Hey y'all, hope you're all staying safe at home! It definitely feels weird putting out a video as normal right now, but I hope that it can provide some entertainment and help pass the time you're spending at home. Stay tuned for Part 2 of the series, where I build and install some DIY plywood and laminate countertops. Go ahead and get subscribed so you don't miss it when it comes out next week : goo.gl/V5gcNJ

Question why didn't you try spraying your cabinets and replacing the hardware with soft close it would cost you a fraction of the new one, as well as getting new countertops it's not that time consuming and would yield great results?

Swapping solid hardwood cabinets for thermofoil plastic covered crap? Rip out granite for plywood plastic formica crap? The removal and installation techniques were great, which was the purpose of the video so you deserve a Thumbs Up. Putting that sweet Blum hardware on those boxes is like putting a Ferrari engine in a Yugo. I hope you can live with the material choices. Free from Lowes or not, I think you're going to regret this.

For kitchen and bath cabinets... he's right: It's 'dated'. [Unless, you're going for a country-kitchen sort of vibe. ] It's all preference, of course. ;) /17 years I've worked in over 100 homes a year of many types, 100 y.o. craftsmans, mid-century modern, Cape Cod, ultra modern, etc. Wood cabinets [like that design] are definitely not modern, nor up to date. [edit: unless the wood is book-matched and is cut in a modern style; not showing any of the framing, hinges, etc.]

I know you were sponsored by Lowe’s and need to use their product, but after doing my own kitchen, I have to highly recommend to anyone Ikea’s cabinets. They are cheaper, high quality, 256ear warranty, and SUPER EASY to install. Their rail system makes all that leveling and shimming your doing on each cabinet completely unnecessary. Their online kitchen planner is an easy amazing tool to plan your kitchen, and is smarter than any store employee and will catch any errors made before you buy everything. They also have tons of great features like soft close everything that’s a breeze to install. I never did any remodel or cabinet work in my life and did my kitchen 100% by myself. I really can’t recommend their stuff enough.

I have installed over 75 box kitchen / Ikea kitchen cabinets over the years. We do not have a Lowes in my area but do have Home Depot and Home Hardware stores. These Lowes cabinets ( especially the sink base ) look very well made but I will say that IKEA cabinets are leaps and bounds better than Home Depot and Home Hardware cabinets.

We ordered Kraftmaid thru a local company in OKC after getting costs from both big box stores and 2 other local cabinet companies. The local cabinet makers said they could not start until the fall due to doing cabinets for a builder. I went back to local store and changed some things and price came down. Kraftmaid was actually on sell in April when I ordered. Prior to ordering 6-8 wks. Day after we ordered they said 8-12 weeks.They arrived at 8 1/2 weeks. We were pretty sure they would come in less than 12, as we only ordered a pantry and 5 lower cabinets. They were delivered last week and we will do install this weekend. Glad I found your videos as they will come in handy. I had not see the pulls you used on your cabinets. Personally I like the original cabinets better. Not a big fan of white cabinets. We were looking at medium wood cabinets but finally went with a midnight blue. Pretty excited to see it redone. Previous owner had put in 1930's cut down cabinets into a 1955 built house. Thin doors and they had been painted 5 times. If they had been like my grandparents cabinets, I would not have minded. These were thin cheap and done out of 4 types of wood. No backs and shallow. Husband and son in law are doing install then local company will come do the countertops. I would tried to reuse the granite counter tops. Glad you donated them. I see so many videos that they just smash them up. Most could have been reused as garage cabinets.

5:24 watching remodeling shows on TV always irks me when they smash kitchen cabinets for televised fun. Very rarely do I hear someone on those shows say they need to save the cabinets to donate them. Unless they're just *trashed* surely someone could use them for SOMETHING, anything, better than ending up in a landfill. Thank you for making sure to mention you donated yours.

Not running flooring under the cabinets is pretty common, and in fact is recommended by some manufacturers. If you set a bunch of heavy cabinets on top of wooden flooring, it can restrict its ability to expand and contract with the seasons.

Funny how fashion goes in circles. Back in the era of WW2 mass-produced tract homes, all you got was plain white cabinets - but were thankful for having your own home after the nation had gone through depression and a war. As people prospered in life they upgraded their cabinets from institutional white to a warmer more natural (and expensive) look of real wood. One piece formica countertops were the quality standard for many decades until natural stone became more available. To my eye, natural wood and stone makes a more beautiful, warm, and welcoming kitchen. Funny how now in the popular remodeling shows people show how sophisticated they fancy themselves by being repulsed at the sight of natural materials saying, "Ewww.. how dated!" So, to "update" the kitchen they rip out the expensive natural materials and make it look like a basic tract home from the 1940's. But anyway, thanks for taking the time to make the video and sharing your diy project.

Awesome video. I recently installed my dishwasher as well. It’s difficult to tell in the video if you did this or not. Formica downgrade from Granite. Can't tell from the video if the granite was in bad shape but based on the rest of the kitchen, I assumed it was all right. I would definitely put in new granite, leave the formica for the garage workstations. That oven probably costs around $3k, so I bet overall you're in the $11-12k range for new cabinet replacements. I just got done putting in a very small rental kitchen with these Kraftmade cabinets from Menards, but mine had the adjustable feet which I'll admit were nice to fine tune for level and plumb.

Here I am with a very small area for woodworking in my overstuffed garage, and I'm in the process of designing replacement kitchen cabinets. I'm starting small and doing the three bathroom vanities before the kitchen, with the smallest vanity being the first, to see how they come out. If all goes well with those three, it's full steam ahead for the kitchen cabinets. Makes me wonder why someone with the means to build their own cabinets buys them instead.

