Thank you for taking the time to explain the dimmer wires. Could not figure what these wires were for on my led panel. Will just cap them off as I will not need them.

Basically you have a nice demonstration here. But for safety sake when you tested to see if the cable was live you had your meter on volts DC which could not test for AC voltage. Just do not want someone to copy you and get a shock thinking there was no power when there actually is.

some of these panels are 270v, check your breaker to make sure its 150v or 227v and make sure your dimmer matches the voltage of your panel and breaker. sometimes these 227v dimmers are hard to find

I just got a 2'x2' dimmable light panel. I want to hang this over my desk for when I need light for working on electronic things. Not wanting to spend the money on one of those 0-10v dimmer controls & the fact that I live in a apartment that has crappy aluminum wiring I just want to stick a cord with a plug on it. I decided to try the dimming function with my old trusty RTMA resistance box. This is what I discovered. Full brightness at 10K ohms & stepping down, down, down to 220 ohms it shuts off. So in actuality one can install a 10K ohm potentiometer with a 220 ohm resistor in series between the + - dim terminals to control the brightness. And BTW what is coming out of the electrical box on the back feeding into the LED panel is 35vdc. The unit I am playing with is a NEOX 5000K 27W panel if your interested in knowing that. I am will not spit out all that code shit at you but to say this, the code states that any single conductor in a circuit shall be capable of handiling the amperage of which said circuit it is connected to. This is safety thing so if things go bad & something short circuits that the conductors will be capable of blowing the fuse or circuit breaker before going up in flames. 15amp circuit 14awg, 20amp circuit 12awg, of course length of said wiring from the fuse/breaker panel also figures into the equation.

So my current dimmer switch was already connected by an electrician to an existing ceiling light (pot light). I'm replacing the pot light with this LED panel light. At the junction I have only the black, white & ground wires (as the dimmer that controls my current LED pot light is on the wall . So, how do I connect that to make it dim? Can I just connect the purple to the black and the white to the grey wire directly? OR do I connect the fixture's purple & black together & connect that to my one black wire, and the fixtures white & grey together & connect that to my one white wire?

If we want to run it with dimmer option, do we still need the wiring explained in the first half of the video, which was without dimmer? In other words, doesn’t the wiring of the dimmer also power the LED ? If the answer is no, seems like we should have two sets of wiring for it from the wall.
@bretassmus75022 жыл бұрын
I agree how the video is a bit confusing. If the power supply starts at the switch and only white/black wires are feeding all the light panels.....then why not just jump the violet and gray wires to the white/black terminals at the led panels and wire the dimmer switch as illustrated via the switch location where the hot input begins??
@WCGroen1 Жыл бұрын
I found that confusing to. It looks like you need a separate feed to the light in the ceiling.

I think you have your meter on a DC setting, you should remind your audience to make sure to set your meter on the correct AC voltage setting, because a DC setting won't give you a AC voltage reading. (ZAP) Otherwise a good informative video.

I understand you want to show people to be safe but if you're trying to advice people to check for voltages with a multimeter, show it in the appropriate setting. When you were checking for AC power, you had the meter set to read DC.

I have a real curiosity question, with no liabilities to whoever answers this. I'm assuming since this is running 110 volts into the lights, that the box is basically a transformer, that is dropping the voltage. So my question is if it's dropping the voltage down to around that 10 Volt range that the dimmer switch is rated for, is there a way to run this panel off of a battery? Such as a car battery?
@vincentweisenberg26835 жыл бұрын
No. The 0 to 10v is for dimming. The light still needs 120 volts to operate.
@dlalfrey19555 жыл бұрын
To add to what Vincent said, a 12V car battery is DC voltage. These panels are AC voltage. They would work off a car battery if you have an inverter to operate AC items.
@johnnysalinas70825 жыл бұрын
usually the internal LEDs have some kind of resistance which will let the LED turn on at certain voltage like 45-65V, (some not common voltage) even if you remove the driver and try to plug a 12V DC battery directly to the panel lights, this LEDs might not work. Thats why manufactures put their on drivers in there with the right amount of voltage to turn this panels on.
@illumadynesmtproduction94724 жыл бұрын
So, the LED's run on DC voltage, the box on the back of the light is called a driver. this driver supplies a DC voltage to the LED bar inside of the fixture. Depending on the circuit design of the LED bar, the voltage can be anywhere fro 22V to 50V. the 0-10V dimmer wire setup is for the IC in the driver. most Drivers are constant voltage variable current and will supply anywhere from the lowest wattage driver I have seen is an 8W driver to the largest of a 325W driver in a street light. all operating ouput voltages falling in the 22-50V range. so, to answer your question, no, a single car battery will not run this light the way you want. Depending on the circuit design, you can use 2,3,4 12V batteries to run the light if you wire directly to the led bar and remove the driver. Bear in mind that you will need a current limiting device in line if you do decide to do this, as without one, you will have a non limited circuit which will get VERY hot and give you a very bright light for a very short time. then POOf no more light.
