How To Install and Code MK8 Golf R, GTI Power Folding Mirrors

The MK8 Golf R and MK8 GTI didn't come with power fold mirrors in the USA. In this video we install power fold mirrors, and code the power fold mirrors to the car. For this installation the door trim panels on the Golf R will be removed, mirror glass will be removed, mirror caps, and mirror housing. The power fold mirrors will also need to be coded on. ! I had a 19 Rabbit Edition and traded for a 380 Edition and I fold them before pulling in the garage. The extra 3 inches I can park farther toward the wall and the extra room between my wife's car is super nice. No more worries about wife dinging my car.

Easiest way I’ve found to remove the mirror glass is to push the outer part of the mirror as far in as you can. Then grab the inner part of the glass with at least two or three fingers and it will pop right out. Replacing them with aspherical mirror glass is a must. There’s no reason to not install them.

paranoia is a thing, it only gets worse with age x) I usually forget to lock my car at home, so I put the keys in my pocket when I get out of the car and press the lock button when I put the keys on the counter. I also never ever take the keys out of my pocket until I don't intend to go back to the car. aka everything removed and doors closed. At the shop I always press the lock as I drop the keys in my pocket. If you don't want to forget something at home you must take to work the next day, put it in the fridge with your lunch :D

You could have gone all out and put an auto dimming mirror on the driver side. Can't see if they make one for the passenger side or not. This would require a lot more wire routing though.

VW's in the US are an absolute rip off! No folding mirrors, no proper LED lights like euro spec, what else? In South Africa we don't have to fit these things aftermarket. It comes with it from factory.

Seems like a ton of work for folding mirrors. Glad you're happy with it, it would be useful in the city for sure. Actually I'm messing with the mirrors on my mk6 right now, replaced the mirror control switch but problem persists. Problem being I lost the 'down' direction functionality. Think it may be a wiring issue? I am getting codes back for 'implausible signal' on the mirrors

The market-to-market differences on what is available, unavailable, standard & optional, no-cost vs up-charge on the MK 8 Golf R is bizarre. Premium paint colors are free in some countries, a fixed up charge in others and a variable up charge depending on color in others. Some markets don’t even offer cloth seats as an option. Parking assist is unavailable in many places. I suppose it is driven by each country’s product and price management folks to figure out how to fill up the area under their market’s price curve. Also the market-to-market price variation is incredible. Spec out a USA equivalent DSG (because manual isn’t available) on the German configuration and the price is about 33% higher after currency conversion.

Really appreciate your videos. I’m currently stuck on getting the door card back on. I’ve reset the clips as you showed. But just not getting a good seal compared to the driver side door I haven’t touched yet. Do you have a more in depth video on getting the door card back on or have any tips for me? I started at the top inserting into the channel and tried to slide it down. Peaking around the sides to ensure the 3 reset clips are lined up. I give some bonks but they just won’t grab fully. I swore at my car :(

I figured it out. If you follow this video to the T you will end up with 3 clips removed with the door card. The other 2 will remain in the door which need to be removed, reset, and slid back into the door card. OBD11 was not very effective. The pay model is a bit ridiculous. First told me power fold mirrors are not available with engine on and good open. Figured I’d do the one tap app to support your work. That didn’t work. Waste of $20. Had to manually go thru long coding and adaptions and that worked. Happy with the result though and appreciate your videos and I learn more about the Golf mk8 platform.

Hey Charles so I’ve done this with my mk7 and installed everything right but I did the coding with Obd11 and all the functions show up in the car but the mirrors nvr fold should I do the coding with vcds instead of the obd11 Or could it be that I installed the wire for the mirror backwards but idk I made sure all was done right just that they don’t fold and I bought them from Paul his Dutch auto parts store 😭 even doe the wires go in one way so I’m just sad they don’t fold when they should but it’s probably bc of the obd11 and I should rather use VCDS RIGHT?

The info was great on the power folding mirrors. I had a problem in the longcoding FAIL OBDEleven contacted me to open the Bonnet (Hood) and that allowed the coding to complete all good.

Charles, why does a $40k+ VW, and a top halo VW at that, NOT come with power folding mirrors as standard equipment? How hard can it be for VWoA (or VW in general) to install these power mirrors on to the Golf-R? Is this part of the continued cost cutting measures we see in our market, or is it a "we don't want to step on Audi's toes..." measure? Even "People's Cars" need power folding mirrors. @@HumbleMechanic Push the mirror to the left or right as far as possible. Then on the side that's pointing outwards, you gently pull and it'll come loose. I've done it a bunch of times and it works fine. Alltho not on the mk8. Perhaps they beefed those up.

How did you find the MK8 door cards compared to your MK 7.5? Like Quality , Differences on the inside where everything plugs in. Better/ worse/same ? I wonder why the new models no longer have the beeps for locking / unlocking.... (My Mk 5 has one beep for locking, 2 beeps for unlocking) (Here (in South Africa) using other remotes to jam the lock signals (to then steal stuff from the car) seems to be a common problem. Making it easier to tell if the car is actually locked probably helps for that as well)

The new ones have the R in it as well. We are now finding if you do this on a GTI you should swap the lights over.

@@HumbleMechanic the app looks quite different, i wonder if it's because it's connected to your mk8, or maybe the android version but the styling is completely different(and i have it updated) for example i dont have the bottom right "chip" icon. I got my obdeleven thanks to the video you did on it years ago so it should be the same vintage/revision as your dongle as well
