Hey those look great! I love cedar siding! My dad makes hand split cedar shakes and shingles salvage logging in b.c. canada. He's been doing that almost 40 years already and is one of the only guys left in the bush doing it these days. (at age 71) Handmade is a dying trade. Now they make them all from machine splits. He also had a knife and would score them and then snap instead of sawing (like the other guy i just read in comments dad did as well) Dad says I might be in only a handful of ladies on earth who knows how to handsplit cedar shakes lol

This is looking great! The pure black trimming seemed like a bold choice at first (which is not a bad thing of itself) but now it forms a really nice contrasting frame around the natural wood colour. Great foresight.

Looks great, super jealous. An old Yankee trick I've seen is to take the story pole and mark it with your largest reveal, so in this case 6 1/4. You can then figure out where your transition points are and line up your story pole on an angle with each transition point and that will give you the precise location of each coarse. No math needed.

You have to be careful and double check the shingles recommended reveal from the mill. Even exceeding the recommended reveal by half an inch can lead to premature cupping of your shingles.

the shop/house is looking way better then i thought. the color choices are spot on. i like the wormer color for sure. I'm currently in the middle of doing raised panel wainscoting inside the house with a dramatic color flop. a blue coal color from valspar and a white called grey shimmer ( not grey at all unless you but it next to pure white. but the grey shimmer fits better on the color flop.

When I 1st saw we're doing side wall (that's what you're doing - did) I thought, DAMN! I wish i would have seen this while he was doing it! I spent my career roofing & framing. I'm 11 mins. into this and I said to myself, this young man did his homework! The mesh material is new to me, we used 1x4 for the air gap (on customs) and just laid them up on tracts. Anyone else watching this should pay attention to your words here. I couldn't have taught anyone better! Really I'm really enjoying watching you work! :) Carry on young stud!

Looks good . When I did mine I used a 1X6 to line up the rows at 5 1/2”. I brought a mitre saw up on the pump jacks. I left the shingles natural. The south , east and west sides just naturally turned dark almost blackish. The north sides turned pale. You would think it would do the opposite. Just love cedar gables.

I get that Valspar sponsored the vid but I used Cabot Australian Timber Oil for the same application and it is a very good product. I shared the same concerns of wanting to preserve the beauty of the wood which requires a transparent stain but by default those offer the least protection. The Timber Oil has held up very well and really let the wood shine.

Anyone wondering about the peice of strapping he has nailed into the shingles. The nail holes will eventually close next time they get wet and if water were still get behind the shingle theres several lines of defence behind the shingle itself 🍻

Nice video. I have done shingle siding several times and always snapped a line and set a ledger strip to make sure everything lined up but never thought about putting a string line at the bottom of the next course to hold the shingles in place so I could adjust positions. I guess an old dog can learn new tricks. Beautiful job and thank you for the new technique. Take care and stay well.

Consider buying some used scaffolding from a vendor. You're planning to do your own house build in the future, and the cost of continued rental of similar elevated work platforms will pay for the scaffolding twice over (or even more than that). During my last two story addition, the purchase price of the scaffolding was covered just by the trade to do my own paint work verse hiring professions come do the same task. That doesn't count the savings for having the scaffolding it while doing the windows, roofing, siding, and pretty much all the ladder work.

Great Video and build. I am beginning to install shingles on the three gables of my house. One question I do have is nailing the support bar for each layer of shingles. If I understand your method, you nail a level 1X onto the shingle layer below the previous row to support the new layer. You probably use a few small nails BUT doesn't that leave a hole thru both layers of shingles that are being installed after the support is removed? How do you handle rain soaking through or leaking through the shingles? Is that an issue of concern? I live in western WA, an area that gets over 60 inches of rain a year. Fortunately for me, the three gables won’t face the prevailing storm direction, but two gables do get more weather(rain) that the other.
