You can get a strip of "diffused" transparent plastic to run over the LED's (creating a tunnel instead of a "shelf/lip" for the LED's to sit in). This will unfortunately dim the lights slightly, but will completely break up the LED hot spots (you will no longer see the reflection of each individual LED on the ceiling, it will just be a very even light all the way around). Great walk-through nonetheless, this is probably the most dedicated and professional ceiling LED setup I've seen on KZbin. Everyone else just sticks/staples the LED's directly to the drywall and calls it a day.

Wow! Thank you so much! I appreciate that! For me the biggest problem was the semigloss paint that I chose. And your suggestion would definitely help. I did that with a custom table I built for our local film and TV production company. Thank you again!

I know this is 3 years old, but this is great, besides painting the inside of wood channels I recommend an aluminum light strip holder with a diffuser to prevent the hot spots of light on the ceiling.

Thank you Intergalactic Gamer and congrats on 2k!!! A diffuser would have been SOOOO much better combined with a flat paint instead of the semigloss that I used.

Thank you. Yes the indirect lighting will yield the best result. You will need to use a controller every two strips. So plan on running multiple low voltage wires to keep the brightness consistent depending upon your room size.

I did a similar project ten years ago using regular white rope lights and a wall dimmer switch. Years later I put some faux grape vines up there. It still looks awesome. I like your installation methods better. Anyone who tries this should use your methods.

I did this about 12 years ago with rope lights. I did the ceiling in an embossed pattern wall paper imitating the tin ceiling look, which I painted with semigloss. I installed a medium sized crown molding for the ceiling. Then I dropped six inches and installed crown molding over a reversed base molding strip. I painted the inside of the lower crown molding with high gloss paint for reflectivity. It was a stunning effect and everyone who saw it loved it. I would video it, but I sold the house. I would do a project like this again, although with LEDs and maybe a Beagle Bone Blue or even ESP32s.

I searched, but couldn't find any pics. I was not big on photographing back in those days. I should have documented all of the major remodels and minor ones too for the eventual new owners, but I was working long hours and then remodeling as well, so I put it off and never did it. I am trying to mend my ways, so if I do it again at our 2nd house, I'll make images and video.

Arduino works well (and for a fair price cheaper then the Beagle) with the WS2811/12/12b/13 stuff... There is all sorts of effects and things you can do if you are thinking of doing the single board PC route.

@UDoIt2
@UDoIt2 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for taking the time to comment. I started building things very young with my dad who taught me a lot of what I know today. But there are many things that I don't know but I'm jump in and figure it out. Sometimes I cuss in disbelief when things don't workout but then I take a step back and try again. DIY construction comes with its price - sometimes you ignore the overall cost of a project because you are making purchases a little at a time. The molding itself in this wasn't so expensive but the Philips Hue bulbs and light strips were VERY pricey. I tried not to spare any expense since it was for my son. This was one of the easiest projects and the thing that really helped was the right tools (router / pneumatic finishing nailer / compound miter saw) and those jigs that I crafted. The jigs will help most crown molding installation go very quickly. Ask the questions, post a couple of photos on instagram or twitter and tag me and I'll see what I can do. If I can't answer it I will have my cousin answer it - he is a home builder. Thanks again!

So cool! And buying the tools are sooo worth it for future projects and independence from contractors. I'd say that the best power tool I ever bought has to be my cordless drill, but that wasn't used in the crown molding (it was used for installing the drywall though). If you are going to use a router I'd get a small trim router that can handle 1/4" bits and get a roundover bit. And you really don't need a miter saw (that was the next best tool for this job - in its entirety because I used it to cut all of the studs including the crown molding) you can use a box miter saw but you have to build a jig to hold the crown molding at the right angle within the miter box - and if you don't have a miter box you would have to make one. Thank you!

do the light strips and bulbs work from the same bridge and app
@UDoIt2
@UDoIt2 7 жыл бұрын
Yes they do. You can have up to 50 devices on one bridge. I have 10 bulbs and 2 light strip controllers so that is 12 devices total on the bridge. My son added these all to his music studio so they are controlled within one room container within the app. You can then add existing themes or create your own themes to choose from. Thank you for watching and commenting.

One thing I can say from some experience working in old homes: i wouldn't have laid it out ONLY in parallel with the ceiling unless you check first if the ceiling and other trim work are parallel. This may not be a problem in this home, but for anybody watching and reading it would be a good idea if you are doing this project.
@UDoIt2
@UDoIt2 6 жыл бұрын
yea, I heard of some plaster problems where corners where loaded out so much that you couldn't get a true joint and sloping floors. In this room the floor has a hump in it that was right where the double doors were installed so that caused some extra headaches. I went with parallel to the ceiling since there are lights being installed to keep a uniform distance all the way around. This was a complete tear-out so I had an opportunity to install roxxul in every bay and pack out any problem areas but fortunately there were no problem areas. Thanks for the comment and the perspective.

Your end result was truly fantastic!!! It’s incredible how easy you made it look too!! I’m curious, has anyone reading this done this or a similar project on textured walls or ceilings and has it turned out nearly as good as this one?
@UDoIt2
@UDoIt2 Жыл бұрын
ohhh textured walls - My guess is if you mark out with a pencil or chalk line at the bottom part where the first board would be attached and remove the texture. If the texture is small (low profile) it might not be a big deal. But if the texture is heavy then you will want to flatten it out either by removing it or doing a Paul Peck Drywall Skim coat over the area that will be behind the board.

Pretty friggen cool! I wish I had of done this, I just put up crown molding in my bedroom. Would have been awesome for ambient light. There is one suggestion I have, you should get some thin plexiglass or acrylic panels and cut them into strips then scuff them up and use them to diffuse the light and give it a more even and uniform glow. They can just be rested on top of it, no need to fasten them down, I seriously doubt they would get knocked out of place. Plus it would make keeping those clean super easy, the way it is now you'll have to shop vac all the dust and god knows what else out lol.
@UDoIt2
@UDoIt2 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this suggestion! I have no idea what it looks like up there. I might 3DPrint an attachment just for cleaning the crownmolding and add some bristles like they use on CNC dut collectors. That design would probably be done during a livestream. And it would work very well with acrylic. Thanks again!

How many feet is the perimeter? Are you using philips hue or another brand? That will help determine how many outlet's you need to install. Try to keep the recommended distance per philips hue controller to 25% less than what they recommend.