He did a cost breakdown in the video, including the amount of time it would take to build the cabinets. The question was answered IN the video. For him, it is not about the money, but about the amount of time he would need to dedicate to the fabrication of the cabinets if he did the work himself. The actual dollar cost of doing it himself would be thousands less, but he is probably getting the cabinets for free from Lowes as part of the sponsorship deal. The math will work differently for you. If you don't get it, watch the video again.

A couple of options to hide those screw holes on the island would be to wrap the toe-kick piece around the whole island like a low-profile baseboard, then put the quarter round around that...or, wrap the outside 3 sides of the island with an actual baseboard that matches what's in the rest of your kitchen. Yep. I have Ikea cabinets and their rail system and adjustable feet make cabinet install a breeze. After setting a level line just attach the rails on that line and you don’t have to deal with all of that shimming and leveling mess he was doing. Just quickly get the back to front level with the feet and you’re good to go!
@thomasarussellsr
@thomasarussellsr 4 жыл бұрын
@@darinnetherland3466 yeah, hanging rails or french cleats are great, until you have a warped wall in an older home and have to deal with dips and bump-outs all along the wall. Then the shims are right back in there to support your rail staying straight and tight. In a perfect world with straight and true walls, hanging rails would be ideal. As for the adjustable screw feet, that sounds like a great idea as floors often have high and low spots as well. Thanks for the mention of the alternate (primary, where you are from) method of install.
@darinnetherland3466
@darinnetherland3466 4 жыл бұрын
Thomas Russell true, and I had to deal with that fey situation, but shimming a rail once and having everything hang from it perfectly straight on a long wall is way faster than leveling and shimming multiple cabinets.

@@darinnetherland3466 - Many mass produced / poor quality homes in the US don't have flat floors and straight walls. Additionally, kitchen cabinets were considered a permanent installation that would last the life of the home. Something that is permanent doesn't need adjustable feet. In Europe, it is not uncommon for cabinets to be moved to a new home like all the other furniture. It is a big difference in how US cabinets are made.

Interesting to see the differences in cabinets and electricals between the US and here in the UK, though the fitting process is very similar. Never yet seen a plastic construction sink unit, but makes perfect sense given the number of water damaged sink units I’ve replaced!

Order a stick (maybe 2) of 3-sided solid stock from Kraftmaid, and trim out the bottom (sides & back) of your island with it like baseboard. You'll need to re-cut your quarter round and outside corner, but that will cover your screws. I'd use the solid stock vs a baseboard, to better go with your cabinet style.
@darinnetherland3466
@darinnetherland3466 4 жыл бұрын
Wendi Moskowitz yeah just having the quarter round looks odd anyway. May just make the footprint a little larger, but that’s what you get when you just have to have an island in a small kitchen because all the cool kids have islands.
@thomasarussellsr
@thomasarussellsr 4 жыл бұрын
@@darinnetherland3466 Of course, with the eight foot wall oven cabinet taking away some countertop space, they really do need the island. That kitchen would have hardly any prep space wothout it.

So, the RTA cabinets that the orange competitor sells are all solid birch cabinet grade plywood, full extendable soft close drawer glides, full overlay doors, euro hinges, and nice factory paint. The interiors are heat applied poly finish. The drawer fronts are beech. Oh, and the drawers are dovetail joinery. Each cabinet takes about an hour to assemble. The quality control is outstanding, with pre-drilled holes matching precisely. I have judged the quality between these and the Kraftmaid, and I'd say it pretty darn close. All of this, plus free shipping your door or inside your garage whatever. The receiving time is roughly 3 days. I got my upper cabinets in 2 days. The price is roughly half of what you paid for the Kraftsmaid. The model is Avondale.

When you calculated your cabinet build, did you include the loss that you took on those granite counter tops? Of course white cabinets are in style,and are actually my preference, but this wasn’t a fair trade off. If you were to sell tomorrow, you lost money on the kitchen. Note: I’m a fan of yours and you do good work. This was a cool project. I’m just into house flipping and critiquing.

Nice new kitchen. Looks great. But why would you go with laminate tops? Check out Stone-Coat Countertops. Cheaper than stone, but customizable to what you want and no yearly up-keep. However, if laminate is what you want, go for it. Also, I'd be more than happy with the previous version of your kitchen. I dont know how old mine is, but the house is ~200 years old. We have a manufactured laminate top on one base cabinet supported by angle iron to a hollow corner cabinet. A roll around cart next to the corner frame and wide open under the sink with a plastic shelving unit slid under. There was nothing next to the one base, but I installed an old dishwasher there (to the right) and that brought us 9 inches from the door to the bedroom. The opposing wall has the fridge, an upright freezer, and a 7cuft chest freezer with an open shelf above the chest for out toaster oven and bread box. All Oak uppers, but the microwave/vent hood is only about 13 inches above the stovetop between the corner cabinet frame and the back door. No island. So, I'd be more than happy with your old kitchen.

Great work. I’m about to do my kitchen with kraftmaid from Lowes. Where did you get that trash can electronic opener? Is that a 96” oven cabinet with the 7” drawer? I order that one and was concerned my oven/microwave combo would have a lot of space between the oven and drawer below and also the oven and cabinet doors above but yours doesn’t. I ordered a Cafe combo oven.

Before I do this - any idea if replacing old, attractive, but VERY badly designed cabinets and replacing with modern ones - with much more storage, space, etc; will raise value of home substantially? Sorry, but I have the skills to build my own cabinets, and that center island should prove why building your own is the better option. Building your own also would have allowed you to avoid a filler strip (hated item) alongside the new wall oven providing a true custom look. And just to be fair, you didn't add a dollar figure to your Kraftmaid total for installation, so your all in cost was higher than $6300.
