I got "-sh: mtd not found" when i want to erase the nvram by the command line"mtd-erase -d nvram" It seems there is NO such "mtd" command in both Win 7 telnet nor PuTTy. Can any one helps?

if you have R or W at the end its the same as U.

"clear nvram" only invokes the Linux 'clear' command, which ignores parameters and only clears the terminal display and doesn't touch nvram values at all. On dd-wrt, the command should be "mtd erase nvram && reboot" That should get you to factory defaults for ddwrt (or you can use the reset mechanism in the web UI).

Guys, i need to know something: I want to make a repeater bridge using this router, just like my current configuration with my old linksys wrt54g 24ghz where I use one antenna to link my other router and the other to broadcast, my question is, which antenna is rx and tx in the Asus, are the 3 antennas dual band? which of the 3 should i used it to point to my other router?.. thanks.

I've heard that the AC66U is pretty much identical to the AC1750. Will the same firmware work for the AC1750, or will it just brick the router?

Is this worth it? I've tried Tomato and Merlin's custom build, but neither of them fixed the problem I've having. The problem I speak of is signal degradation. The router's signal just seems to be getting worse and worse over time. I would consider myself intermediate with router configuration, but definitely not an expert. I tried tweaking settings and troubleshooting with forums. Nothing has worked so far. The connection just keeps getting more and more unstable. My Samsung Galaxy always gets an unstable connection error.

I am curious about the two firmware links that you have posted. What is the difference between the two? Is the first firmware link a base install maybe and the second firmware link adds additional feature? I just recently purchased this same router and was wondering how I can look at these firmware updates and see what changes have been made in them. Any ideas?

After I reset the nvram, I don't receive a message from Putty saying that it was successful. After it was cleared, I can no longer ping my router! Any idea what's going on?

Which firmware do you like better? the stock firmware seems to have more icons and tabs in the GUI. The DD-WRT firmware looks like its more of a spreadsheet with a bunch of text and options but no icons.

Try Merlin's custom build. It's practically the same gui as the stock firmware, but you have more options.

DD-WRT more organized. Asus tends to use wierd names from some features. Also DD-WRT sometimes increase wifi range.

FYI I pooped myself a little when I thought I bricked my brand new AC66U after applying the latest dd-wrt firmware.... It wasn't assigning an IP address after reboot, nor was it providing any wireless access point.... Yes, I have delete the nvram and reboot the router, and used PuTTy. only i have used the command clear nvram (as in the video) in stead of erase nvram I will do it again and use the command "erase nvram: and keep you posted

Did you delete the nvram and then reboot the router after upgrading to 22490? Using PuTTy or whatever other program you use for Telnet/SSH type the command "erase nvram" and then "reboot"

All, You do not have to clear the nvram when you push the firmware up to the router. Once the router has the dd-wrt firmware and If you cannot get back into the router settings page using your web browser there is a reset button and you would hold the reset button till it resets to default you will see all ports flash once and the router will reboot. It's a little sad you don't realize that "clear nvram" doesn't touch your NVRAM. You should read up on how to use a shell.

lol all you have to do is to set your router to rescue mode (hold reset button for 5 seconds, press power button to shut down the router while holding reset button and start the router while holding reset button till power LED light blinks slowly), set your PC IP setting from automatic to static (gateway should be 192.168.1.1 and dns servers should be blank), open web browser and go to 192.168.1.1 and upload firmware to your router and reboot your router after upload is done and change IP settings to automatic.

Yes. Method which I mentioned will erase firmware from the router and only leaves rescue mode which is stored to rotuers ROM..... But I recommend getting the latest official firmware just in case

Thanks for the reply. So under rescue mode one is able to upload a .bin firmware? Btw, is ASUS Merlin considered an official firmware? I have ordered and waiting for ASUS RT-AC68U I will get it any day now and I haven't decided yet if I will flash Merlin or Kong.

.bin is just one of many file formats and doesn't tell if it is supported or not and you get the official firmware from asus support site. I would highly recommend staying with the default firmware as it is most stable one out there and I had issues with Kong (BSODs and connection loss as it isn't officially supported meaning you'll see features which router doesn't support etc.) Merlin is pretty much same as official firmware but with more tweaks and script support (which is useless to most people)
