This was very helpful! I was replacing my previous Ecobee with a new one and was running into power issues. I do not have a C Wire (nor did I with the first one) and so I was trying to use the same ports on the mounting device. It turns out that the PEK handled the splitting differently. It wasn't until I matched my wires in the same spot as you did that I was able to get the system to power on and start to function. Thanks for sharing this as I now have a functioning HVAC unit again!

Hope you know you had 2 un used wired that you could had used one to connect to c wire terminal at the furnace and find the other end where the thermostat is and connect it to ecobee c wire terminal

Hello! What happened to the short orange wire connected to RC and RH? Dont you need that to your new thermostat? Thanks.

@adamdietrich2309Ай бұрын
I just wanna let everyone know that in this video there were two extra wires in the thermostat cable. You can use one of those wires for your C terminal without having to wire that adapter in. if you don’t have an extra wire you need that adapter. I also saw a couple people asking about the jumper between RC and RH the ecobee thermostat will do that on its own. The only time you would need the RH on the ecobee is if you’re working with gas or oil and have a separate transformer for your heat.

I have a old house and my thermostat has only 2 wires how can I add the C wire?
@thediygrunt13 күн бұрын
Depending on what type of system you have you may not be able to use the Ecobee. The instructions will want you to know what type of heating system you have before you can proceed. If you have not bought an Ecobee yet you can find the instructions online on their website. If it will work with your system then you will probably have to use the Power Extender Kit that comes with it. I have a video on how to do that type of install as well.
@carladler52834 ай бұрын
Do we need to install the power extender kit into roof mounted HVAC (Arizona 🥵)?
@thediygrunt4 ай бұрын
The PEK is only used when there is an absence of the C wire. The instruction manual for the Ecobee provides 3-4 different wiring set ups based off what your furnace and A/C situation are. I can't say for sure if you need the PEK simply based off the location of your HVAC. If you have not bought an Ecobee and are simply researching to see if you want to install one you can find their instruction manual online and you can remove your current thermostat to see what wires you have.

I hate my ecobee it gets either wayyyy to hot or wayyy to cold in my home and the accuracy to read the temp is way off i find myself having to turn it on and off or adjust the temp all day to keep it comfortable in the house
@michaelwright40292 жыл бұрын
In Mountains, no ac needed, so no yellow wire. Just a white, red & green, but green is not hooked up on either side (furnace or thermostat) so this exact ecobee will work with just the red & white in THERMOSTAT connected, and red white & that "added" C from conversion kit hooked up in furnace? correct? (green is just 4 fan 2 run, we dont need that up here, so not connectedor needs 2b)
@michaelwright40292 жыл бұрын
So that conversion kit thing is adding the power through the red or white to power in the thermostat? right?

I'm not a professional so I can't say for sure. My best recommendation is to contact their support team and see if they can guide you on the proper product for your situation.

I’m having a call for heat error code on the HVaC. My old thermostat had a jumper wire from Rh to Rc, and my AC unit isn’t turning on, any suggestions as to why?
@thediygrunt5 ай бұрын
Since I'm late responding you have probably resolved this already. But If everything work fine before then the first thing I would have done was reinstall that jumper wire. If that didn't work then you need to consider if this is something you can fix yourself or calling an HVAC person is best. You could probably figure it out by doing research and looking at the wiring for all the units but not everyone wants to mess with electrical and depending on where the furnace and air handler are some people would rather not go into there attic or crawl space.

Where do I get the power extender kit? Mine didn't come with it
@thediygrunt2 жыл бұрын
Do you have the ecobee 3 lite? To my understanding, the kit should have come with the power extender kit. I can't speak for any of the other models. I recommend contacting their customer service.
@ericmurray32762 жыл бұрын
why didn't you just untwist one of the extra wires not being used and go from the c terminal on the furnace to c on the thermostat?
@thediygrunt2 жыл бұрын
Running the wire from the furnace to the thermostat would have taken longer and been far more work than simply installing the device that comes with the Ecobee. For my upstairs one I probably could have run the wire without to much issue due to the furnace being directly overhead in the attic. But for some of the other furnaces that solution might have been very difficult if not near impossible to pull the wiring through all the walls.
@perryjoseph98722 жыл бұрын
@@thediygrunt running wire wouldn't be necessary. On the bundle of thermostat there were two unused wires, blue and black. Just untwist it as Eric said and connect it to the c terminal at the control board. Now that it's connected untwist the corresponding color at the thermostat and there you go

What process were you following? Just wondering

Can this be used with old 2-wire system? Thx
@thediygrunt Жыл бұрын
I am no HVAC specialist but if you only have two wires going to your thermostat then I do not think that will allow the Ecobee to function correctly. It may be possible to run additional wiring from your furnace and A/C to allow the Ecobee to function but that could be complicated and most likely require a pro to be able to set it up and run the wires.
@robhalter17 күн бұрын
looks like your wire harness at the furnace has extra wires in it . All you had to do was add the C wire .

I Have a red jumper cable! I just disregard like yours?
@thediygrunt2 жыл бұрын
Looking at the instructions it mentions that if you have jumper cable connecting Rc, Rh, or R then you can disregard this cable as the Ecobee does not need it for proper function. For reference I found this Tip on Step 5 of installing with a C wire present and on Step 14 of installing using the PEK.

why does the yellow wire go to PEK instead of Y1?
@thediygrunt2 жыл бұрын
The instruction manual has 3 different processes to follow depending on your wiring and your system. The wiring diagram for my specific process, instructed that the yellow wire go to PEK. I don't know the exact technical reasoning for why, I just followed the instructions.

How big is your house that you have 4 thermostats?!
@thediygrunt Жыл бұрын
I did a house reveal when we moved in about two years ago if you are interested in seeing it. But it is around 5000 sq ft, give or take. Yes its ridiculous, but it is zoned pretty well and 4 units is appropriate.

this is junk I hook it up step by step nothing, called a profession he said it was right and he couldn't figure it out , called a second company and they could get it running!!!!!!!!!!!!
@thediygrunt Жыл бұрын
Not sure if you are saying my video is junk or the Ecobee. I'm assuming the Ecobee, so my opinion is you potentially got a faulty one that was bad straight out of the box. I have installed 4 of these, my parents have had them in their last two properties and my dad installed one in a relatives house and they have all worked without issue. In my experience I have had no problems and they do exactly what they are suppose to do. I would suggest calling the company and seeing if they will send you a replacement or maybe return it from where you bought it and say it is faulty since the professional couldn't get it to work.

@thediygrunt4 ай бұрын
My best guess is the wire that is supposed to be the A/C is the heat and the heat wire is the A/C wire. Try swapping those wires.
