How to install BIMP plugin on macOS Big Sur or Catalina | Batch Image Manipulation Plugin for GIMP💯

Finally, a 100% working installation process is here. In this tutorial, I will show you how to install BIMP plugin or Batch Image Manipulation Plugin for the latest version of GIMP 2.10 on your macOS Big Sur or Catalina version.
With the new plugin update released couple of weeks ago, now it’s an easy-peasy installation process. This new release contains an Installer script file that can do the trick. However, we still need to do some tweaks in order to avoid any possible installation error.
⚠Note! If you are a GIMP user and had you previously installed plugins, you are safe to proceed with the Installer script file. If not please follow these steps.

👉 Requirements:
1- Make sure you have the latest GIMP version installed: GIMP for macOS latest version 2.10:

2- Download BIMP source code latest version BIMP 2.5 (+ MacOS) from Github:

👉 Phase 1: Missing Plug-ins Folder
1- Open your GIMP and head to: Preferences 👉 Folders 👉 Plug-ins
2- Inside ”Plug-ins” make sure you have the following Path with a Thumbs-up icon 👍 ” /Users/xxx/Library/Application Support/GIMP/2.10/plug-ins”. If YES proceed to Phase 2.
3- If you have a Thumbs-down 👎 : this means that the Path doesn’t exist. Therefore, you need to create it.
4- On the right of the selected Path, click on the “open folder” icon. This will bring you inside the plug-in folders.
5- From the top right corner, click on “Create Folder”.
6- Give it a name “plug-ins” and hit “Enter”
7- Once done, press “OK” button to confirm your changes.

👉 Phase 2: Installing BIMP Plugin
1- Once you downloaded BIMP source files (Link above), double click on it to Extract the tar.gz file content
2- Select “installer” script file, and double click on it.
3- Your Terminal Window will pop up, and it will give installation details.
4- If you got “Process Completed” Then you are good to go. If not check what errors you got on your Terminal window. (if you need help put this on a comment bellow)

👉 Phase 3: Enabling and Activating BIMP Plugin
1- After installing BIMP plugin. Go ahead and try to open GIMP, you will get a notification, about “BIMP”. Just click on “Cancel” and then quite GIMP to proceed with activation.
2- Depending on your security, macOS always block unknown plugins and disallow those from being installed. Therefore, you have to “allow” plugin’s installation manually.
3- Head to your macOS 👉 System Preferences 👉 Security & Privacy
4- On the “Allow apps downloaded from:” you will see (“bimp” was blocked from use…). Just click on “Allow Anyway” and you are good to go.
5- Next, relaunch again GIMP, and this time you will get more options about “BIMP”, click on “OPEN”
6- And that’s it, BIMP activation is complete.

Briefly, GIMP considered as the best free Photoshop alternative, is a very neat, yet powerful image processing program, with loads of options, and plugins. But there's one thing it does not do well - and that's automated batch image manipulations. Basically, you can't really record a set of image processing actions and then repeat them when needed. Unless you got the BIMP plugin installed on your machine.
With BIMP you can apply a set of manipulations to an entire group of images! It provides an easy-to-use interface and a lot of image batch functions:
• Resize
• Crop
• Flip and rotate
• Blurring and sharpening
• Color (and curve) correction
• Watermark
• Rename
• Change compression and format
• Image batch process with gimp
• ... and almost whatever you want!

Hi Alessandro! You've created such an amazing plugin! Thank you! I wanted to drop a quick question. I've installed it on a windows laptop and it works perfectly fine. But when I use your Mac installation files, the process goes smoothly, with no errors, but in the end the "Batch image manipulation" option just doesn't appear in the File menu. I'm using an M1 Mac, so maybe the problem lies there. Do you have any idea? I would be tremendously greatful if you could help.

Hey Doudou - thanks for this terrific video. It took me a couple of hours of fiddling around to get it installed. This video was the one that got the plugin installed on my Mac. And even though it doesn't work perfectly, I can set up the tasks and save it as a template. In future, I can just run the template. It's going to save a LOT of time. I pull stills from video and then downsize and compress these for a blog on my site. Thank you again for the excellent and thorough videos on GIMP. make sure that the Gimp program is in the APPLICATIONS folder. I have it in a subfolder in the Applications, and would not work until moved.

Yes in deed if the app is not in the right location then the Path wont work. After all Applications folder is a standard location for apps. But if you dont want to keep the app in a subfolder you just have to change Path and add Subfolder name after Applications/subfolder/...

Hello Doudou, When I click on the "install" file, the terminal window that opens does not show a lot of text. It show only 2 lignes saying "BIMP is installed. You can close the program.""Operation is over" and then when I follow your further steps of installation, BIMP just does'nt show up anywhere. I use MacOs Catalina. tried it. still doesn't work. i was able to bypass the security settings. bimp is loaded in the plugins folder, which corresponds with the plugins path inside gimp. i'm able to open it. it just... doesn't work. there's no batch manipulation item in the file menu. no error message. just... nothing.

Hello, after following your instructions and getting bimp installed I still couldn't get the "batch Image Manipulation" option to show up in the file menu. while troubleshooting I manually moved the bimp files into the applications plugin folder and Ctrl+click the bimp file directly when I noticed it gave an error in the terminal window about gimp version. anyway to cut a long story short I had assumed I did have the latest version of gimp but it turned out I didn't. So I downloaded the latest version and ran it to overwrite my current version of gimp then voila , now Bimp is working and I have the Batch image Manipulation in the File Menu.. Hope this helps anyone having the same issue :)

I followed each and every step and didn't work. I did not have the batch option in the gimp drop down. So I deleted the file and updated my Mac to Big Sur and did it all again, but still nothing changed.

Plz do make sure that the GIMP is located in APPLICATIONS folder. Also you can download this ready version of BIMP. It contains all edits and changes made in this tutorial. All you have to do is run the install script with Terminal. Let me know if it works.

I downloaded the bimp from your link few times ( after deleting it all to see if that would work), but didn' t work. every step works, but I still don't have the batch manipulation option.

@@Askdoudou my gimp is in the app folder. it was before and when I installed again, I manually moved it there. all looks normal, but for some reason I can't get the batch to show up. I had it when I used linux. installed everything and worked. I even updated my Mac today to Big Sur to see if that would work.

Well, maybe it works on a Mac with an intel chip, but not on the Mac Mini M1.
