Nearly 10 years old, but relevant. I need to replace a cover, and this video was helpful. Thanks. If I was going to offer a suggestion it would be to clean and grease the PTO shaft sections before assembly.

Thank you very much for posting this video. Before today I have never done this job before. The instructions that came with my brand new brush hog were useless. They had wrong information and blurry pictures. Thanks again!

Great video. Thank you! I recently “inherited” a mower deck and was a bit confused by the sheild installation. Your video illustrates clearly that I’m missing a couple key components that allow the sheild to function. Thanks again. Appreciate it greatly!

I am so glad I watched this ! Just removed the Landpride mower shaft for the first time yesterday and need to reassemble. Now I know how to do that correctly.

I always liked for the PTO covers to spin. Never liked hooking up the chains. Not all PTO shafts and covers are manufactured the same, unfortunately. I definitely believe in using PTO shields/covers though. Saves lives and limbs.

You have to grease the male and female parts of the shaft. There are many different mechanisms to attach the bell end and plastic bearing. This was specific to one manufacturer. The plastic zerg fitting breaks frequently, so unfortunately you do have to take it apart all the time to manually grease the plastic bearing. I agree that the shields should be used. They reduce, but they do not eliminate the possibility of your clothes getting caught, pulling you in and spinning you around till you die. A much better plan is to never get close to the shaft, cover or not, and never touch the shaft with the tractor engine running. You still need the cover because you never know when working in the field when you might trip and fall into the spinning shaft even when you were trying very hard not to. The safest thing is to turn the tractor engine off if you get up out of the tractor seat, but that gets impractical pretty quick.

Better to be inpractical than dead or lost your legs or arms!!!

I don't use the grease zerks, instead I use an oiler to put some oil between the locking collar and the yoke (no need to disassemble anything). Grass tends to wrap around the shaft while mowing so safety is not the only reason why you should use a shield.

What about when the shaft won't slide, why no grease to aide in sliding and when storing it tries to seize. Or wont slide easily.

Those pto plastic locking collars can be a right pain to lock in sometimes, had one or two come loose

Good stuff. My Mahindra dealer really couldn't explain the purpose of the chains so I didn't have them on! I do now, thanks!

I need to make a video detailing how to destroy the locking collar on this, while trying to remove the cover so the U-joints can be greased.

how to remove those cover ends, so the shear pin can be accessed, for when it needs to be replaced.

What we didn't learn was where to get these PTO shields, and how do you find out which shield you need for your particular PTO shaft. And if you don't know that, all the knowledge in the world about how to put them on doesn't do you one bit of good. So, where do you get them? How do you know which one you need?
