Awesome tutorial! I just finished installing OpenStep in VirtualBox and your directions are perfect! So fun to play with OpenStep. I worked at the SDSU computer store back in 1993 and we had a NeXT computer on display. No one bought it...it was $10K, but the operating system and PostScript Display was amazing compared to the PCs and Macs at the time. Thanks for the video and now I can mess around with OpenStep.

Same at SFSU. We had a NeXT lab with so many pizza boxes, black and white, color, and a cube with a monster black CRT. After I graduated I heard they recycled all of them :( missed out on freebie NeXT hardware!

I have gotten over that video of your just now and I've got to say, seeing these non flat icons on that non flat GUI is pretty stylish to see again. Granted, this OS comes from one of the masterminds behind OSX - yes - but it doesn't change facts that it looks really good, even in black and white.

This system remains alive in MacOS (in part and internals backends of the software). Maybe not a bad product, only very expensive workstations for those years.

This is amazing, thank you so much! I was able to follow these directions and get it up and running in color and it's so cool. I had a Nextstation color turbo and it was a pretty nifty machine. This definitely brought back some memories! Iv'e installed the Developer Tools and just had to write Hello World and play around with Interface Builder again. A few questions: My mouse is extremely jumpy in V.B., almost to the point of being unusable. Have you experienced that? Also I'm using this on a Mac and I can't figure out what key to use for "Cmd". For instance to switch the views on File Viewer, using B, I, and L, I can't access these with the keyboard using any of the qualifier keys. Can you get this to work? You can also log in as root to avoid the permission issues: - Double click the date icon from the Dock to open System Preferences. - Select the lock icon and press "Create" to set a password to the default user. - After you done that, go back to the File Viewer and click on "Log Out". - Now you can log in as root (the password is a blank space). To log in again to the default user, type "me" as the user name and type the password you set before in System Preferences.

For those that were not able to download the archive provided here, I just did it on a Linux system and while it does download and decrypt and work, it did bog down my firefox so much after it finished downloading I had to restart my browser. It is more of the MEGA download site than the file itself. I think in windows you WILL have issues downloading this as MEGA like any other site like it will have ads and bog the system down. Now on topic with the video, Michael, what OS are you running virtualbox on? And what version of VB is it? Also, what are the other settings you set or left default, for this OS to work? I noticed a few things about the motherboard chipset types and amd-v or some such? PIIIX or P4X or some such? I know I have had issues installing qnx or linux if the chipset type is not right, if the system does not conform to a period correct setup to install older unix OS it does tend to fail due to the chipsets for the drives and VGA,DMA controllers, etc not being detected or able to load and activate. I have NeXTSTEP 3.2,3.3 and OpenSTEP 4.2 user and server but yeah, never thought to try on VB. Also,if you used ATI Mach64 based cards and Soundblaster 16 audio, you can make this work in real life hardware with a pentium or P2/3 system. I will try the real deal once I can write the floppies lol!

Found this after over 2yrs , tried out .. install runs well for the first part but then I struggle ... In the section where you install graphics driver - my mouse is behaving erratic ... the mouse pointer is jumping wildly around - if I manage at all to access the video driver button, I cant go down to the scrollbar in the videodriver selection - any way to control that without mouse? If it was windows I know how to access the controls / navigate between them - but here .. Next/Openstep seems to avoid any "known" key-combo or key-shortcut (tab-key) ??

I want to try this, but I'm in the process of doing some house cleaning, deciding on my next OS, and trying to use virtual box(which I barely touched upon many many years ago). The comments look encouraging, but my point for commenting is...am I the only one who notices the links do not work for virtualbox as well as no discussions on the forum link? Not that I can't find virtual box...but dead links detract a little. Thanks, looking forward to trying this.

You got a bit paranoid with you not showing your network settings. Nobody is going to be able to do anything evil with your internal IP address (which is most likely 192.168.1.x or 192.168.0.x) anyway or the random MAC address of the VM's NIC.
