat cycling. Because those metals cool at different rates the parts will eventually wiggle loose even with the strongest of thread lockers. So for example mixing Steel and Aluminum for your scope mounts is a bad idea, like say steel rings on an Aluminum base... The other big problem is if the steel puts ONE tiny scratch through the anodized finish on the Aluminum receiver you'll get some nasty galvanic corrosion!

NEVER use a reaction rod like this to tighten barrel nuts. This rod is ONLY for adding or removing muzzle devices. If you want to torque on the upper itself, you have to use an upper receiver clamp in the vise... Now, if your reaction rod has a sail to lock in the upper it would be a bit better, but the proper way is to clamp the receiver.
