Interesting. I went the route using Home Assistant using Zwave and Zigbee using docker on a Synology DS1821+. It had challenges getting Zwave and Zigbee to work on a Synology but it has been rock solid. Hope you have as much fun setting up a smart home as I am having.

Hold on, you mentioned that even if the internet dies, the homekit still works locally. How does it work? Everytime my internet is disconnected, the homepod mini stops responding, it does not control any devices anymore. Even using my iPhone, I cannot control the smart devices without internet.

I enjoy most of your videos, but HomeKit and Apple cant be considered as the BIGGEST PROBLEM. Smart Home enthusiasts would not be bothered with Apple at all.

In my opinion the best way to make a smart home work is to integrate with HomeKit if you are an Apple user or google home if you are an android user
