Hello Fast Monty, love the channel. Especially the ones about gauges. I am looking to install some gauges in my truck. I have been looking at these same gauges you have in this video. These are autometer brand, but are they made in USA? Or are these gauges part of autometer's economy made in China/ Taiwan series ? I really like the look of these. Have they been accurate and reliable? Thanks for any help.
@FastMonty19 күн бұрын
Great question... my guess is these are made in the US. I say that because the digital fuel gauge I upgraded to was NOT cheap, and they changed the bezel to match my current chrome trim rings. Kind of a cool option... had to call them to arrange it for a whopping $20. super impressed with the gauges, and the customer support. Have fun, and thanks for the comment!

Smith's dual water Temp with oil PSI has a 1/8" BSP 10mm on the gauge. I used a braided steel oil feed line with 4AN fittings, 1.25 pitch. To connect to the mbike oil feed either at the oil cooler or on the block I used a dbl banjo bolt and compatible connectors which I sourced from a pneumatics supplier.

Question: You didn't mention and/or cover whether or not you need to 'bleed' the oil pressure gauge line before or after making the connection to the gauge. Is that necessary? I just did this very thing on my 70' Buick GS455... and all went well, but I'm still seeing air gaps in the line coming to the gauge. Would be great to know whether or not 'bleeding' is needed. Thanks.

Now, oil pressure in a mechanical gauge depends on the oil reaching the gauge, not so? Is it necessary to prevent the oil from draining from the capillary tube or does it self prime?
@FastMonty Жыл бұрын
Actually, NO. Oil does not have to reach the gauge. As you can probably see air gaps in clear tubing... you have to keep in mind that air can be pressurized, and transfer pressure to the gauge. So, there's no need to bleed those lines, or worry about oil draining away from the gauge. Thanks for the comment!

Surely I'm a noob, but I have a silly question. So basically, with this mechanical OP gauge, there will be oil passing thru the hose? Or the oil will push the air inside the hose that goes to the gauge, hence the reading
@FastMonty Жыл бұрын
Good question... it's a little of both. If you're using the clear capillary tube you'll see oil AND air in it. Which is fine, air pressurizes too... and will translate the pressure to the gauge. FYI, you always have to keep an eye on the plastic tubes condition throughout it's life. OR, upgrade to an AN line, which I did in this video... kzbin.info/www/bejne/fWnXp4Kcl7ukppo Have fun!

@@FastMonty Hi, it work pretty good actually, I think I purge the line accidentally, this accident can be replicated to purge the bubbles out. What append was the line was not tight enough at the gauge, after running the engine for a few minutes I noticed a little drop of oil oozing out so tightening a little more was necessary to stop the leak, at this point I think the air was totally or partially purged. For the initial test I completely cover the carpet with blankets and rugs and wrapped the line around the gauge nut with a paper towel in case of leaks, I have a high oil pressure problem so I used a $14 copper line kit from Auto Zone so I can not tell if there is air still trapped in the line but the gauge seems to be working fine, Thanks for your help.

So, there are two threads to be concerned with... the 1/8 NPT fitting has oil resistance PTFE tape on it, which is tight. Like you would for any plumbing job. :) The fitting that has the plastic tube/collet, is not quite as tight, because you can damage the plastic tube. @FastMonty I have never installed tripple guages before. I'm a beginner. Even though I have restored classic Mustangs for 40+ years. I've always been old school. So, I got a set of Bocsh mechanical guages for my 1967 Mustang. Stock 289. Hooked everything up per instructures. Then realized, the instructions never stated anything about putting any type of sealant on any of the fittings. All the fitting are brass. My temp went into the plug at the thermostat housing. And the oil pressure went onto the left side of the block where the original oil switch went. But I didn't put anything on the threads. Should I take it all back apart and put something on them? All I have is white Teflon tape. And RTV sealant.
@FastMonty7 ай бұрын
