How to Install Magic Lantern on a Canon 6D

Great overview for the 6D. Thanks for posting! As for recording RAW with ML. The 6D isn't the best camera. It doesn't matter how fast your SD card is because the 6D (internally) only records at 40 mb/s. Even if you had a SD card that recorded at 10000 mb/s, you're still maxed out at 40 because of the camera's internal recording speed. The RAW feature with ML will only record about 4-5 seconds before frame skip on the 6D. If you're filming something that is full of tiny short clips, the RAW would be great and it would get you the best quality film. However, that is not ideal, so I recommend you use ML for all of its other features and utilize the camera's factory set recording features. I go with the "Prolost Flat" picture style, then just edit/enhance color in post production. Thanks again for the vid. I got a lot out of it! :)

You'll have to repeat the process on all cards. If you have 1.1.3. it honestly should only take probably 2 mins per install to put the files on the SD and run the firmware change.

Hi, Thanks for the video. I would ask if you know a way to listen to the audio you're recording with an external mic into your headphones. Because on the cam I only have the jack for ext mic but not the headphones one. Thanks in advance

If your camera doesn’t have a headphone jack you’ll need to run your audio through a different device if you want to monitor it. Or some things like the picomic let you send a signal into a camera input and also have a Jack for headphone monitoring too

Yes, you'll need ML to be on every card that you use. Although, if you're using a DSLR with two camera slots like the Canon 5Dmkiii you can just keep ML on the SD card and record your footage to the CF. Works like a charm with that camera. With the 6D you'll have to keep ML on the cards, which isn't that bad. Probably takes only 2 mins to set up each card. Good luck!

Your video is awesome! Tell please, which resolution you used for your films? I have Canon 6D but ML estimation algorithm allows me maximum 1600 on 900 for 5 seconds. I need to go much lower to have a bit more. From what I learned 6D can't write more than 40mbps. So which card you used? Thanks!

Nice job dude. Which version you use magic lantern ? (i have also 6D) I installed the latest version for 1.1.6 firmware my raw videos are yellow, it's even worse in low light you think this is normal even though my white balance is right? in addition to this problem , my magic lantern plant displays a blue screen ... igmanvideos Hmm, not exactly clear on what you're saying but I'll try and help first by saying that a Canon 6D probably isn't the best camera for live broadcasts. You'd have to buy a device that converts the video stream to a web friendly size. Some thing like a live stream broadcaster might be your best option. I have done some live stream projects for clients and myself before and it's always more complicated than anticipated! Good luck!

Awesome! I'm a bit new to Magic Lantern, and my main use would be to try to get 50-60fps shooting for video in 1080p? Is that FPS override? Could you explain how that's possible? There's one guy on KZbin (Melvin Jose) who makes videos on a 6D RAW in 50fps slo-mo and then uses Twixtor for extra slo-mo. He says he shoots at "1824 x 466 upscaled to 1920 x 816", but how do you upscale resolution?? Is there like a Magic Lantern manual or something where it shows how to do all of the features? it's all so confusing

Hello Kraig . . I have followed all of the steps up to the point of selecting the (current) firmware version 1.1.4 and pressing OK to upgrade.the body, etc. . . . following the steps, i see the screen flash quickly that the upgrade (actually downgrade) is happening but the camera goes completely black with only the red led by the SD card door flashing on and on. After 15 mites I figured something was wrong . . .On/Off switch didn't work so had to remove the battery to turn the camera off. The whole process was done with camera in :M: mode . . What do you think is the issue?

First off yes, you're going to need a faster SD card if you want to be able to shoot a RAW clip that doesn't stop on you. I use a 95mb/s card and that works well. Also what resolution are you trying? The higher the resolution the more taxing it will be on the camera processor.

Magic Lantern is going to take as much processor speed as possible to make recording RAW happen so try turning off any unnecessary features like overlays. Experiment with different video recording resolutions and then push is it higher if it is working.

Is ML for 6D safe? I have used ML on my t2i for years and I love it. I bought a 6D few months back and have been sceptical of installing ML because the site says its a "nightly build" and I don't really know what the means. I really miss the zebras and focus assist of ML though.

A nightly build is just the latest compile coming straight out of the source code that night. This means it hasn't been tested, but if you're really worried, there are always at least a couple people out there who have already installed it.

Not sure, you just have to use a good clapboard and sync in post. This is only with RAW. With normal H.264 recording you can totally record audio fine.

Nope, you can always erase ML and revert back to the Canon firmware because it doesn't go anywhere. ML is supplementary and only on the SD card.
