In today’s video I’ll be showing you how to install a limited slip differential, more specifically a quife ATB differential into a manual gearbox. This will be a detailed step by step video covering the entire process and since we’re opening up the transmission we’ll also be rebuilding the transmission along the way so I’ll be showing you that as well.
I’ll be showing you the LSD install and transmission overhaul on a Toyota E51 transmission but the process is very similar for all other front wheel drive or mid-engined manual transmissions. Obviously to install an LSD into this type of transmission you will need to get the gearbox out of the car. In case of my mr2 the easiest way to get the gearbox out is to get it out together with the engine. This means that the optimal time for doing LSD installs is when you’re doing transmission and/or engine rebuilds as you’ll be killing two birds with one stone like this.
Once the transmission is out the first thing I usually do is to clean it. Transmissions often have years of drit, grease and other contaminants on them and you want them cleaned away before doing any work on the transmission because if you don’t clean them you will get everything else dirty and just spread the dirt around.
Once cleaned it’s time to get the transmission onto a working surface and drain any oil from it. We’re going to start by popping out the axle stubs. Next we remove the clutch fork and start taking the transmission apart. First we remove the three bolts inside the bell-housing.
After that we remove the gear selector levers, and then the gear selector shaft itself
To proceed with the transmission rebuild we must unbolt and remove the transmission top cover. Then we remove the snap ring on top of the input shaft and after that the shift fork together with the fifth gear sleeve. Next we need to remove the hub that sits on top of the fifth gear synchro on the input shaft.
Fortunately the fifth gear on the output shaft has a nice big lip on it so after a bit of heat a regular claw type gear puller gets it off with relative ease.
After we remove the shaft retainer plate it's time to remove the three snap rings that hold the shift fork shafts in place. After that we’ll unbolt the middle casing and lift it off from the rest of the gearbox. Now the output shaft, the differential and the shift forks together with the input shaft can easily come out.
Once everything is clean inside the transmission we start by removing the old output shaft bearing. Here you can see how the old bearing has lost its shine. The non-shiny parts have lost their surface hardness and such a bearing is no longer usable.
We then install the new plastic oil squirter and then the new bearing shell gets gently hammered it.
Next it’s time to install the Quaife limited slip differential. Here you can see the Quaife LSD side by side with the stock open differential. We’re going to transfer both of the differential bearings and the ring gear from the stock differential to the Quaife.
First we remove both of the differential bearings, and then we unbolt the ring gear, and finally gently hammer it off the stock differential.
Next the ring bear bolts get thoroughly cleaned in gasoline, the differential bearings get pressed on to the LSD, the ring gear gets gently hammered on, the ring gear bolts get a dab of Loctite and then get bolted down using the weakest setting on the impact wrench. The final step is to torque them down.
Next it’s time to replace the synchro. I’ll only be replacing the fourth gear synchro as it seems that someone replaced the first, second and third gear synchros together with the differential bearings during the last rebuild. Obviously to get to the synchro we need to remove some bearings and gears from the shaft. Once we replace the synchro we install everything in the reverse order of removal.

Reasonable amounts of sealant!? A guy at work was helping us with a traction motor rebuild one day and decided he was going to apply the sealant to the bearing shells. We had to break the motor back down and clean everything again, as there was so much sealant the bearings couldn't seat against the motor. A little goes a long way 😉

Does the CD7 have provision for speed reading in tunnels or canyons? I'm always intrigued how GPS based speedo handle losing the satellite connection. I would think the ABS sensors would be a good option, if they're something the ECU/dash can read, assuming the vehicle has them (not sure if the mk1 MR2 has ABS so maybe not a solution here).

The shim preloaded may or may not be needed. In my case it wasn't needed. The mechanic you see building the transmission in this video installed dozens of them over the years and he said that about 10 years ago they started being so well made and fit with the casings so well that he almost never needs to shim. They needed shiming a lot more often in the early days though.

if you tear the box that much apart, what could you do there to make it stronger? or what does a gearbox need to handle big amount of tourque? bigger gears? changing the synchros?
@d4a
@d4a 3 жыл бұрын
This is already a very strong transmission which is why I'm using it. My current transmission which is a c50 could not reliably handle the turbo turbo torque my new engine will be making. The main difference are the gears they are dramatically thicker and beefier in the e51. Some transmissions have upgraded aftermarket gear sets for them but they're usually very expensive. If there isn't anything in the aftermarket than you need to make a custom set, which is usually even more expensive. You can also pick up a lot of strength by getting straight cut gears but those are often very noisy. All in all it's usually a lot cheaper to use a different transmission than trying to turn a weak transmission into a strong one. The synchros don't have the task of bearing any torque so they don't really play a significant part in the strength equation.

Why rely on GPS for the speedo? The electronic and mechanical speed sendors are interchangeable. That should interface and be scaled to work with your new dash. There might also be "spare" wires in the correct place to repurpose if your car didn't come factory fitted with cruise control. Other Toyotas (SW20, Hilux) had both mechanical and electronic sendors and matching speedos that interchanged. I never found one with the odometer reset in the correct position otherwise I would have swapped out to delete the cable drive.
@d4a
@d4a 3 жыл бұрын
Honestly it's just so much simpler. Figuring out which parts I need for the electronic speedo and then setting up the signal to work with digital dash isn't simple and I need the energy for other bigger things. I also prefer gps speed as it's dead accurate and isn't influenced by tire size and what not. For example when I'm using navigation on my phone I always find myself looking at the speed there and there's always 5-10km/h of difference in every car I've driven.

@d4a
@d4a 3 жыл бұрын
It's actually more accurate than anything trans based,. Usually what you see on a conventional speedo is 10% ish less than what you're doing. I don't know about lag, but I doubt it's significant, but can't say for sure until I try it.
@stephenbello1081

Not as accurate when your in a tunnel. My GPS speedo holds the last speed and shows a tiny "signal lost" icon in this situation. And yes, our local tunnel is steep as it passes under a river and has a speed camera at the bottom of the dip.

NA mr2 has c50 and c52. Supercharged has e51. I currently have a C50 mated to my bike carb engine. But for my new turbo engine I'll need a stronger transmission so I'll be using the e51.

Is a GPS-based speedometer legal where you live?
@d4a
@d4a 3 жыл бұрын
All you need to be legal is working brakes on all wheels, working lights everywhere, working parking brake and acceptable emissions for your emissions class. Obviously matching vin numbers and non rusted through chassis and other basic stuff, but no one sweats the "small stuff" like non-original steering wheels, aftermarket wheels, aftermarket suspension, performance air filters etc. Classic cars also get a bit more understanding for stuff like that because people have the common sense to know that keeping a car like that on the road requires a lot of care and effort anyway and owners are enthusiasts who make sure to keep the car in roadworthy condition even without any laws. You can have a legal engine swap too as long as it's not something absurd and poorly made. All in all for now there's still lots of common sense and no nanny-state stuff which works in favour of project cars at the end of the day.
