if you tear the box that much apart, what could you do there to make it stronger? or what does a gearbox need to handle big amount of tourque? bigger gears? changing the synchros?
@d4a3 жыл бұрын
This is already a very strong transmission which is why I'm using it. My current transmission which is a c50 could not reliably handle the turbo turbo torque my new engine will be making. The main difference are the gears they are dramatically thicker and beefier in the e51. Some transmissions have upgraded aftermarket gear sets for them but they're usually very expensive. If there isn't anything in the aftermarket than you need to make a custom set, which is usually even more expensive. You can also pick up a lot of strength by getting straight cut gears but those are often very noisy. All in all it's usually a lot cheaper to use a different transmission than trying to turn a weak transmission into a strong one. The synchros don't have the task of bearing any torque so they don't really play a significant part in the strength equation.
@kaisertrinityt.m.i.s16073 жыл бұрын

Why rely on GPS for the speedo? The electronic and mechanical speed sendors are interchangeable. That should interface and be scaled to work with your new dash. There might also be "spare" wires in the correct place to repurpose if your car didn't come factory fitted with cruise control. Other Toyotas (SW20, Hilux) had both mechanical and electronic sendors and matching speedos that interchanged. I never found one with the odometer reset in the correct position otherwise I would have swapped out to delete the cable drive.
@d4a3 жыл бұрын
Honestly it's just so much simpler. Figuring out which parts I need for the electronic speedo and then setting up the signal to work with digital dash isn't simple and I need the energy for other bigger things. I also prefer gps speed as it's dead accurate and isn't influenced by tire size and what not. For example when I'm using navigation on my phone I always find myself looking at the speed there and there's always 5-10km/h of difference in every car I've driven.

Great video as always! Does the bearings on differential needs to be configured also? You take them off and install them again and the gap between bearings and the transmission body will be slightly different. That can do some noise or overheat in future. PS: sorry for my poor English, I'm from Russia.
@d4a3 жыл бұрын
Sorry I'm not sure I understand. There's nothing you can configure in this case. They were removed and installed in the same place just on a different diff, but all the Quaife dimensions are identical to the stock one.
@charliebeltram1443 жыл бұрын
@@d4a In RWD cars the tapered roller bearings on differential case needs to set up some kind of "preload" (to reduce a gap in this type of bearings which exists by design) and this procedure must be performed every time if bearings removed or installed. In the video the bearings just install on the same place - is it safe? or for FWD cars it is enough?
@AlessandroGenTLe3 жыл бұрын
@@charliebeltram144 that's an MR2 Toyota, it's RWD (but yes, it's also a central engine, so the setting is similar to a FWD one in that sense). I agree with you on the preload check on the bearing, that's something that should be checked on the manual I suppose.

Hey man, great video. I really want an LSD! Is there no need to shim preload on the quaife? I remember inventing a few tools and techniques to install the stock diff to the correct pre load
@d4a3 жыл бұрын
The shim preloaded may or may not be needed. In my case it wasn't needed. The mechanic you see building the transmission in this video installed dozens of them over the years and he said that about 10 years ago they started being so well made and fit with the casings so well that he almost never needs to shim. They needed shiming a lot more often in the early days though.

All you need to be legal is working brakes on all wheels, working lights everywhere, working parking brake and acceptable emissions for your emissions class. Obviously matching vin numbers and non rusted through chassis and other basic stuff, but no one sweats the "small stuff" like non-original steering wheels, aftermarket wheels, aftermarket suspension, performance air filters etc. Classic cars also get a bit more understanding for stuff like that because people have the common sense to know that keeping a car like that on the road requires a lot of care and effort anyway and owners are enthusiasts who make sure to keep the car in roadworthy condition even without any laws. You can have a legal engine swap too as long as it's not something absurd and poorly made.
