Thank you, Brother Shane for a wonderful, wonderful and inspiring video. I have been wanting to light the exterior of my house for years but the professionals in my area are prohibitively expensive. This video and many of your other videos have given me the courage to do my own house for the first time this year. I have a two story house with a mansard roof which presents some unique challenges. Not the least of which is that I don't own a ladder tall enough to reach the top. It never occurred to me that I could rent one! Sure enough the home improvement stores in my area rent them very reasonably! Thank you very, very much for mentioning rental ladders!

Putting the bulbs on the peaks make so much difference. When I was learning installs, my boss showed me pictures of several houses side by side and asked me to pick the better job. I picked the houses with peaks every time but didn't know why. When he showed me, it was suddenly obvious. Now, if I see a house that isn't peaked right, I want to go ring their doorbell and tell them to fire their installer.

My lights are uplighting that illuminate my house and the bulbs are halogen "PAR" 36watt. Could you PLEASE post a new video showing how to R & R the PAR bulbs? I would greatly appreciate it and You Tube greatly needs it too!! Thanks so much!

Amy. Thanks so much for your kind words. I understand getting lost in the KZbin rabbit hole and ending up somewhere totally different. Unfortunately I don’t have experience with PAR bulbs. All the landscape lighting we work with is LED.
@amyferris2882 жыл бұрын
@@lawnandlight Thanks for your reply! My lighting system is 20 years old so I guess I shouldn't be surprised that everything has gone to LED. Although I did see LED bulbs on Amazon that said they were PAR & equivalent to 36 watts. I'm almost positive that my bulbs are halogen because they put off enough heat to melt the snow off of them, which is nice. I thought about getting the LED version to reduce energy usage though, which I'm still debating.

Suggestion about hiding the wire: In houses with vinyl siding and metal soffit, SPT wire will usually pressure-fit into the siding and soffit J-channel. I also try to go over the top of doors and along the top of the wall rather than down low. It's helpful to keep the wires away from ground-dwelling critters and prevent burial in potential snow/ice in areas that get such weather.
@lawnandlight2 жыл бұрын
Great call whiplash. We don’t get snow here so that’s a pro tip! Have you ever had a squirrel chew your lines up on the roof?
@snidelywhiplash2 жыл бұрын
@@lawnandlight I've been fortunate enough to avoid that, but I figure up higher you'd only have to contend with squirrels, where down low there's squirrels, rabbits (ugh), mice, etc. plus the other hazards. Tucking into the J-channel makes it a high-effort thing for them to gnaw on, and animals generally seem to prefer taking the easier route.

Very interesting. A couple notes... It looked like you had two closer light sockets that you could've drawn power from. Also, I probably would've connected to power in the back of the house instead of the front. And you definitely should've tested those lights before stringing them up.

@@lawnandlight -- In the back because who cares about exposed wires in the back. I'd also rather not mess with pushing wires and connectors under the siding. Or under the front doormat.
@lawnandlight2 жыл бұрын
@@dis-springs good point there. Totally agreed to a certain extent. We just realized that the labor to hide the wire in the front vs the extra wire going to back is negligible. On bigger houses that could be over 100’ extra. We always just taught our guys to go ahead and hide it no matter if it was front or back for a professional appearance. You’re right, most people wouldn’t care. However a few do.

Suggestion/Question for the power supply cord. Based on where your wall outlet is located, wouldn't it have been better to run the power cord straight up to where you put in that jumper and then power that one segment right-to-left across the garage, then go left-to-right for the rest of the roof line? Basically you would have been supplying power into the middle of the run instead of the end. Would have made the power cord run a lot shorter and less wire to hide.

One thing I didn’t see you mention was which wire is neutral and which is hot. On 1 color molded wires (all green,) one will be ribbed and one will have writing. The ribbed wire is always considered the neutral. This wire is supposed to connect to the biggest prong on the plug, as that is the neutral from the outlet. You may think that this is not that important, because the lights will still work either way. This is incorrect, it is important. When the neutral wire is energized, that means the threads of the bulb are energized when it’s screwed in. As you unscrew a bulb, it will turn off like normal when the solder bead loses contact with the base of the socket, but the threads will still be energized all the way out. This makes changing bulbs while the line is plugged in a fairly dangerous task, as now *you* can become the path to ground by touching the energized threads.

Great insight & information slurpee. Thank you Question: is the ribbed side just a reference to do the same thing every time? Both wires inside the plastic housing are exactly the same right?
@DurpeeSlurpee Жыл бұрын
@@lawnandlight correct, they’re both the same exact copper wires under the insulation. The ribbing is just so you can tell them apart. Normally in the USA, on 120v systems, the black wire would be hot and the white wire would be neutral. Since you are using 120v but both wires are the same color (usually green for x-mas lights,) you need a way to differentiate. This is where the ribbed/smooth wires come into play.

I’ll be installing in the rain. Is it okay if the male/female get wet when connecting them?
@lawnandlight2 жыл бұрын
Not a big issue but try to keep them dry. Water is a conduit and too much of it will conduct and short out the line or give you a little jolt.

What do you do with the lights in the off season? Do you save the clients lights for the next year? Or do you do new ones every year?
@lawnandlight2 жыл бұрын
Hey Mike. Yes lights are saved. Most light companies store them for there clients and reinstall year after year
@mikesimmons10122 жыл бұрын
@@lawnandlight awesome, thanks. How are you storing them, large bins? Are you numbing the strands once down so you know where to reinstall the next season? And is the first year more expensive to the customer then the following years, since they have to pay for the lights, then after that just install?

Quick question on the jumps. When you were discussing the one, you said that there needs to be 2 jumps for every jump. Why couldnt you just run it from the first jump? This is me watching having 0 idea or experience. So forgive my ignorance. Thanks!
@lawnandlight11 ай бұрын
Hey Devin. Without watching it back I think I may have said you need 2 females and 2 males for every 1 jump. Something like that or at least it was supposed to be. Thanks for watching.

Great video. Are those male and female connections you made a safety concern in terms of water? We get tons of snow and some of mine would be covered.
@lawnandlight2 жыл бұрын
That’s a good question Kevin. We don’t get much snow down here but we do get a decent amount of rain in the winter so I’ll speak to what I know. The only time I have ever seen rain to be an issue is when it rained relentlessly, ground lights/stake lights would trip breakers if a section of the lights were submerged in water. It’s very rare that we’ve seen roof lights tripping because of rain. Snow - 2 years ago, we got 8” and then 6” 4 or 5 days apart. It stayed frozen for close to 2 weeks and didn’t seem to affect the lights. If anyone in the community reading this comment has more experience with snow, please let us know your experience with snow.

When going from one level to another, instead of cutting the string and adding your lamp wire to get to the second level, what do you think about just removing the sockets that are between the the second level and first level and just taping off the pin holes?
@lawnandlight2 жыл бұрын
That’s definitely a pro level tip. Here’s what we have experienced over the years. The stringers that were being produced 5-7 years ago you could easily remove the sockets. The ones now are much more difficult to do that with.

I see you installed some of the lights pointing up, is there any issue with water running into the socket and causing the bulb to stop working.
@lawnandlight2 жыл бұрын
No. There are little weep holes for draining

Great tips and tricks, sadly, i have a 2 story home, and i just cant see myself climbing around on top, afraid of slipping and falling, and not sure access with ladder is practical/accessible being top half sits back a from bottom level. Ugh 😩

Sorry. I know that’s frustrating. Some roofs are just not as practical.
