How to Install and Use Bed Rails for Seniors

This video will provide how-to setup and use information for bed rails intended to improve someone's ability to move in bed and get in and out of bed.
This video highlights 2 options that are both easy to install and work well for any standard height bed that has a mattress over box spring design.

My elderly father is going to be staying in temporary housing following a fire in my parents apartment complex and the bed in the house they will be staying in is low to the ground. I think it’s a platform bed. I’m worried that he will have a little trouble getting in and out of bed. Do you know if this would work on a low platform bed like that?

Out of the box instructions did not indicate to place the bed rail towards the pillow. I put it in the middle of the bed and was ready to return it thinking it more of a hindrance potentially trip someone up , complete game changer moving it towards the pillow end.

If it is an adjustable bed, you might want to consider a stander safety pole. I have a video about it and have used it in similar situations to your moms as it can be positioned close to the edge of the bed or even right up against the edge and doesn’t rely on the bed itself for mounting. They’re a bit more pricey but very practical. Here’s a link to the video (

I watched your video and talked it over with my brother and we are going to go with your suggestion of using the safety pole because the bed is a craftmatic adjustable bed with a mattress and a bed frame (instead of box spring mattress). I will let you know how it works. Thank you because the only bed rails out there was for beds with two mattresses.

I really like the tension poles like in the video below. It’s nearly impossible to find a bed-based rail for an adjustable bed, so something that positions next to the bed works best. True. Fall prevention rails don’t work well on most non-hospital style adjustable beds 😕
